NFT: Route 95 in Connecticut

steve_in_philly : 8/20/2014 3:12 pm
I am planning to drive from Philly to Cape Cod next week. I usually leave after work and miss all the traffic through CT making 95 a pleasant journey.

However, I made the trip at the end of June and they were doing night time traffic on 95 closing all but one lane. Not just in one section but along the entire length in CT and into RI. What a horrible trip!

Does anyone know if the night time construction on 95 is still going on?

Thanks!
Its called

.
I live in CT just off of 95

I'm pretty sure the entire length of 95 in CT was not reduced to one lane. I generally have stayed east of New Haven and haven't seen any lane closures.

And lastly, you bastard Cape Codders piss me off on Saturday Mornings and Sunday Evenings.
Thanks CT DOT good call

closures went on and off in 20 mile breaks starting in Stamford... then Norwalk.. New Haven.. Lyme.. New London..

Seemed like a 95 project because it continued into RI and MA... took 9 hours to make the trip.

Was just cones up so could have been a short term project...

Thanks Again!
I just made the same trip this past week

Take the Hutch to the Merritt, then get on 95 around exit 38 (I think). You'll get crushed in traffic around Cape Cod unless you go on an "off" time.

Do yourself a favor and stop in New Haven (2 miles off I-95) and grab Pepe's pizza for a pit stop.
I go to NJ to the Cape

every summer for vacation and I think only once have I had a decent trip. This year, I took 684-84-90-495 on the way back (only reversed) and hit hardly any traffic. It adds about 26 miles to the trip, but it is so much more pleasant to move the whole time.
LOLZ

Your alternate option
aimrocky : 8/20/2014 3:50 pm : link
isn't much better... They're working on the Merritt from Greenwich to Stamford on both sides. Last week I left a softball game in Trumbull at 7:45, and didn't get back to Greenwich until almost 9:30. That's typically a 45 minute ride.
AR is right

there is work going on with the Merrit, and it is a mess with dividers, cones, etc.

I would give the 684-84-90-495-25-6 route a try.

people who live there and are able to endure that hell every day. I do it once a year when we drive from Virginia to New Hampshire in the summer and every year it's a nighmare and I swear I'll never do it again. My head would explode if I had to deal with that day after day!
Muahahaha

One does simply not get to avoid traffic on I-95, that highway along with I-84 are complete nightmares and totally unpredictable.

To make matters worse, there really isn't any better alternate route for you. I used to have to work all over the State, and it's common to sit in an hour or more of traffic. He'll I just went to RI a few weeks ago from Albany, the only traffic I hit the entire time was in Waterbury on 84 ( an hour to get through Waterbury), and all of 95 on my way back to Rt.9 ( another hour or more of traffic) and that was leaving in the afternoon.

All I can say is good luck, and just prepare for hitting traffic in your travel through hell, I mean CT. If you get through it no problem than count it as bonus.

in the last year I've discovered a great route to work using only back roads. It's a beautiful ride, and takes a little less than an hour (will be even shorter once I get into our new house mid-September). The only downside is during deer mating season, it's not uncommon to have one dart out in front of your car right after dusk.
It would be fine if it weren't for douchebags from philly trying to

Depends on which direction you're going thru my state...
If you take I-84 East thru CT...
Vinny from Danbury : 8/20/2014 4:34 pm : link
Just make sure you don't hit the Danbury area until after 6:30-7pm at least. Especially on a Thur or Fri. Earlier in the week it's a bit better. And weekends aren't too much of an issue. But anytime during the Rush these days 84 basically becomes a parking lot from just after Exit 8 as you leave Danbury until just before you get into Southbury, where the State Troopers barracks are. I make that trip frequently at the wrong time of day because I have no other choice, and it turns what used to be an easy 10 minute drive into 30-45 minutes of being stuck in slow moving traffic now.

The highways in this little state just can't handle the number of cars on them anymore.
Drove up it
Mr. Nickels : 8/20/2014 4:45 pm : link
last Friday. Hell on Earth. Avoided all traffic in Jersey and the City too only to get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in freaking CT. This was around Stamford area.
Don't go anywhere near 95
pjcas18 : 8/20/2014 4:55 pm : link
go 684 to 84, sure there is a chance for backup or accident on 684 or 84, and they're just 2 lanes for a lot of them, but I cannot almost say with certainty you will get there faster than 95 to 91 to 84.
Nothing is worse than the Q Bridge.......
Vin R : 8/20/2014 4:56 pm : link
NOTHING
I don't think there's a time of the day where
aimrocky : 8/20/2014 5:00 pm : link
the Q Bridge DOESN'T have traffic. Maybe at 4 am on a Sunday?

This past Sunday at 11 am we took 95 to Stamford, then Norwalk and hit traffic. Then, on the way home, I took the Merritt thinking I should stay away from 95. I hit traffic in Stamford. You can't win.

There's also a Pepe's in Fairfield and it's just two blocks off of I-95.
yeah if your gonna stop in new haven

get real apizza, Sally's, Bar or Modern. Non of that chain food pizza Pepe's.

Or if you decide to go the 84- 684 route you can stop at exit 5 (I believe)off 684 and go to Ted's. Get yourself on of the best burgers you'll ever have.

Waze on your phone and let it guide you around the mess.
Used it a few weeks ago coming back from Mass and it's great.

I second Modern. Sally's has good pies, but nasty, rude staff.
Timing is everything

Left Annapolis at 350 am on a Sunday and was in Northern Truro on the Cape at 1pm. Including an screwing around at Liberty State Park and Carlos Bakery in Hoboken 500 miles. No traffic to speak of at all. 95 the whole way.

Leave when the rest of the fucking Cape Cordero leave and you can sit in traffic with them.
