NFT: Knee Defender

natefit : 8/26/2014 7:54 pm
We all know how annoying it is when the person in front of you reclines all the way back especially in coach. But this guy actually went out and bought a solution ahead of time...
Link - ( New Window )
unfortunately for him the device
WeatherMan : 8/26/2014 8:16 pm : link
is banned by all the major US airlines, and as a result of the flight having to divert he may face a hefty fine.
98% of the time I don't recline my seat
J Merkin : 8/26/2014 10:25 pm : link
As a courtesy to others. But if I needed to for some reason and there was one of these on my seat, my fist would be through the guys laptop if not his head if he refused to remove it. You pay for a seat and you have the right to recline. If the person behind it doesnt like the possibility of having the seat inclined in front of them, then buy a first class ticket or a bulkhead or exit row seat.

Again, I get PO'ed as many do when the person in flight of my reclines all the way, especially if they do it quickly and unexpectedly. But nonetheless, they have a right to do so and the guy behind has no right to try and stop them.

A simpler solution is to ask nicely.

and see rude behavior often. Keeping a seat from reclining is the epitome of it. Blame the airlines for the miniscule space they provide, not the person who wants to recline. Personally, I don't put the seat back, but I'm average size and have short legs.

I read an article a day before the knee defender story came out that bemoaned the "me first" traveler. The one that is aggressive towards anyone who threatens their space and thinks that their travel woes are more important than everyone else's. They cut lines to talk to gate agents, they disrupt the boarding process by trying to board before their zone, they get up from the rear of the airline and push theor way forward upon landing. I see these people often. Just yesterday in Dulles, I had my phone charging for a conference call I had in 30 minutes and a woman comes up, unplugs my phone and plugs hers in.

I said "excuse me" and she said she needed to make a call. I told her that if she asked me I would have just let her use it, but since she didn't, I unplugged the phone and put mine back. Simple politeness diffuses a lot of situations. If somebody asks if they can recline their seat, I'd welcome that as unexpected. Heck, if somebody asks me to do anything like help with their bags or directions, I'm more than willing.
Airports turn people into bigger dicks than they already are.

Seats don't even recline that much anymore.
Section331 : 8/27/2014 8:11 am : link
This is much ado about nothing, a case of someone getting all pissy that another passenger had the audacity to recline her seat a bit.

I'd like to think that this may lead to airlines rethinking their seat layouts, and give passengers a little bit of leg room, but who am I kidding?

This amazes me. I saw it the first time not long ago. The prick just pushed his way to front basically shoving people out of the way. I try to assume innocence, like maybe he was late for a connection, but he didn't even say excuse me.
Can't imagine how pissed I'd be...

Ive always
natefit : 8/27/2014 8:51 am : link
checked the person behind me, then slowly and incrementally put my seat back if I do it at all. I dont find it any more comfortable and actually its less supportive anyway.
The amount that the seats recline is so minscule
NoPeanutz : 8/27/2014 9:04 am : link
and is easily made up by reclining your own seat. So any comfort territory that is lost by a seat "reclining" in front of you can be made up 100% at the push of a button. Pay it back, as they say.
So you sit in row C, and the guy in row A reclines, why does the poor bastard in row B have bad manners for reclining, to reclaim the room he lost from A? Why should he be punished so his neighbors in front and in back can be comfortable? You in C can just recline your own seat too.

Yes, it's a race to the bottom. But as someone said, if you so value your legroom, now you can pay an extra $50 and sit in the exit row.

Many insist that wide people should pay extra to sit on a plane because they need more room. So why not tall people, for the same reason? Makes sense to me.
That being said, there is nothing wrong
NoPeanutz : 8/27/2014 9:07 am : link
with slowly, incrementally, easing your seat back, so as not to exact undue suffering on your neighbor. That's common courtesy.
Nate youre right that it's less supportive, and
NoPeanutz : 8/27/2014 9:09 am : link
not especially more comfortable, but even for short people, when row A is reclined and row B is not, it makes using the tray table uncomfortable, since lap space is severely constrained. Also, it is impossible to sufficiently unforld a laptop in this position.
For this reason, reclining for B might be necessary.
maybe he just should have passed forward the lovely

courtesy card and all would have been understood.

I am fairly tall and get uncomfortable quickly when stuffed into an airline seat, but that's the price I pay for flying coach. This knee defender thing is one of the biggest self-centered asshole devices ever brought to market.
Yeah, I flew pretty much 3x a week for 3 months straight.
kickerpa16 : 8/27/2014 10:53 am : link
It was miserable watching other people.

I've exactly once rushed up to the front when my flight landed; but only because I asked the flight attendant if she could announce if people who had flights soon would be let off first.

Remarkably, most people were very civil during that.

Most of the other times, I wanted to donkey punch someone.
I was heading up to Rochester..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/27/2014 11:04 am : link
last week and I actually had a passenger remove my bag from the overhead so he could put his up there and then offer it to the flight attendant to be checked.

What pissed me off most is that it was my computer bag (and my only carry-on). The guy was pissed it wasn't under my seat so he could fit his over-sized stuffed to the gills roller bag.

That was a first for me.

And if I'm in coach I have ZERO qualms about seat reclining. So you are tall, I should be uncomfortable because of that?

Do tall people duck if they are standing in front of me at a concert so I can see better?

kicker..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/27/2014 11:44 am : link
If I'm not upgraded, I'm able to board just after first class.

The guy who did this was probably Zone 4 which pissed me off even more. Did he think there'd be room for a gigantic roller bag and think it was perfectly fine to offer up somebody else's bag to be checked?

Usually, I just see other stuff happen to other people. I've seen a guy not get up from his aisle seat to let a person by him because he "didn't feel like it". I've seen a parent not stop their kid from throwing food, so he did it about 4 more times before an attendant finally had to say something. I've seen the usual arguments about electronic use, which has thankfully stopped now that you can keep them on.

In a way, I'm a "me first" traveler in that I like to pop my headphones in and not make any contact with the person next to me, but i think that is more just being anti-social than it is putting my priorities in front of others. I don't hover in front of the gate until my seating area is called. I don't bring several carry on's in and expect to stow all of them. I just keep to myself.
I fly a great deal

and yes, planes are a great spectacle of humans being trapped in their own basest level personalities. I am tallish (6'2") and really don't have any qualms about seat reclining unless I'm trying to work during a flight (but that's my choice, not the person's in front of me). The knee defender is really a prick move though. The funny thing is that this was economy plus (I fly United mostly) and there is plenty of comfortable legroom for a person my size there - even with the seat reclined.

I agree with Fatman in that its carry on luggage that turns people into absolute fuckers to deal with. I deliberately travel with only a laptop so that I have legroom. I usually get to preboard (one of the minor perks of flying a great deal) and have idiots tell me to put my overhead stowed computer bag (my only bag) under my seat so they can put their large carry on above as well as their "other bag". I kindly tell them that their problem falls into my favorite category of problems, not my fucking problem. Pack lighter next time or purchase the preboarding.
I fly Delta exclusively
B in ALB : 8/27/2014 11:54 am : link
because of my status with them. If i don't get upgraded i'm always sure to pick an exit row with plenty of legroom. If you fly enough you're surfing SeatGuru based on specific equipment and eliminating some problems mentioned here. Boarding early is always a plus becuase i only travel with a carry on and roller as long as my trip is less than six days. Anything longer and i have to check. Again though - free with Delta.

It's the personal space problems that drive me nuts. The other day i was sitting next to a guy and his girlfriend - i'm in C - they're in A and B - and they start arguing loudly. Meanwhile, a woman got in the plane and started screaming at one of the flight attendants because her bag wouldn't fit. Her husband had to physically restrain her and i suspect he gave her a xanax or something because she didn't make a sound until the plane landed and she was literally climbing over seats to get out of the plane.

Back to the guy sitting next to me. He starts chewing his fingernails and spitting them all over the floor and seatback in front of him. Once he chewed his nails to the quick he started working on popping the zits on his legs. I'm usually a pretty tolerant guy and understand people are batshit crazy. But this was a first for me.

And there's always someone bringing on some sort of nasty fast food or fish or homemade foulness that stinks up the cabin. They couldn't be bothered to eat that shit in the terminal. It had to be eaten inside a metal tube with 200 other passengers resembling 10 pounds of shit in an eight pound bag.
Knee defender courtesy card--two things
manh george : 8/27/2014 11:56 am : link
The owner of the card is saying:

"1) I am fucking you in a way that is against airline rules in order to make myself more comfortable and you less comfortable. Please accept my boorish, obnoxious behavior because, hey, at least I described it politely on this nice little card.

2) Instead of being pissed at me, you should be pissed at the laws of supply and demand which determine how much room airlines are going to allot per seat. Maybe if we all complain a whole lot--but keep buying tickets--the airlines will increase space per seat and accept lower profits. One way or the other, pretending that the airlines are going to change this if only we all complain permits me to pretend that it's OK to break airline rules and make you less comfortable. "

OlyWAJintsFan : 8/27/2014 1:54 pm : link
food can be pretty bad. I recently finished a job early and flew back standby, get the last seat on the plane, and its between two 400+ lb sisters. As if being in the sweaty mumu-lined flesh pocket between the two of them was not enough, they start passing a costco sized package of double stuffed oreos between them like I'm not even there. Crumbs flying, those two polished off that sucker in no time. Sure enough, we hit turbulence somewhere over Oregon and they get airsick. I can feel the wretches as they work their up through the the fat roll cocoon I'm trapped in. Two bags each. I guess I was just lucky that they weren't playing "hide the cookie."

This thread makes me look forward to the 6 hour flight home tomorrow.

I thought your first tale of the woman unplugging your phone was bad. But, how in the Hell does someone try to get away with taking another passenger's bag out of the overhead and requesting it be checked. The attendant should squash that one right away.

was easily handled. I told the guy that was my bag and he needed to put it back. When he said it was only a laptop, i pretty much said what somebody said above - "It is my only bag. you can check yours for free". The flight attendant was right there and was telling him the same thing.

Actually, at 6'8" I always scoot down in my seat at the movies, check if all is well behind me when I go to a play, and make sure that I do everything I can to make sure I don't ruin anyone's experience because I'm so tall.

At Giants games, when I rise during a critical moment I never stand fully erect because I'm considerate.

And when I find myself in an airplane seat with my knees jammed into the seat in front of me I always ask the person in front of me to please refrain from reclining. Usually the stewardess fins me another seat or the person in front agrees.

So much for your position.
