According to Baseball Savant, Duda saw 450 pitches while ahead in the count last season, offering at 168 of them. If you like percentages, he swung at 37% of the pitches he saw while ahead. He’s seen 421 of the same pitches this year, and offered at 181 (43%) of them. And his aggressiveness has been rewarded. His ISO, while ahead in the count this season, stands at .507 (!), a remarkable improvement over his .271 mark in 2013.
I’m reminded of Dave Cameron’s post on hidden hackers. Duda is by no means a hacker, nor is he a hidden one. His new-ish aggressiveness, though, is noticeable, and has been a boon for his productivity.
One more thing before we get back to our comparison, Duda’s in good company regarding his power. He ranks 18th in pull ISO, while ranking 16th going the other way. The only other player that ranks top 20 in both is Paul Goldschmidt.
Murphy but I really hope they shop him in the off-season. If Herrera is as good as scouts think then spending 10-12 for 4-5 years for Murphy vs. taking back a nice return for Murphy, maybe "accepting" some mediocre veteran for 60-70 games until Herrera comes up makes the most sense.
I've purposely tried to avoid the Wilmer topic since people are obsessed but I really think they should consider calling up Reynolds (40 man stuff aside) and letting him play SS the rest of the way. Let Wilmer mix in a bit at 3b, 2b, SS and platoon with Duda. I'm not real impressed with Wilmer's bat speed to be perfectly honest with you. I think he's in AAA or traded by opening day.
if Wilmer doesn't hit he doesn't deserve to play. 2015 shouldn't be another "let's suck" year. I'd deal Murphy and deal with a Kelly Johnson type for half a year if need be. I love young players as much (or more) than the next guy but .221/.255/.294 in 72 big league games shouldn't equate with starting 2b, maybe competing with a Kelly Johnson type in ST? But starting 2b? Not when the 2015 Mets MUST be a legit over .500 team. MUST.
all on Flores. He's getting his chance and he has to hit. Ive seen a lot of hard hit balls lately though but he needs to settle down a bit. Seems like he's being to aggressive early in the count. Likely trying to prove himself.
Flores's defense has been a very pleasant surprise his ticket to the bigs is his bat and there is no sense penciling him anywhere if he's not hitting but how long has he been the starter? 13 games? I do hope Flores is given a bit more time but Reynolds is equally intriguing to me.
about Duda is we all were on his band wagon a few years ago(who could forget my infamous 40 homerun potential quip... lol) but we were all equally frustrated by his lack of aggressiveness leading up to this year. We all knew the big lug had it in him but how many fucking times could he take a fastball right down the plate in a hitters count?
The biggest Duda supporters here were calling him "meh" or "nothing special" up until a couple months ago. I was team Ike because of what he showed but I couldn't be happier the light bulb finally went on for Duda.
Aren't we past wins and losses yet? It might even be nice to have a protected pick again, no? I'd shut down Wright, Mejia, Familia, Wheeler, and deGrom. Let Montero get some more starts, maybe call up a Mazzoni or a Verrett. Call up Reynolds and Muno. Its about that time. Start gearing up for 2015.
Z - wins and losses don't matter in the big picture, but just the same I'd rather not see them blow a 5-0 lead if possible.
Of course and Im being a bit fecetious but its not like we should be stressing for wins anymore. Even as bad as things are I think we've still been hanging with most teams(aside from the Nats) generally getting splits or playing right with teams. Familia, Mejia, ect are all pitching a lot more than they are used to. Shut em down.
No issues with shutting down the guys you mentioned Â
I like your dedication to Wilmer, I mean it, you don't hop on and off the bandwagon
Hey, I wanted him to get a chance. With Tejada, it made zero chance not to but I finally got my wish. Im happy. There are no guarantees. If Flores isn't a major leaguer I won't be upset, but if we never found out at the expense of fucking Ruben Tejada I would have been pissed about it forever. Still too early though. The kid is still very young. We all just watched how TDA struggled at first and he was twice the prospect Flores was. Im not ready to throw in the towel on him yet after a couple weeks.
The young position player on the team that I like the most Â
I agree he is the perfect fit for that role. And while I am sure he would to be a starter he even content enough to accept that as his role and prepares for it better than most.
should be Murphy, Gee, and Neise and I think the Mets fan base is seriously underestimating what we can get in return for them. Gee and Neise are still good pitchers and will certainly have value on the trade market. Murphy is an all-star and the likely NL hits leader. With hitting at premium he will net a nice package when he is finally on the market for good and I don't think we are going to miss a beat with Herrera.
unless you have someone actually pushing him out of the spot. Trading arguably the teams best hitter and creating a hole wit the hopes of a prospect being able to equally fill it is not the smartest move with a team with so many offensive problems.
with all due respect, you do not have a competition for a spot in Spring Training
in baseball for a a job. Duda & Ike were 2 veterans they had to make a decision on, but a rookie going against a vet for the job based on Spring Training?

I agree I worded it poorly, I should have simply worded it as prove he can do it at this level between the call ups and next spring.
you don't win or lose a job in September call up or in Spring Training. You are facing expanded rosters
But if you are thinking of trading away you best hitter you had better let the kid to some extent at least show what he does at the major league level. Trading Murphy without even doing so in my opinion is not wise. It isn't like this team has a surplus of offense that they can easily trade away hitting allow a prospect plenty of time to adjust without it hurting the team. Some teams can do that this team shouldn't.
to do with just replacing Herrera for Murphy. That's only one part. There are three parts. First... you are replacing him with arguably one of the best 2nd best prospects in baseball at this point who in the least is an upgrade defensively right now and has been hitting out of his mind all year. Two... you are saving the 10-15 million annually it will take to retain Murphy which could be used on another player. Three.... The trade of Murphy likely brings you back a solid player, maybe even a good bat for a position of need. So you are not replacing Murphy with one player. You are replacing him with three.
brought us back Syndergaard, TDA, and Buecerra. 1 month of Marlon Byrd brought us back Vic Black and Dilson Herrera. Murphy is a reigning all-star and possibly hits leader. Seems like the absolute perfect time to sell high and I love the guy.
Well I'll ask you this. With the current state of this organization and this current Mets team and where they are at this point in time with their hopes of Harvey coming back to form next season and looking to make next season one to where they finally may actually challenge for the division imagine just how bad it would be if they traded Murph and it ends up that Herrera proves that he really isn't ready to make the jump?
Just my opinion but this team doesn't need to create an offensive hole for next season without the replacement first showing what he can do at the major league level. At some point trading away talent for picks or prospect can't be a teams main strategy. Murphy shouldn't be traded until they are as certain as they can be he will be properly be replaced in the line-up.
RE: I mean... one year of 40 year old R.A. Dickey Â

This team is at an entirely different point in their rebuilding process then when they made those trades, and those guys were much older than Murph who is entering his prime.
no question. He might lead the NL in hits this season. But I get apprehensive every time the ball is hit to Murphy, like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you get. He has improved by leaps and bounds as a 2nd baseman, but................

I don't disagree and am not entirely opposed to his being traded at some point. I just think that you let a prospect push him rather than simply make a trade to hand him a spot with high hopes. Plenty of young players have come up and pushed starters which then displayed to the team that they were viable options for the team to then make a trade creating a spot for them. Why force it?
would probably be the best thing to do. Unless they are not competitive next year and trade him at the deadline. What I really fear happening, is next year the Mets are in the mix and then at the end of the year they do not pay Murphy and he leaves for nothing.
However the Mets want to be competitive next year and trading him away with no established replacement might send the wrong message. Herrera is hopefully the answer but possible a full year or more away. Only other option is if Flores hits well down the stretch, he could fill the void.

A) first and foremost we could use a 1b with his power
B) he seems like a quiet humble guy who is well liked in the clubhouse
Herrera 2-4
It's like Groundhog Day

Boy, that was bad.

LOL, yeah with both he and Duda by trying to force them to play in the OF they almost lost them as producers for the team.
