BBI, I'll be the hardass, why don't more people contribute?

manh george : 8/24/2014 5:41 pm
In his newest note on the topic, Eric notes that the contributions come from the same people from year to year, and that last week only a dozen contributions were received.

That means there are many, many hundreds who visit the site regularly, enjoy it in some fashion, and don't contribute a plugged nickel. What is that about? Is it the modern idea that everything on the Internet should be free? Is it laziness? Is it cheapness? Is it a suspicion that Eric is somehow double-dipping? (If it's that be man enough to say so.)

I wonder how many of those who don't contribute would be upset if the site were shut down. Of that group, I wonder how many could afford $20 a year or some such?

I just don't understand the thinking. Crap on me all you like, but also consider your own motives. I think this sucks, even if we squeak through again for another year.

Pile on me all you like, now. Then go to Paypal.

While this is a more than worthy reason, not everyone has had the same 'family' experience with BBI that you have had. To some, it's just a site they read and they have no desire to meet (or interact with) other BBIers.

Fair enough, but NOT my point per se to the poster..The poster said it was just a website as others are. I was pointing out the difference, to me, of this vs other websites. Non-personal interaction is fine as the are no "rules of engagement." Just citing the extra BONUS, to me, of being here..

A quick note: If nothing else, Just the DAILY threads by DefenderDawg with all his Giants and around the league news that would take us an inordinate amount of time to access on our own, is worth a donation, imv..I daresay, very few if any posters provide that ANYWHERE on the web..

I feel the same way. I took a break for BBI a year ago, and really, my quality of life improved: less wasted time. But I still feel like just taking without giving something back is lame.

Brett: good counterexamples with Reddit and Facebook. We do use sites were we just "take" content. There are a lot of sites like that. Honestly, do they do donation drives? I don't know. If not, they don't count. Wikipedia would be a good example though.

if you come here frequently and use the site and can afford to donate...anything, I think people should. I will donate - people have a right to ask others to donate. I appreciate the site.

It takes Eric and others a good deal of time, effort, and money to keep the site up and running. People come here and think they shouldn't pay, while others shoulder the burden. Pretty surprised we have this back and forth every year.
I love how HeadHunter is telling other people to stfu
AnotherGiantsFan : 8/25/2014 9:07 am : link
and not give reasons when that's exactly what the OP was asking for. But if we're being honest, the OP just wanted to guilt the people who haven't donated.

I'm not proud that I don't donate, but I feel no guilt either. I use this site as a message board. I don't really read any of the BBI articles or go to BBI get togethers. If you asked me what was on the BBI front page right now I wouldn't be able to tell you. I post things that I feel like saying and read posts that other people feel like saying.

That being said, I don't understand why Eric wouldn't just let the ad's go crazy and to put his Amazon thing as a sticky. He's really not taking advantage of the platform he has IMO.
....
SamTheTram : 8/25/2014 9:12 am : link
Eric the answer is simple.

Tell people to film themselves dumping water on their head and the contributions will multiply ten fold!

Don't get me wrong, I've donated in the past. And I too took a break and even changed my handle and I also found I wasted much less time than when I posted under my previous handle. I was just commenting on the silly notion of everybody freaking out if BBI were to shut down.
I don't view the threat of shutdown as credible, anyway.

then you shouldn't donate. I can't speak for Eric, but I doubt he wants money from people who can't afford it.

There's plenty of people who can afford it, and spend shit loads of time here who don't donate.

When people complain about things on the site to Eric, the first thing I would do if I were him is check if they donated. If they didn't donate, I'd kindly tell them to fuck off

That model has been a consistent failure on the internet. New people will not pay for an account when they haven't experienced whether it's worth it or not.

it works with the old people. I think my father is one of the 1M+ people who still pay AOL for dial-up because they can't figure out how to cancel.

Eric should target the older BBI crowd, get on auto-pay plans and those usually even last until a few months (at least) past death.

Problem is when most people experience BBI (or at least the forum) they won't want to pay for that either.

Sorry not buying the blase attitude..Many of us check in a zillion times a day..You think you can flick a switch and simply go elsewhere? Most other sites really, really suck, format and information-wise...As far as football is concerned(my only sports interest), I'd feel the loss of BBI big time..No problem admitting that..Not sure how many others would honestly come clean about that

I'm with you on that one Doc, were this place to disappear I'd miss the hell out of it.

As far as pricing goes, a subscription to post would kill new signup numbers to the long term detriment of the site, and I'm not a fan of separate boards for paying members, as that dilutes the conversation. Perhaps creating user tiers instead? Have level 1 be free, can view and comment on threads, but not create new threads. Level 2 for $5 a month or $50 a year (incentive discount on the longer term purchase) gets full privileges to create new threads as well as the basic level 1 rights. Would that work? I don't know, it's something I think most folks would be able to afford though.
It is not the football

The other way around might work though. Maybe you charge current members an amount that would be painless for most ($5 or $10 per year), and then you let newcomers use it for free for a year or two before they pay the $5 or $10.
