"The regular season is what counts, especially for a player with his resume."
Exactly what resume are we referring to here. JPP had one phenomenal year and has struggled for a variety of reasons ever since. I hope he gets back to who he was since this defense is counting on that kind of impact but to speak about him like he was a 7 time pro-bowler who had one sub-par season isn't realistic. Worse, I fear that attitude might be contributing to the "I don't need to make sacks in the pre-season" attitude. If JPP didn't have that one monster season, this board would be screaming "bust"
He's no doubt failed to live up to expectations as a pass rusher, but he's still an excellent player against the run. Even with the mediocre pass rush he's shown when healthy the last 2 years, he's a legit starting DE for most teams in the NFL.
The "problem" is that after 2011, the expectation was for him to develop into a perennial DPOY candidate. And he's fallen well short of those lofty expectations.

JPP hasn't really been healthy the last two years. I do totally agree though that expectations were very high after 2011. He is healthy this year so I am hopeful he at least probowls again. We need him to be a guy that requires double teaming on 3rd and long.
appearing to criticize JPP. First, I hope as much as everyone that he has another season like 2011. Second, I didn't say that he was a bust, I said that this board would be screaming that he was. To explain his problems to injury is fine and realistic, but I've seen many on this board already looking to run Ryan Nassib out of town for not being the second coming of Joe Montana and he was a 4th round pick at probably the position with the biggest leap from college to the pro level. Are you really telling me that if a first round pick like JPP finishes the season with 3 sacks people here (not always the most stable population) won't be having a fit and wondering why we ever let Osi walk?
I fully understand that JPP has been injured the last couple of seasons. I've got no criticism of him. My criticism, if you even want to call it that, was with the author's assertion that JPP has accomplished so much already (his resume) that there's clearly no need to even pay attention to his lack of performance in the first three pre-season games.
....over the last three years? Isn't our current D-Line coach responsible to some regard? Strahan spoke extensively in his HOF speech about what Earl Leggett meant to his career.

Can't imagine approaching things with this line of thinking...
