Say he never practices before the final cuts have to be made on 8/31/14. Do they have to keep him on the active roster, counting against the final 53, or are there other alternatives?
they could also cut him or place him on IR. Seeing as he is practicing (albiet limited), both options are about as likely as me hooking up with Kate Upton.
The only potentially logical alternative is to put him on the short term IR which the Giants fucked up their first year and then used it on someone (Andre Brown?), the following year. I truly doubt they use it on him but I really hope that they let it heal and then wait two more weeks. Hamstrings and quad injuries are very tricky and, imo, the only way to fully recover from it is to let it heal and wait a little longer. Too many players feel good, slowly come back and reaggravate it making it much longer than initially anticipated. I know most fans are frustrated with it but getting him back now doesn't help. I know some are worried about the lack of work with our QB. The lack of practicing and so on but I would much rather have him for the second half of the season (worst case scenario if you fully let it heal) then to get rushed back because camp is SO important and then lose him a few days later.
He would still need to make the "final 53" before he can be "designated to return".
Seeing how only 45 dress each game, even if he can't go the first 2-3 weeks, the short term IR makes no sense (hammy/quad shouldn't be much longer since he's practicing in individuals). They are likely to keep at least 6 WRs and 1-2 will be inactive each week anyway.
That said, Harris could be the odd man out due to the Beckham injury since he's likely unavailable the first few games as well. If they only keep 6 WRs, with Harris/ODB out that would leave them with only 4 active WRs the first couple games. Key Dates - ( New Window )
How can ODB not know what route to run when a play is called? I understand he has not been practicing but he should have the play book down and what kind of route to run when the play is called.

It's not just knowing his route. He also needs to be able to read the defense pre-snap and adjust if he is the hot read. And the timing between he & Manning needs to be there (see Nicks last year for an example of what happens when the timing is off due to no practice time).
However, the Giants may keep him inactive until they are absolutely sure the hammy is not an issue. I guess he practiced a week or two too early and BANG his hammy goes again. It happens, it is football.
With Beckham. The guy pulled his hamstring. It is not a two second recovery and he already had false starts on getting back too quickly. Does this suck? Sure. But it is going to take time.

Thanks for the correction. Point remains the same. Beckham will just be the WR inactive for the 1st couple games until he's up to speed & healthy.
and go to endzone

"Can he go on PUP?"
