Thinking about finally stepping down to a short board.

I always have fun on my 7-10 but want something lighter and more agile for the bigger winter swells.

Has anyone gone from a long board to a shorter board and if so, how much of a learning curve am I looking at?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that I talked to you in the past about surfing. I live in encinitas and I surf, pipes, or beacons or tower 17 just about every morning. I'm riding a 7'6" takayama scorpion with a quad setup. Having surfed longboards for 20 years I consider my takayama a shortboard.

My son rides a couple of potatoe chips and he seems to really like them...I'd say give it try...if you don't like your board you can sell it.....right?
The long board vs. short board debate....

.
Get something thicker. It will be an easier transition.

You have to paddle harder for waves and get up quicker. Once on the wave i need to work harder to make the section.
Thanks Guys

Got a used 6'6 Flyer II from my buddy that I'm going to try out for awhile.

I surf Pipes, Beacons, O-Side Harbor and Moonlight depending on the swell.

Chris - Will I be seeing you at Fat Fish in PB this season?
I don't know what that is Styles

But I was at Beacons this morning at 6:45...I thought the tide was too high, so I went north to Ponto and my son and I had a great session there!

I ride a green scorpion and I'm pretty old...56...I'm a goof...if you see me at beacons...paddle over and say hi!
Newbie Here...

I'm 26, been wanting to learn to surf for quite some time. I am a big snowboarder and looking for something fun to do offseason/when I can't make it to the mountains.

I live in the NYC area. Where do you guys ride? any suggestion for a newb? Also what board/length/brand would you recommend? I weigh about 205lbs.

Do I take a lesson? Honestly would rather not go that route.

Thanks and I appreciate any advice.

I think there's a pier at the end of wall st....
Just kidding....I'm not sure where you would go for surf if you live in NYC. We live in north san diego county....so there are tons of great breaks here.

I would get a used board that had a bit of size and thickness.....or.... I'm not sure about the east coast, but out here Costco sells about an 8 foot softboard. it's a great learner and it's ony $99. (of course here is san diego I have seen guys just shred using those boards! )
Then just teach urself by going in as much as you can. Watch the other fellas out there and you'll figure out what to do....no lessons needed....

The best of luck to ya!!!
Appreciate the tips,

I've heard rockaway and long beach in nyc have pretty decent waves.

Was this the board you were thinking of?

What about rashgaurds? And Wax? And like how thick of a wetsuit for the colder months?

Sorry for all the questions but sounds like you have experience.
That's the one

I don't think that you need wax on it.

Get started in warm water...(right now)...cold water sux!!!

Sounds like you have the good energy to make it happen....

best to you bro!
