This sucks..but right now, the Eagles got this

I Love Clams Casino : 8/22/2014 8:04 am
Yes Yes Yes, it's only pre-season, blah blah, and this is why they play the games...I know all that, but today is today, and the "right now" is all we have.

Unless there are some drastic changes on either team, I see no reason the Eagles can not easily dispense with us. Also true for the Cowboys and the Redsk....errr...Washington. In fact, they looked scary good. They are humming at mid-season form. 17 seconds in between plays is insane. Their offensive line was literally just pancaking the Steelers, not that the Steelers are a measuring stick, but this is the NFL, and that should not happen play after play.

This is not a "give it all up without playing the season, it's over" thread...It's just an observation, I'd watch my Giants even if I thought they were going to lose all 16 games.

BTW - This thread is in some form my yearly accolade to the Eagles before the season starts. My thinking is that in my own distorted world, I must do this, for it will somehow jinx the Eagles so they don't hoist the Lombardi at the end of it all.

Pile on BBI, and be sure to bring up some of my irrational game day posts! Haha....

Eagles always have been the team to beat
DavidinBMNY : 8/22/2014 8:41 am : link
The keys are:
1) Will some Defense in YR 2 show a blueprint for stopping them?
2) Shady is the best RB in the league right now. Any chance of slowing him down
3) Foles threw 2 picks last year. 2! That happens again the rest of the division are doomed.

Sure, right now they're the favorite for good reason.
arcarsenal : 8/22/2014 8:44 am : link
But they play the games for a reason. Guys get hurt, people underperform, things happen. They don't just hand out division winners based on rosters and a couple preseason games.

I'm not too high on our team this year but to just dismiss the entire thing before it starts is silly. What the hell is even the point of being a fan or watching games if you're going to do that?
It's only preseason,
Tittle 9 20 64 : 8/22/2014 8:51 am : link
but they appear to have a very good offense. If they stay healthy they'll be a tough out. I hate the fucking Eagles!

BillKo : 8/22/2014 8:55 am : link
why do we always over react in preseason?

If any team looks good for any small duration, we jump on the bandwagon.

Do realize they looked pretty bad in Games 1 and 2.
Meh, even trying to be logical, whether they have us or not,
barens : 8/22/2014 8:58 am : link
I don't see a team that's ready to compete with the big boys yet. If they make the playoffs, I wouldn't give them a chance, but if we make the playoffs, however unlikely, we sure as shit have a good shot a knocking off some of the better NFC teams.

BTW, is it me, or are the left tackles in the NFC East(besides the Giants) some of the best in the NFL?

Right now is all we have. Great, lets all stay in the moment, but right now changes every day. So an injury here or there...a sudden improvement in the Giants and it all changes.

We can discuss this all day(and we should this is why we are on this site)but things are going to change a lot by opening day.

They hummed because that OL and RB McCoy are about as good as it gets. Give us LT Peters and RB McCoy and we humm too. But alas, Mr. Reese hasn't drafted for the OL very well and this year it may show. I still think this year's OL / TE / RB will be better than last year's but not by a tremendous degree which is what we really needed. I mean, our OL was among the three worst in the league last year and our TE position was among the three worst last year too. We couldn't run. I see improvement coming in all three areas but not by a huge margin.

that couldn't be more wrong.

You are basing this entirely off games that have zero meaning. Literally zero.

They are meant to test out gameplans, earn roster spots, try new things, etc.

Do you think the Eagles defense will be good? Do you think Maclin holds up for 16 games? How about Foles and the O-Line replicating last year?

I'd say all of the above are huge question marks.
I think some of you missed this part

First, you have the best name on BBI.

Second, Eagles offense will go as far as the o-line takes them. I watch almost all of their games as one of my best friends is an Eagles fan. Foles will have HUGE problems if you can pressure him. No one has.

Third, the Eagles defense has a lot of issues.

Fourth, the Eagles have some serious placekicker issues

Other general Eagle comments:

1. Ertz and Celeck may be the best TE combo in the league.
The rookie receiver, Mathews looks very good
2. They have much better RB depth than they have had in the past
3. Their first round pick does not look good - so far.
4. They have had virtually zero injuries and none to significant players.

its just preseason. Its about deciding who to cut, deciding who plays were, installing an offense, and keeping things vanilla. Its not about winning.

I am in the minority, but I still expect the Giants offense to light it up vs Detroit on Monday Night football.

Bradshaw #44 : 8/22/2014 9:46 am : link
the preseason no coaches prepare. Its all about seeing if you can beat your man across from you. Penalties are a disgrace the preseason.. The only thing I remember from each preseason is who got injured and put on reserve for the year. Ex. Stevie Brown.
I hate that Chip Kelly
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/22/2014 9:46 am : link
is the Eagles coach because I think very highly of him and I think the Eagles are going to cruise through the division this year. I don't think Foles is as good as he played last year, but I think their offensive sets, their fitness, health, and the pace at which they play allow that entire offense to move the ball comfortably.

Having to watch that while our offense looks like it's moving in water-logged clothing is going to be very frustrating.

in the NFL. In 2012 the Eagles were a sinking ship at 4-12 facing a long rebuild, the next year they win the division and are the favorites this year.

The Giants won the SB in 2011, and now they're projected by most for a poor year. Things change fast in the NFL.

Well, it's the backups winning these games against other backups. So the 3-0 is really the absolute most irrelevant part of all.

BSIMatt : 8/22/2014 10:04 am : link
but this is a little excerpt from an article that discusses differences between Air Coryell system and Walsh's system.

Quote:
At a practical level, one of the main differences in the two styles is in terminology. Coryell was the originator of the numbered NFL route tree, 0-9, and used them in play lingo to designate the routes for the X (split end), Y (tight end) and Z (flanker) receivers, with other players usually designated with a word. For example, "525 F-post Swing" -- X runs a 5, Y runs a 20 (inside receiver/tight end routes would typically have a multiple of 10 instead of a single digit, for brevity's sake), Z runs another 5 while the F-back (usually the fullback, but we'll explore that more) runs a post and the running back swings out of the backfield. Walsh's playcalling would feature the more complex verbage you're used to hearing in those NFL Films packages. Actually telling every player in the huddle exactly what route they were running in the huddle. So the same playcall would include "X-Curl Y-Cross Z-Curl" in place of the numbers. I'm not totally sure why, but I imagine it's so that it forces a quarterback to better memorize playcalls.
Haha

The Giants are not a good football team right now, but all they need is a few things to break right and they're at the top of the division. Anything can happen.

stinks IMO. Eagles are decent, but look better than they are because of how bad everyone else is in the division. It's also a long year, they lose Johnson for four weeks, and their secondary is suspect. But yes, they are better than the Giants.
TOTAL OVER REACTION
JoeD1 : 8/22/2014 10:18 am : link
Right now, on paper, the Eagles are probably only the 5th best team int he AFC

1. SEA 2 SF 3 GB? 4. NO?

I actually think, SF is going to take a step back this year with their injuries on defense, but we're talking on paper and last year's success for the moment.

The Eagles have NO LEGIT pass rusher. Zero. Our sack leader will have 6-7 sacks -- maybe.

The O-line is old. Mathis and Herremanes are the 2 oldest guards in the league. They could slow down at some point. Herremanes wasn't all that great last year

Depth is kind of thin. Maclin gets hurt every 10 plays. Outside of Maclin the WR Corp is a rookie and Riley Cooper.

Foles is going to throw more than 2 INTs all year

I still think the Eagles will win the division as it stands now. They will have a legit offense , but at best an "effective?" defense.

I don't think they are talented enough to win it all yet. A lot of question marks

The division does suck though. It really does. DAL and WSH will be horrible.

Preseason means nothing and you are right when it comes to standings. But when Rodgers, Peyton, luck go out and handle their business easily and yet we look lost, one can wonder what's taking so long. There are changes on all these teams perhaps not as much as ours but they are clicking.
I'm not drinking the Eagles' Kool-Aid yet
George : 8/22/2014 10:38 am : link
Nick Foles tossed exactly two interceptions last year. He will double that total by September 30 this season, at which time we'll see exactly how good the other 52 guys on that roster really are.

McCoy is their big play threat, and they've got a good OL. But Maclin isn't his old self, Jordan Matthews is untested, and Riley Cooper is not a game changer. Celek and Ertz are both good possession receivers, and they'll help Foles move the chains. But I actually fell pretty good with our current secondary lining up against their receiving corps.

The defense seems mediocre at best, and good offenses should have success against them.

Philadelphia will feast on weak teams: they play Dallas and Washington twice, Tennessee, Jville, and Houston, and that should give them seven wins right there. But I'm not sure how they handle the tougher part of their schedule, which means the key to their season might come down to their two games against the Giants.

Bottom Line

teams in the division all have terrible defenses, which really limits their upside. If there were an actual good team in the NFCE, it would be a real long shot for the Giants to even be playing meaningful games at the end of the year because our offense is so bad.

Philly, Dallas, and the Redskins should score points pretty effectively. They'll all be way more entertaining to watch than the Giants. But I don't think anybody will run away with the division because all of their defenses are really bad.
