Put up or Shut up for OL

brich30 : 8/22/2014 12:28 pm
Big night for all our OL, there is a ton of competition here(not a ton of talent).
I think playing the jets is a good barometer considering they have a strong and deep defensive front.
Hoping for significant improvement from the OL with Beatty returning to form coupled with a better blocking TE than Myers.

I think it shakes out:
Beatty-Schwartz-Walton-RIchburg-Pugh

But then again anything is an improvement from last years group.

Should we just ante and go for Boone? Maybe cut Schwartz (not sure of cap ramifications)since he's adequate at about 4 million a year
Cut Schwartz

It didn't take too much thinking to come up with the starting lineup. After tonight, try to justify it.

Cutting Schwartz makes a lot of sense - NOT
I keep hearing about the oline

Our WRs get zero separation so far. Pass catchers (WRs and TE) may be worse.

Getting separation requires time, which they're not getting from the line. Cruz didn't forget how to play. He's been out there to be thrown at.

They simply haven't tried to throw a lot with the 1st. When they have tried it, Eli's been running, or ducking and chucking.
Easy there

All you can hope for here is that the OL has some semblance of knowing what to do. This is a test for which OL men will be part of the starting line up and where.

Part two Have these new lineman in the new configuration assimilated the scheme of the new offense enough to do it without thinking?

Part three Are they athletic enough to carry it out?

Above all ,,,,,NO ONE GETS HURT!!

It will also be a test for the defensive back seven to see how well they have learned to communicate and to work as a team.
I would say put up or shut up time would occur sometime in

the regular season when the playoff picture is narrowing and not week 3 of preseason

I completely disagree. The have been times when they have gotten good protection and there were times last year as well. But far too often when the Oline has managed to get it done the pass catchers haven't. The line is the scapegoat, but the pass catchers have been similarly horrid.
Some perspective on the OL

Eli has attempted 16 passes this preseason through 3 games.

Andrew Luck attempted 18 passes just last week against the Giants alone.

For as much as they seem to want to and need to practice the new offense, they're not really doing much but handing off. That might be because they don't trust the OL yet. It's really hard to judge with any certainty how the WRs and TEs are doing with the first team.

I have forgotten(for the moment) how little Eli has thrown this preseason
Only 16 passes cause he's done

Very good point. Some of that has been due to all the 3 and outs. But with starters expected to play into the 3rd quarter, we should get a much better look tonight.
Right now Eli has Happy Feat....

He will blitzed like crazy and they will stack the box. He will throw very short or bombs...this will not work till the OL and schemes get fixed...

I think this is the major factor regarding the Giants success or lack of for the 2014 season. My greatest curiosity is having these guys not playing there natural position. Mosley sure looks like a RT to me. He is tall, large, powerful, and does not appear to be the most nimble afoot.Schwartz appears to have had most of his NFL success as a RG. Richburg does not appear large or powerful enough to be an NFL guard at this stage of his cereer. Jerry looks the part of a G but appears to be lacking performance wise. The Giants sure seem to have configured this line based upon the far fetched assumption that Snee could and would play. Once set, they have seemed reluctant to change it since minicamps. I am not an NFL coach but I do scratch my head on this one.
