In his newest note on the topic, Eric notes that the contributions come from the same people from year to year, and that last week only a dozen contributions were received.
That means there are many, many hundreds who visit the site regularly, enjoy it in some fashion, and don't contribute a plugged nickel. What is that about? Is it the modern idea that everything on the Internet should be free? Is it laziness? Is it cheapness? Is it a suspicion that Eric is somehow double-dipping? (If it's that be man enough to say so.)
I wonder how many of those who don't contribute would be upset if the site were shut down. Of that group, I wonder how many could afford $20 a year or some such?
I just don't understand the thinking. Crap on me all you like, but also consider your own motives. I think this sucks, even if we squeak through again for another year.
Pile on me all you like, now. Then go to Paypal.
Then shouldn't you be complaining to mg for asking instead of the folks that are answering the question in the OP?
Still would have been a poor analogy. They don't ask for, nor receive donations other than the bodily fluid kind.

and it's usually involves more begging than asking, does it not?
Appeals are one thing. Blackmail and ransom are different.
I don't know, if this place were to shut down for any period of time, I'd just move along. I'd go back to getting my Giants news from the beat writers and now FB and my current events from the news. Hell, I'd probably even be a little more productive at work.

That really is an excellent analogy
It's actually a terrible analogy.
I have mixed feelings about this thread. On one hand, I like that old people have something to feel good about themselves over. On the other, I hope they don't hurt themselves in the circle jerk.
Make sure to donate to Facebook, Youtube and reddit!
Well then, may I suggest you move on again? This is BOTH family and a website..Through this site I have made lifelong friends. Some have been guests at my house..Others I saw every summer during training camp in Albany..We've shared an awful lot offline...I have become friendly with people associated with the Giants and some reporters because of this site.
There are websites and then there is BBI..ASIDE from those who truly are experiencing hard times, a $10-15 donation(or less if that's all you can afford) in lieu of a few packs of cigs or a few drinks, is ALL it would take
While this is a more than worthy reason, not everyone has had the same 'family' experience with BBI that you have had. To some, it's just a site they read and they have no desire to meet (or interact with) other BBIers.

Fair enough, but NOT my point per se to the poster..The poster said it was just a website as others are. I was pointing out the difference, to me, of this vs other websites. Non-personal interaction is fine as the are no "rules of engagement." Just citing the extra BONUS, to me, of being here..
A quick note: If nothing else, Just the DAILY threads by DefenderDawg with all his Giants and around the league news that would take us an inordinate amount of time to access on our own, is worth a donation, imv..I daresay, very few if any posters provide that ANYWHERE on the web..
It would save the trouble of relying on charity.
It's a series of tubes. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

Good point, Curtis, that was very sexist.
I feel the same way. I took a break for BBI a year ago, and really, my quality of life improved: less wasted time. But I still feel like just taking without giving something back is lame.
Brett: good counterexamples with Reddit and Facebook. We do use sites were we just "take" content. There are a lot of sites like that. Honestly, do they do donation drives? I don't know. If not, they don't count. Wikipedia would be a good example though.
It takes Eric and others a good deal of time, effort, and money to keep the site up and running. People come here and think they shouldn't pay, while others shoulder the burden. Pretty surprised we have this back and forth every year.
I'm not proud that I don't donate, but I feel no guilt either. I use this site as a message board. I don't really read any of the BBI articles or go to BBI get togethers. If you asked me what was on the BBI front page right now I wouldn't be able to tell you. I post things that I feel like saying and read posts that other people feel like saying.
That being said, I don't understand why Eric wouldn't just let the ad's go crazy and to put his Amazon thing as a sticky. He's really not taking advantage of the platform he has IMO.
Tell people to film themselves dumping water on their head and the contributions will multiply ten fold!

are entertaining enough for me to not want to voluntarily move along. But if it went away, I wouldn't lose any sleep. Just like any number of websites I visit.

Don't get me wrong, I've donated in the past. And I too took a break and even changed my handle and I also found I wasted much less time than when I posted under my previous handle. I was just commenting on the silly notion of everybody freaking out if BBI were to shut down.
Yeah, well Brett has been blowing random dudes in the bathroom at Penn station to support his meth habit, and he still donated.
I'm sorry you you got laid off but there's no way in hell I would have done the same. I guess that shows your loyalty to this internet message board?

Given most are repeats, I wouldn't call them random.

I wouldn't exactly call infecting random dudes with the herp "donating".
