A few veteran linemen released that could provide depth

Vin_Cuccs : 8/26/2014 7:11 pm
Precursor: I'm aware that more established, more talented linemen might be released during the next wave of cuts but there were a few cut over the last few days that might be good depth, developmental players or practice squad guys. I realize the likelihood of finding a starter on the waiver wire is extremely slim.

OG Mike McGlynn: 6'4" 325 pounds. 29 yeards old. 4th round pick of the Eagles in 2008. Played for the Redskins, Bengals and Colts. Can also play center, but best position is guard. Journeyman type who can fill in as a serviceable starter.

OG Antoine Caldwell: 6'3" 315 pounds. 28 years old. 3rd round pick of the Texans in 2009. Again serviceable player, and can also play center but is a much better guard. Giants had interest in him as a free agent.

OG Adam Gettis: 6'2, 305 pounds. 25 years old. 5th round draft pick of the Redskins in 2012. I liked him coming out of Iowa and even started a few games for the Redskins. May have fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff. Is more of a technician.

OG Dylan Gandy: 6'3", 295 pounds. 32 years old. Career back-up. 4th round pick of the Colts. Has stayed in the league by being an effort player. One of the weakest options on this list.

OG Julian Vandervelde: 6'2", 300 pounds. 26 years old. Drafted in the 5th round by the Eagles in 2011 and spent time with the Buccaneers before returning to the Eagles. Played tackle at Iowa, but primarily guard in the NFL. Was asked to play center and couldn't make the transition.

OT Michael Bamiro: 6'8", 340 pounds. 23 years old. An athletic freak with huge size. Very raw and needs refinement. After missing the draft, he chose to sign with the Eagles over the Giants. Played mostly tackle at Stony Brook. Has talent and might be best on the practice squad.

OC Gabe Ikard: 6'4", 304 pounds. 23 years old. Was a middle round prospect as a center, but went undrafted. Signed by the Titans. I liked him a bit coming out of Oklahoma and was surprised that he wasn't drafted. Very smart player. Played primarily center and not sure if he would be able to transition to guard or not. Practice squad/developmental player.

OC Tyler Larsen: 6'4", 313 pounds. 23 years old. Very similar to Ikard. Was a middle round prospect as a center, but went undrafted. Signed by the Dolphins. Again, Played primarily center and not sure if he would be able to transition to guard or not. Practice squad/developmental player.
They liked Caldwell in the draft too

I don't know how they view Jerry right now, but he slipped to the 3rd team versus the Jets. I'm interested to see what other OTs hit the pile.
Good post

The Giants often pretty active in culling through options that are not glorious but may prove to be serviceable, especially at OL, DT, and CB. There will be some guys out there who can play a little bit and just didn't get their chance for whatever reason.

At this point we're just looking for guys who can do a professional job.
Great

post. Excellent. Caldwell maybe, but why would he have been let go, let alone in the first round of cuts, if he could play?
We aren't going to pick anyone up unless
SGMen : 8/26/2014 7:33 pm : link
it is someone too good to pass up.

If someone has a "bubble" OT (54th man) maybe we try to trade a conditional pick much like we did with the Broncos and K McManus. A waived guy has 31 other teams to look at so no guarantee we even get a sniff.

At the end of the day, I think we start the season as follows:

Beatty-Richburg-Walton-Jerry-Pugh. It won't be pretty but they spent the off-season with us so we just have to hope we can at least run with this group and throw short
I watched Tyler Larsen

during several Utah State games and was not impressed
Unless they really like someone

Or are willing to waive one of the injured guys, I don't think they have enough time to grab someone before the next game since so much OL is hurt.
ol cuts
hankb1126 : 8/26/2014 7:55 pm : link
i am not to interested in cuts to 75 next weeks cuts i think are different and may show some interest in ol. te etc

if a player is waived now also means no one had much interest in him
McGlynn is not bad, versatile at Guard and Center.
Jimmy Googs : 8/26/2014 8:18 pm : link
And is familiar with NFC East players so he's got that going for him...

which is nice.
I would imagine finding a guy in this round of cuts who would provide
BlueHurricane : 8/26/2014 8:19 pm : link
Any improvement would be tough. Next round though it should be a pretty simple task given our depth.
I think we need to look at things like who was a captain,
81_Great_Dane : 8/26/2014 8:30 pm : link
especially with the rookies. Given the Giants' current emphasis on high-character guys, they're unlikely to pick up a rookie camp cut for their 53-man roster unless he's a former team captain or something like that.
I liked a lot of these guys..
PeterS : 8/26/2014 8:54 pm : link
Caldwell was very highly regarded. McGlynn not so much but he's had injury issues. Vandervelde was injured and waived as he would be out for 6 weeks. Gettis at 305 might be too big, he played his college ball at 285. Gandy - no clue. Kid from Stoneybrook certainly has the size to make a practice squad. Larsen, who I wanted to see in Blue looks to have been overrated.
Colt Lyerla injured/waived
SHO'NUFF : 8/26/2014 10:38 pm : link
could be available for us in Week 8 or so.

Isn't he a guy with a lot of issues? I don't think the Giants wanted to touch him in the draft
we had

Gandy for try out
KC's already picked up McGlynn
jeff57 : 8/27/2014 12:45 pm : link
.
Lucas Nix is also one to consider

Think about the size of some of these guys

compare to the Giants linemen.

If Schwartz comes back at LG and Jerry wins the starting RG spot, the Giants may be the only team in the league with starting guards that outweigh both of their starting tackles.
Excellent post. Great info
mfsd : 8/27/2014 4:37 pm : link
and meanwhile ESPN is busy covering Michael Sam's shower habits
schwartz isn't coming back to left guard
fame56 : 8/27/2014 6:53 pm : link
richburg is there now and will be there or at center for the next 10 years or so

Schwartz will come back to right guard where he should have been from the beginning, or maybe right tackle if beatty cant perform and pugh moves to the left tackle spot

or mosley goes to right tackle and Schwartz to right guard

or someone gets picked up next week after final cuts

or I don't know shit and am just a fan taking wild guesses
