Don't you find it amazing that a team that has a .500 record

since 1996 is the most valuable franchise in the NFL followed closely by another team that has been terrible for much of the past 20 years.

Dallas and Washington...is there something wrong with this picture?

The world is upside down...rewarding failure!
They own their stadium.

It makes a big difference.
While winning is important
steve in ky : 8/21/2014 11:21 am : link
they really don't get paid to win, with exception of some token playoff money.
Win percentage doesn't have much to do with finance

The Knicks have been one of the top 3 most valuable franchises in the NBA consistently, for over a decade.
Understood although I know Jones also has

huge debt or mortgage on the stadium. Don't Giants/Jets own MetLife? They paid for it.

Also, wouldn't 20 years of mediocrity put their fan base in jeopardy? I guess not or is that just the juggernaut that is the NFL?
They are owned by carnival hucksters and are the best

It's not that surprising.

Toronto Maple Leafs are estimated to be the most valuable team by a heft margin (15-20% per Forbes). They last won a Cup in 1967 and have made the 16-out-of-30 team NHL playoffs once in nine seasons.

Knicks, Cowboys, Redskins, Leafs are all at or near the top of the value rankings because they generate the most revenue.
Needs a Parcells quote.

If the Redskins really do lose their trademark

after all the appeals are exhausted, their value as an enterprise will be dramatically reduced.
They have such a large national audience

When combined with owning that stadium, I'm not terribly surprised.

No. It will still be a NFL franchise.

And if that were to happen, Snyder would eventually give in, change the name and have a whole bunch of new shit to sell. Which would be a nice little windfall for just doing the right thing.

Not sure I agree. I guess you're thinking that they'd stick with the Redskins name and then revenues will be diluted by unlicensed sales. I think it is far more likely that they change their team name and enjoy a windfall of sales of new merchandise. Team name trademarks are a very interesting thing to value I'd bet.

Normally a trademark has value because the mark is recognizable and associated with quality. So "Coke" is valuable because some material percentage of people who walk into a store and see "Coke", "Mystery Soda A", and "Mystery Soda B" will pick "Coke" based on previous use of the product or good advertising/word of mouth. Team name trademarks strike me as very different -- more about looks and fandom, less about allowing the consumer to differentiate between substitutable products.

Also, any current valuation should already be taking into account the possibility of a loss of trademark or name change. I'd assume that on resale the name will change.
You can't get on the Cowboys
BigBlueinChicago : 8/21/2014 12:57 pm : link
for being the most valuable team in terms of worth and knock their lack of winning and then not mention the Knicks, who are the NBA's most valuable franchise despite not winning in 40+ years.

cowboys are also only team
TheBigBlue21 : 8/21/2014 1:09 pm : link
that does not participate in the league revenue share on merchandise. they take 100% of every cowboy merchandise purchased.
Hmmm

you could argue

that the giants organization leverages corporate welfare, nfl, owners, org, partners, and players benefit. The jersey taxpayer gets the bill.

The old giants stadium is torn down and jersey taxpayers are still paying for it. think about that one for a moment.
Not at all.

Jerry sucks as a GM but is a great businessman. He is building the new Cowboys coporate office and practice facilities in Frisco, Texas( north of Dallas) and is not put one dollar into the project. Being funded by the City of Frisco and their school district.

If he was a poor, they'd call him a welfare queen. But since he's rich, it's "great businessman".
