Then he was in a serious car wreck similar to Chad Jones'. The Giants were extremely lucky that they were able to snag Bart Oates from the USFL to take his place.
He made the Pro Bowl in 1968...was a nominee was for several seasons.
Despite suffering a severe knee injury in 1964 that led doctors to believe he would never play again, he returned to the Giants lineup in late 1965 with his rebuilt knee after extensive home rehabilitation program.
San Diego pursued him after the brief NFL AFL war started over the Giants signing of Pete Gogokak.
And he was accused of instigating a wild fight by throwing a elbow on the sidelines during a play where a Saints player went out of bounds that ended with the Homer Jones helmet swinging incident.
He was the last of the Eastern Championship era Giants when he retired after the 1973 season...Morrison retired after the 1972 season.
Was the Giants second round selection out of Penn State in 1968. the Giants started the 1968 season 4-0 behind the blocking of new acquisition Steve Wright at RT, however Wright suffered a knee injury which gave Buzin among others an opportunity...the Giants were worried about the free spirit Wright hanging around Buzin. In 1969 when Wright's comeback stalled and Wright was suspended by the Giants, Buzin became the RT.
After the 1970 season he was traded to the Rams for another RT Joe Taffoni, Taffoni refused to report to the Giants but the trade still went through.

That was back in '67 or '68. It was the first Giants game I ever attended. ;>)
And let's not forget Doug Riesenberg, got here just in time to see the fall from XXI, and rebound to XXV. He turned into pretty good value for a 6th round pick. I think he's a math teacher and HS coach now.
Ernie Hughes was the starting center and was injured and Clack had to be brought out voluntary retirement. He (Clack) had failed a Giants physical in July after having had knee surgery. Clack had to pass through injured waivers in order for the Giants to activate him.
Hughes knee injury ending his season was potentially a huge problem because Ed McGlasson was only other center on the roster.
I have soft spot for him ... My parents were on the Johnny Carson afternoon quiz show Do You Trust Your Wife and Jack and his wife were the next contestants ... I got a program signed <really signed> by every player later ... He must have been impressed with my Dad's Al Bundy moment of intercepting a Sid Luckman pass for a TD in High School ...
Mention of his name brings back a lot of memories ...
I didn't remember that, but I do remember that he retired after the 1980 season, and then came back midway through the 81 season. I guess if he'd come back for the full year, there'd be a different jersey we all revere.
if not for that freak eye injury he would have been close to a per runes All Pro. Still bothers me after all these years, strange that Ihavent let that one go
Headhunter - Williams was 30 when he hurt his eye. He sat behind Bart Oates for years. Before the injury, I think you have to say that he was a bad 1st round pick.
Joe Taffoni, Bill Austin, and Bob Hyland. Bob Hyland I remember it well. My first year in Wisconsin / 1971. Alex Webster head coach trades a 1st round choice to the Bears for Bob Hyland and CB Benny McRae just before the start of the season.
First game was against the inept Packers in Green Bay coached by Dan Devine rah rah college coach. Giants recover two fumbles in the end zone on kickoffs for touchdowns. Scott Hunter Green Bay QB rallies Packers but lose 42-40 to the Jints.
Bob Hyland wipes out Dan Devine on sideline play and breaks Devine's leg. Great sight to see Devine on Crutches during the season. He tried to motivate Green Bay players playing highlights from University Missouri games. Not!

...<sniff>
Who was the offensive tackle who seemed to be a reach and then hurt his back the 1st day of practice. Scary, that must be about 12 years ago already.

I was a fan prior to those days, but as an early teenager and a child... let's face it... offensive lineman weren't exactly a priority.
