We needed to have a good draft and so far it looks good. This assumes WR Odell Beckham eventually gets healthy and produces.
thanks all for updates.....game was not shown in PA

Some questions:

Are ANY of our FA pick ups besides defensive backfield....good? the balance all seem to suck.

Will Schwartz's injury.....be a blessing disguise? Improve OL and move him finally to LG when he returns...

JPP looks like shit. No impact at all.
Victor in CT : 8/23/2014 7:48 am : link
Is he saving it for opening day? Or does he miss having Osi and other there to draw attention away from him?
As noted in the write-up,

again, the over-officiating is making the games less enjoyable for me to watch.
Also, the write-up on Manning is lazy.

Doesn't factor in pressure at all.

me too. It's turning into the NBA style whistle ball. Flags on every play.
Jernigan drops a pass so he's automatically a dud
ImaGiant86 : 8/23/2014 8:13 am : link
yet his contribution for starting the 2nd quarter touchdown drive with two catches and another in the red zone is left out.

I like Nassib, and am rooting for him
odunde : 8/23/2014 9:35 am : link
but to say right now he looks like the Giants qb of the future seems like as big an overreaction as calling him a bust a few weeks ago.
Jeez
Jeffro : 8/23/2014 9:45 am : link
If you called Nassib a bust before last week, that is an awful quick trigger and shows that you never saw him play before he was drafted.

one week of preseason. You go from Nassib sucks balls to this:

Quote:

I’d like to see him play with the starters because honestly, I’m starting to think the Giants have found their quarterback of the future.

Is it too hard to just say that Nassib looks like he's picking up the offense much better and you'd like to see what he can do with the starters. Why the need to throw in that he's the QB of the future after you were killing him 8 days ago. Maybe it was the other beat writers wondering if he would be cut because painter had one good series, it's laughable, though.

Nassib went from being trash to the QB of the future in about a week. I can't wait to see what opinion we shall form next week..

bingo. Remember the DL low sack numbers before Osi's return from injury in 2011. Osi drew two blockers even in his first game back and produce a sack fumble.
Even in the 1st preseason game, I thought Nassib did some good things.
arcarsenal : 8/23/2014 10:23 am : link
I never really understood the "Nassib sucks" people. I'm also not on the other extreme side thinking he's already shown he is Eli's heir apparent but I think writing him off based on extremely limited samples last year behind dreadful pass protection made little sense. I've been impressed with him so far this summer and I think he's making really solid progress.
The one thing I take from Nassib playing well...
okiegiant : 8/23/2014 10:27 am : link
is the Giants can go with 2 QB's and save a roster spot.
Sure seems like the NFL
Killed the K-Gun : 8/23/2014 10:41 am : link
Wants to see each team score at least 30 points.

First to 50 wins.
When the giants run the short passing game
hitdog42 : 8/23/2014 10:48 am : link
they are fine... when they run play action and 5 step drop, they are in trouble for a variety of reasons... the line stinks... Eli's pocket presence has been poor, and WR arent getting open.
I would imagine the giants will use more of the 3 step come the regular season until (if ever) they build cohesion and confidence.

Last night was actually an improvement... so I am going to view it that way.
Though one thing about the short passing game is that if you hesitate for a split second.. and then throw, you are looking at a pick 6. the jets should have had one.

also there is a total misconception about our pass rush and D line so far in my view. We are getting pressure... we just arent finishing and we have faced QBs that arent stationary objects (Luck and Geno)-
The run D will see a big pick up once Beason comes back as well.

I have to say one more thing on the DL
Mason : 8/23/2014 11:02 am : link
I agree with hitdog that the Giants have generated a lot of pressure on QBs but I have noticed that officials have allowed DL men to get tackled to the ground, routinely held from behind without calling a foul. Not just Giants games but most preseason games. When the QB is chased out of the pocket, officials seem reluctant to call this type of holding call this preseason. I mean it is pretty obvious where all you see a OL running after a defender grabbing his jersey as he chase the QB.
Randy
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/23/2014 11:19 am : link
Not sure I agree with you about Manning write-up being lazy...Connor harped on the OL having Manning running for his life throughout.

I thought he was generous to put Manning on any kind of "good" list.

Manning wasn't "good" last night. Nassib - again - was the better quarterback. Hurts for me to say that because Eli's my favorite player.
I'll

get killed for saying this, but if Coughlin wasn't the head coach, and if Eli wasn't a 2-time Super Bowl MVP, Nassib may have earned the starting job on this team.
I actually think Eli looked good last night. Give him decent time and
PatersonPlank : 8/23/2014 11:26 am : link
he was hitting people. His rollouts were also better than I was expecting. IMO, the offense as a whole looked much improved. They shot themselves in the foot on a number of drives (penalty, OL breakdown, fumble), but they were moving the ball. This is much better than being out outplayed.

This was a improvement in my eyes.
I'm interested in watching the relationship with the new OC and Eli

Meh, that's reasonable except that Eli is a 2X Super Bowl MVP that carried his team on his back all the way to another ring in 2011. Considering the offensive line woes (even in 2011), you'd be crazy to name Nassib the starter. ANY coach would give a proven QB time to get the system down. If he's playing like crap mid-season , then it may be time to put Nassib in. Until then, you have to give Eli a long rope.

Eric no one will kill you over your statement

However I do reserve the right to wonder if you are on crack. Two decent to good preseason performances, especially after the thought police on BBI said he was a wasted draft pick up to then, does not earn a starting job. It does earn a solid place as the #2 QB, and better yet, not having to carry 3 of them.

Those damn Super Bowls. So if Eli didn't win those titles and just had the regular season success and maybe 2-3 less postseason wins, nassib still wins the job? I disagree. The job was never open and wouldn't be open and if Eli doesn't have all that prior success than he isn't "Eli manning" -- so it's kind of moot...

to nipick,

but it's been three games. He played well in the preseason opener too (as I pointed out when people were slamming him after Steelers game).

Pros for Nassib...he fits this offense better...he's younger and cheaper...he's going to get better...he can extend a play when the OL breaks down (and it will break down a lot this year).

I think this is a rebuilding club. It's why I'd go with youth when possible...why I'd risk McManus over Brown, Washington/Parker/Harris over Jernigan, etc.

pre-season to an unproven backup? (Good of you to acknowledge two SBs as being a factor in Eli's favor.)

You'd get killed for that statement, deservedly, if you were just about any other poster on this site. And if you had a 'z' in your handle, forget it.

But because you're you, it'll probably largely slide by. So, like Eli, you're probably just grateful to be established.
We're putting up 30 pts on Detroit opening day

This is really stupid - and I've been both harsh on Eli over the previous year and a half and a supporter of Nassib.
If both qbs came in to this camp
djm : 8/23/2014 11:53 am : link
With an even slate? The camp battle would have been crafted much differently.
Nassib was as good as I've seen him
Joey in VA : 8/23/2014 11:54 am : link
The cloud appears to have been lifted. You can see a young QB when he rushes and makes mistakes and you know he's just not sure what to do in certain situations and they end up looking terrible. Last week Nassib greatly progressed and this week he took off. He was operating the offense the way it is supposed to run and he was moving in the pocket and outside of it exactly the way it's supposed to be done.

Think of the QBs who have been in this system, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and aging Brett Favre. All three moved well laterally, have compact throwing motions and throw well on the go. The onus on a monster OL lessens when your QB is running waggles and getting on the edge to find his targets. Thats what was most telling to me last night. Nassib had the same level of protection as Eli but his ability to pull the ball down, get outside and make a throw was simply superior to Eli's and that's an age/athleticism thing.

This system is better suited to a guy with Nassib's skill set. NO I am not declaring him a better QB overall but he's a better fit for this scheme by far and I think if Eli doesn't light it up, this is Nassib's team next year and you see a major shift in how this offense runs.

I initially had the same feeling with how Nassib broke out and I killed for having no touch on passes, especially short ones.

However, I thought when Eli had time, when he did, he hit guys perfectly, especially during the 2 minute drive. Now the 2 minute drive was interesting because the routes are usually routes designed to get the ball out quickly and are close to the sidelines, or have the sideline in mind to stop the clock.

Come back to JJ - 5 yards
Hitch to JJ - 9 yards
Square out to Cruz - 16 yards
Int but over ruled; Looked like a roll right- come back route, but Cruz didn't work back.

Sail route to Cruz
Inc. throw away. Again sideline routes ran.
Roll Left-Cruz Arrow route to left sideline (legal pick)
Penalty false start
TD to RR comeback in the endzone.

They didn't work to the TE or hit the seem or even throw deep. Everything was sideline associated routes or hitches, and comebacks. We moved the pocket to help, but this is why I am interested to see how cruz does in this offense and how this system could suit him better.

I want to see more of these associated routes. We went from nothing clicking to 1 stellar drive where things clicked. I like the routes associated in this 2 minute drill and hope we utilize these passing concepts when we are NOT in 2 minute mode

The cost/benefits of having another QB over the expensive Eli is a different discussion altogether - and one that may gain traction if Eli struggles once again this year. Whether Nassib is that guy, I don't know (and think it's far too premature for this discussion since I think Eli will bounce back and have a relatively successful year).
Nassib is playing against 2's and 3's, not the starters
PatersonPlank : 8/23/2014 11:58 am : link
Big, big difference. Hell you could say the same thing about Painter. He has looked better against the 2's and 3's than Eli against the 1's also. It boils down to our OL, WRs, and TE's versus other teams 1's.
Eric
odunde : 8/23/2014 11:59 am : link
I won't argue that Nassib has outplayed Eli in the preseason. However, Eli has been playing against the ones, while Nassib has had maybe four pass attempts against ones? It is silly to say that Nassib would be challenging for the job if not for Eli's superbowls, because we have no idea how Nassib would hold up against first team defenses.
Most informed Giants said that Nassib was a 2 year QB that
fredgbrown : 8/23/2014 12:01 pm : link
had a bad game 2 weeks ago, not that he was a bust now. It happens some young players have bad games in their development.

Manning is my favorite Giant.

It pains me to say this.

And I may be DEAD wrong.

But my gut tells me many of you will be singing a different tune by Week 12.
Nassib
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/23/2014 12:04 pm : link
hasn't just been "good" this past two games. He's been really, really good.

And as Joey points out...he can slide away from pressure. When Eli starts doing that, he looks like a clusterfuck.
Eric,
AnishPatel : 8/23/2014 12:06 pm : link
I thought of the same thing before the 2 minute drive. So I agree that could be the case. However, the 2 minute drive showed me when he did have blocking, when we did move the pocket, he made plays. Those type of routes associated in the 2 minute fit Eli perfectly, and I think more of those routes in this offense can help him.
I'm watching now for the first time
Bill in UT : 8/23/2014 12:06 pm : link
Just finished the first half. I didn't think JPP looked as bad as I've been reading here. It wasn't all bullrushes that went nowhere. And Jernigan did make 3 catches. I'm still realy frustrated with Eli though. He got stripped twice while scrambling and easily could have been picked on that short rollout the Cruz. A little less luck and he could have turned it over 3 times in the half. He's gotta play smarter than that.
AnishPatel
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/23/2014 12:08 pm : link
the 2-minute drive should have ended with another bone-headed decision by Eli.
Nobody will be singing the tune of Nassib winning the job *now*
vibe4giants : 8/23/2014 12:08 pm : link
That's your solo.

Of course, if Eli struggles for his third consecutive season, people will have to come to terms with that reality. But that's changing your original tune. Which was about what's happening now, not might be happening in week 12.
Eric From BBI
AnishPatel : 8/23/2014 12:12 pm : link

But it didn't.. Just like Asante S., based on the quality of the player should have picked off the ball, which he has done throughout his career, but it didn't. Strahan says Eli falls on his on in practice, so by all accounts, he should have been sacked, but he didn't.

The fact remains the routes and passing concepts used in the 2 minute passing is what fits Eli and even Cruz. If Ben M. is serious about meeting with the QBs and asking their input then I hope we add a lot more of these concepts.
Maybe Reese wasnt totally wrong on Nassib

That's a big IF.. Eli will be 35 in Jan. in 2 years when his contract expires. So do we want to re-sign a 35 year old QB or is that the perfect age to part ways?
