NFT: Slingbox Question

Enrico Pallazzo : 8/20/2014 4:11 pm
Does anyone have experience "slinging" a Giants game broadcast from a Slingbox to a Kindle Fire HD/HDX or a Roku box? If so, what is the streaming quality like if you have a decent high-speed wireless signals in both locations?

I like the sling box to the Roku

I think it works well. Internet speed is important of course.

it looks great. as someone else noted it depends on your internet speed. keep in mind also that if you use roku, you'll have to go through an android device or iOS device. I have an ipod that I got on ebay that I used just for that purpose to sling to a projector that I have with a roku stick on it.
I was thinking about getting one.

I'd like to watch our home channels on the TV on our boat. Can I do that? What device do I need on the boat to project to the TV? Or can. Only watch on a computer or ipad?

Do you have an internet connection on your boat? If not it isn't going to work. If you have an iPad with a 3G connection then you are going to chew through your data and the quality will probably suck. I have never done so with 4G.

Yes, this is all assuming I have internet either by using my ipad as a hot spot or when we are spending evenings on the boat in a slip out of town and using the wifi provided by marina we stay. Mostly I would use it when we have wifi for the reasons you stated.

My question is how do I get it to the TV? Do I need a ROKU box?
Thanks mnm99ny and 26.2

Appreciate the input.

Rick, yes, I believe you'll need a Roku box or Apple TV (basically any device that connects to your TV and has the Sling app in its store).

I use the Slingbox on the boat all the time
jcn56 : 8/21/2014 12:55 am : link
using a tablet and my cell phone as a hotspot. As long as I'm not more than 4-5 miles from shore, I'm fine.

The only suggestion I'd make is to try to avoid a wireless connection to the Slingbox, in particular if it's a newer, HD capable one. If you don't have a hardwired connection, consider a powerline ethernet adapter instead to improve latency.

If you use your phone or ipad you will need to download the app which is expensive for an all. I use my laptop and just have an hdmi cable go from my laptop to my tv. You don't need to purchase the app if you have a laptop. Also, if you have an iPad then you will need to get the adapter so you can connect an hdmi cable to it which is more money. I've don't both. I like my computer better. I have had problems with the slingbox slinging wirelessly to the iPad. With the same WiFi I never had a problem with my computer. Both are wireless connections. I don't know why one is better than the other. I have a MacBook pro.

I do like the interface on the app better than my computer though. It is a lot easier to use imo. Still, I prefer using my laptop.
Thanks Robbie.

I appreciate the information. I'll probably go with the laptop and HDMI cable then. I appreciate the information.

What method to connect to the TV on your boat are you using?

Can you provide some specifics about your laptop to TV HDMI connection? Does your laptop have an HDMI port? I think I want to go the laptop (connected wirelessly to WiFi) plugged into the TV route, but not sure what cord to buy. The back of my laptop has USB ports and the standard VGA (I think that's what it's called) output, which sends visuals to an LCD projector, etc. If you have a link to what you bought, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again...

Regular ole cell phone gets me internet coverage, and then I use a tablet to view the Slingbox back on shore. I've got a Clarion CMD6 with a bluetooth attachment that hooks up to the tablet to link in the stereo system.

If you wanted to watch on a regular TV, you'd need a tablet that could export HDMI and hook that up to a television.

I've also got a small rechargeable HDTV that works over the air with an antenna, for those days that we go further offshore and beyond cell phone coverage. Don't have 110V service on the boat (I've got a small inverter but no generator, nothing I want to run continuously).
Many cable systems allow you to watch
Section331 : 8/21/2014 10:21 am : link
any channels you are licensed to see through their app. You do need wifi though. I do it all the time on the road, watch SNY or MSG on my iPad.

I have a MacBook and use a mini display port to HDMI cable (see link). does both sound and video...that cable you use for the projector should work for the TV as well as long as the TV has the same connector. I don't know if you'd need another set up for sound (though there are a million options for sound if you don't want to use the lap top speakers).

I'll echo what someone else said - when I hook up my laptop to my projector instead of using the roku stick via iOS app (btw the phone/ipad/android app for sling box is $15) the laptop picture is better.

My computer has an HDMI port. I have a MacBook Pro that I got for Christmas so it isn't old. I'm sure if you just go to the apple website you will see it.

As far as an iPad goes I went to the apple store and got the correct adapter that will allow an hdmi hookup along with another port to charge your iPad at the same time.

also, slingboxes need to be hard wired (via Ethernet).

another thing is that only one slingbox model has an HDMI connection. they need to be hooked up via component/composite cables which I think is ridiculous, but I think it has something to do with the way the cable boxes work.

Thanks. I'm trying to get the picture onto the TV. My wife and I do a lot of long weekends, vacations and overnighting.... so having access to all the channels at home would be nice., especially the Giant games. If I can get the games on the TV on the boat I just assume watch games on the boat even in the winter.
