Giants averaging 10 penalties a game...

M.S. : 8/24/2014 8:48 pm
...so far this exhibition season, good for an average of 84 yards a game.

Our opponents: 7.5 a game / 54 yds a game.

Giants need to fix a lot of things. Penalties are one of them. Just not enough horses on this team to overcome all the laundry on the field.

Hard to know what's cause and effect some times with bad teams. Either teams are bad because they commit a lot of penalties; or, they get a lot of penalties because the refs know they are bad.

It can be a vicious cycle.

Would be nice for the men in Blue to break this one before the season starts.

They have enough weights tied to them without creating any more for themselves.

I'd put close to zero stock in the penalties right now.

It's clear that they're throwing an inordinate amount of flags across the entire league this preseason. If we're still getting flagged more than most teams when the regular season is underway, that's one thing. This? Hardly worth mentioning.
The offensive penalties

are concering, especially the delay of game crap I thought was going away.

the defensive illegal contact, agree 100% with arc, that's an experiment.
I'll wait until the regular season to determine

whether or not penalties will be more of an issue for the Giants than for good teams... In fact, I'll wait until then to determine if they will be a bad team or not, too.
Could someone post a flow chart on penalties committed by all 32 teams

during the first three weeks of the preseason, over the last five years? This seems like a really important statistic.
pjcas18: Good post.

Coughlin seems to see it the same way you do: the flags for incidental contact downfield have to end when the season begins. He's not going to have Merritt and Giunta tell the DBs to let receivers run free just to avoid those flags, because that issue will largely solve itself. I think we might see stricter enforcement of the five-yard limit than in past years, but only for avoidable contact that might influence the play.

That said, some of the penalties have pissed him off. He mentioned hands to the face as a particular item that needs to be cleaned up, because it will draw a flag every time.
Penalty

analysis is complicated. But do consider that inferior players commit more penalties than good ones. They have a hard time performing their tasks within the rules. An o-lineman holds, a wide receiver pushes off to get open. That said, I don't see any reason why Coughlin should not be concerned about the illegal contact calls his DBs have been getting. This isn't a case where they're trying to disguise their true intent. It is basic football. And the same calls will be made once the season begins in earnest.

...well played, Sir!

You articulated the crucial issue far better than I ever could.
Didn't they flash a stat during the game
PeterS : 8/25/2014 11:06 am : link
that showed penalties were about maybe 20% from same time last year?

Yeah but it was like 44%, not 20%.. the amount of flags they are throwing this preseason has been insane.
