Well I'll ask you this. With the current state of this organization and this current Mets team and where they are at this point in time with their hopes of Harvey coming back to form next season and looking to make next season one to where they finally may actually challenge for the division imagine just how bad it would be if they traded Murph and it ends up that Herrera proves that he really isn't ready to make the jump?
Just my opinion but this team doesn't need to create an offensive hole for next season without the replacement first showing what he can do at the major league level. At some point trading away talent for picks or prospect can't be a teams main strategy. Murphy shouldn't be traded until they are as certain as they can be he will be properly be replaced in the line-up.
Just an example but say we traded Murphy to the Dodgers for Joc Peterson. We use the 10-15 million we would have given Murphy on Lowrie. You would take a Murphy who might walk in free agency in a year anyway over Pederson, Lowrie, and Herrera?? I wouldn't.
brought us back Syndergaard, TDA, and Buecerra. 1 month of Marlon Byrd brought us back Vic Black and Dilson Herrera. Murphy is a reigning all-star and possibly hits leader. Seems like the absolute perfect time to sell high and I love the guy.
This team is at an entirely different point in their rebuilding process then when they made those trades, and those guys were much older than Murph who is entering his prime.
I dont understand this point. Sandy already said he is looking for prospects close to major league ready or young players already on a team so the thinking has already changed. Only difference between those trades and one now is that Sandy is no longer looking at players far out in a trade.

left in the 5th. I'll let the team's mid-game tweet tell the story:

Not a good night for the Cyclones. Franchise record six errors have led to another franchise record 11 unearned runs. BKLYN trails 14-3.
The errors just kept happening. Rosario dropped a towering pop-up that he was under for a solid half-second. The catcher (#2) literally cant catch. Terrible. And he fought with the pitcher before the game even started. A total embarrassment. Conforto looks solid though -- looked like a pro in a semi-pro league.
and NO ONE CLAIMED HIM! What makes you think any team would give anything up for him when they wouldn't take him for free? And Gee is a 4 or 5 starter. I'm not saying neither has value, but Niese is overpaid and Gee is arbitration eligible. The Mets are not getting much back in return.
Murphy, yes, could bring a decent return, but I don't buy that Niese and/or Gee will net much.
is this guy for real? Doing very well in the PCL and FIP loves him. His K/BB is an incredible 5.20 in AAA. He limits walks and homers and his K/9 is very good (just not Thor good). It's only 5 starts but he's quickly leveled from SSA Brooklyn to AAA in 2 years.
But if Niese was in high demand, a team would put in a claim to see if there was anything they could work out. I'm not saying he has no value, but his value, and Gee's, are vastly overstated here.

Right. I agree with this and its taken me some time to realiize that. Niese and Gee are both legit MLB starters, and thus have value, but with the decline in offense around MLB I don't think we should expect much of a return for either in a trade.
Hopefully they both pitch lights out the rest of the way because I think my heart still believes in Niese more than my head does.
which players that a claim was put in on and then withdrawn. Often teams put in a claim to block a rival they know is interested. They don't publicize those moves as SOP. Occasionally something leaks, but unless you work for MLB in NYC, the claims and withdrawals are known by very few
saying someone was put on waivers and no one claimed
Many teams put their entire team through waivers. this is revocable waivers, and teams do it to gauge interest or other reasons.
irrevocable waivers is only done in extreme cases, normally when you want to outright a player to the minors or you want to unload his salary. Manny ramirez was famously put on irrevocable waivers a during his Red Sox tenure, but he was owed over 100M dollars.
So when the media and some fans went gaga over the fact all anyone needed to do was claim Manny, yeah, and pay him over 100M dollars for the next 5 years.
Niese was on revocable waivers, meaning if he were claimed there is ZERO chance the Mets simply let him go, they'd pull him back and try and work out a trade. The fact he wasn't claimed is no more telling than the fact Mike Trout wasn't claimed.
almost certainly wouldn't make it through waivers since he's only owed the remainder of 2014 (whatever is left of 3.6 million) and can be retained next year for 5 or so. Niese as has been noted can be dealt to any team, Colon is the interesting one... the Mets perceived cheapness might scare off a blocking team allowing the Mets to deal him. Would love to get back Bedrosian from the Angels in a Colon deal.
John (Chicago): Hi JJ, Thanks for chatting. He hasn't made the hot sheet this year, but 2012 2nd rounder Matt Reynolds is hitting .338/.393/.510 in Las Vegas. If you were a betting man, would you wager that he's just another Brad Emaus Las Vegas illusion or something more?
J.J. Cooper: Playing in Las Vegas does make it hard to judge stats. Reynolds .903 OPS actually ranks sixth among Las Vegas hitters with 100+ ABs. Potentially a utility infielder at the big league level, but until the Mets do something about their hole at shortstop, that makes him a starting candidate in New York.
2-3 and hit his 9th home run

They'll have to trade before August 31st so that player coming in is eligible for the playoffs.
