The league respectfully honored my request not to officiate Washington,” Carey told the Washington Post. “It happened sometime after I refereed their playoff game in 2006, I think.
If an MLB ump from Alabama, lets say refuses to work Yankee games ?
Why would a name that celebrates our armies during a few world wars cause an umpire to not ump it? Help me out here, not seeing the correlation
Just because it fits as to how ridiculous these types of threads have become...the NY Yankees didn't get their name from celebrating our armies in WWI and WWII.
Yeah - the people who've watched the NFL their whole lives, and then began being offended by the Redskins name about 6 months ago because of an orchestrated PR campaign.
What if Jeff Triplette refused to work Redskins games ? Â
I'm not sure Ron understands the fact one name is racist and the other isnt.
Thank goodness I have people on BBI to tell me whats offensive and what isn't
Ron it is so clear that even anti-PC folks are on board. Your inability to see it is shameful. Though I'm sure you won't feel any.

Well, not for nothing but about 6 months ago, the "offensive" name that has been around for 80 years was not so self-evidently "shameful." Only after the weak-minded snapped to attention when told did it become so in certain quarters.

I know you're not a big fan of facts, but there have been protests over the name since the 1980's.

You're small minded for thinking that.
So small minded I had to post it twice, I guess. Â
and I can't understand how those who defend the name refuse to acknowledge the context of the franchise's history of abject, manifest racism.
Then add in the imagery the team has used in its logos and mascots over the years, the original lyrics of "Hail to the Redskins," etc., and there is just no denying that the name is a racial slur and nothing else. (Oh, and how about the middle-aged high school band rejects marching around the field--out of step--in ridiculous cigar store Indian headdress? That's a celebration of the indigenous culture, right?) There is no rational argument on the other side.
As a resident of the area, I find it embarrassing that the team that purports to represent my community (and the nation's capital, no less) has a racial slur for a name and I have felt this way for a long time.
But, this issue is not about being PC. It is about a derogatory term being used as a team name. This official went to his boss and asked not to be put in a situation that makes him feel uncomfortable. There is nothing wrong with that. Perhaps if more did this, the league would apply some pressure to change the name.
Well, he hasn't asked off Eagles games...

Very True
