In his newest note on the topic, Eric notes that the contributions come from the same people from year to year, and that last week only a dozen contributions were received.
That means there are many, many hundreds who visit the site regularly, enjoy it in some fashion, and don't contribute a plugged nickel. What is that about? Is it the modern idea that everything on the Internet should be free? Is it laziness? Is it cheapness? Is it a suspicion that Eric is somehow double-dipping? (If it's that be man enough to say so.)
I wonder how many of those who don't contribute would be upset if the site were shut down. Of that group, I wonder how many could afford $20 a year or some such?
I just don't understand the thinking. Crap on me all you like, but also consider your own motives. I think this sucks, even if we squeak through again for another year.
Pile on me all you like, now. Then go to Paypal.
...gingers, amirite?
Oh man! What a clever one you are!
Now, if only Mike McCreary was a banned BBI member.
You certainly know your gingers. Good for you!
Similar to the way the NFL levies fines, the amount could increase with each subsequent banning.
And, it should start with a genuinely punitive amount. Like, say, a $100 fine for the first banning, $250 for the second banning, and $500 for the third banning. Then, after three bannings, the offending poster would have to pay a fine of $1,000 to be reinstated.
If a banned member truly loves BBI THAT much, and is willing to spend his/her money to be reinstated, then this "Banned-Member Fine" system could actually benefit the site.
After all, as I've already stated, banned members CAN and DO continue to visit, and benefit from, BBI. Why not get some money from these people?
100 seems high for 1 banning but don't hate the idea. 50 for 1st offense,150 for 2nd and 500 for 3rd after that
Send me an email Eric when you get my check. Best,
Frank
Then you'll see the donations rolling in. Most people expect the site to be here regardless. Whether or not that's fair is for others to decide but I'm pretty sure that's how it is right now.
And whether or not people donate to bbi, there needs to be a call out thread for donations? Is everyone also donating to the Giants? Or Giants.com?
I enjoy the website and I won't disclose whether or not I donate. That said, you're not a hardass, you're just shortsighted.
I donate because I spend way too much time on here hungrily snuffing up every thing I can of meaning about the Giants - and this site has it. I know and have met Eric and I know and have spent time with Gary - they are not making a lot of money doing this - they do it because they love doing it and they give of themselves until it hurts - I don't always agree with Eric - but I support him because of what he's been able to assemble, it's excellence, and the fact that I would be very unhappy if this site wasn't around.
When I'm able to - I give what I can - when times are tough - and I can't give - I don't.
The idea that everything on the internet should be free???? - That's a bunch of bull. Someone has to pay - the question is who should.
Given that - Eric purposely doesn't allow a lot of ads on BBI - and removes them when they disturb the quality of life here - he gets a pittance for the advertising; that he puts up with a lot of grief from a lot of morons all year round; that he spends a ton of time keeping this site ship-shape and posting insightful, biting, thought provoking and stimulating content, and remains very dedicated to all this - along with a full time job and a two kid nuclear family - makes it merit your consideration.
Ask yourself - what you value more - being able to visit this site - and would you have wished you gave something if you are/were able, and it would have made the difference in this site staying online or not .... If the answer is that you are able and really would rather give something to see the site remain - and wouldn't appreciate it not being around - then you should donate - you have reasons to.
For my money this is the finest NY Giants site anywhere - bar anything else that is available - it has provided me and my family and friends with outstanding opportunities as a fan - unavailable elsewhere - and I personally place a value on that which make it worth a few bucks every once and a while and I place that value forward so that I know that I have done what I can so it remain available to me.
Eric, thanks for this great site.
If the BBI powers-that-be actually put effort into a transparent, reasonable moderation system, I would be more than happy to open my checkbook.
Oh well.
Eric solicits donations for the site, but doesn't provide much, if any context for what my donation should be. This isn't like going to the grocery store and being asked to figure out how much a pound of apples should cost. I literally have no clue what it costs Eric to keep the site running and I don't know what is expected of me or others. He has repeatedly turned down opening up his books to the very people he's asking for money from. Ultimately I still donate because I 100% believe Eric to be a genuine person just trying to keep a good thing going here. Even in the FAQ for the campaign, the question of "How much should I donate?" is answered with "Whatever you're comfortable with" or something.
Just give me a number. I value what this site provides and I'm happy to help support it (I donated the last two years). But I find the whole "name your own price" in a situation where I'm being asked to determine the "value" of his hard work and my enjoyment a bit off-putting.
Again, it's by no means a big deal or a deal-breaker for me. I just think it's strange creating a situation where guys like manh george all of sudden looking into the pockets of strangers for a monetary value that is personal and elusive.
/rant over?
Route 9 - you were in the front of the line taking advantage - with your family and your little girl - for a once in a lifetime opportunity with Antrel Rolle - that was given to you courtesy of this site and the contributions of BBIers - That's how that trophy gets paid for
This - ( New Window )
On the other hand, some of you guys have given some extremely disingenuous reasons for your decisions and I hate bad rationalizations. If you don't feel like it then don't donate. Pretty simple, if you ask me.
Ironically, before posting this, I guessed who would be the biggest attackers. I wasn't disappointed.
Now I know Eric recently said he was approached by Scout and turned them down, but that doesn't mean he can't use that model. It would triple his income*(at least) and no more begging and making people feel guilty who don't donate for whatever reason (income, principle, not getting a thank you note, etc.).
It would be easy to set up and more profitable and no more begging.
Win, win, win.
That really is an excellent analogy
Just my opinion, no matter your income or current situation, if you use the site for football info or many of the other threads that generate discussion you should kick some to the site. Be it even $1 it still adds up. This site has been a staple in many peoples lives for years and that deserves some kind of a contribution IMO...
like that gives you credibility
like that gives you credibility
so in a thread asking why more people don't donate, you tell people who give actual reasons to stfu?
I donate some years. Others, I don't. Was going to this year and then got massively turned off by some of the drek that was allowed to post some amazingly offensive nonsense here. "Oh, they're sorry so they are allowed back after 5 seconds" is horseshit.
Maybe that will all change to me--but for now, fuck off.
So stay off threads asking why?
Then, right in the OP is this:
And then HH:
like that gives you credibility
Awesome.
