I'm getting ready for vacation in Greece this Saturday, my first trip to Europe. Will mainly be on the islands (Mykonos and Santorini) so if anyone has any tips or recommendations on food/activities it would be appreciated.
Also, do you recommend changing out cash for Euros at my bank here, or get it through ATM's there? I've heard either is fine but nothing definitive as being the better option.
Super excited for the trip, probably the last big one for a while so I need to make it count.
Consider a catamaran around the island and into the old volcano hotsprings. You'll see alot by simply walking the island, but the boat gives you another unbelievable perspective.
Any particular ones you recommend?
Mykonos - I would check out Little Italy for happy hour/sunset and highly recommend Nammos/Psarou beach during the day.
If you don't have a car, rent an ATV to get around.
Would take out some cash before you leave but as you said not a necessity. FX rate was fair when using your credit cards.
Be aware the islands are pricey but an amazing trip. Have a great time.
Santorini:
+1 on catamaran - it was the best thing we did there. We did the day trip, not the sunset. Don't wear a light colored bathing suit if you plan to swim in the hot springs.
- do a wine tour, i believe there are two major ones, go with the higher rated one from tripadvisor. If you do the day time tour they also stop at the brewery.
- the Gaia winery is right near the black sand beach and not far from the brewery if you didn't want to do the tour. That was our favorite
- We ate at Ambrosia in Oia - which had a terrace view of the caldera. It's expensive, but good. You need reservations.
Mykonos:
- We didn't do anything organized since it's more of a bar/restaurant scene - but i can recommend some good restaurants:
- M-Eating (make reservations)
- Bakalo (make reservations)
- We hung around at St. Stephanos beach which was quiet and we enjoyed it. We didn't go to Paradise or Super Paradise, a little crazy for us.
In Mykonos there are tons of ATMs in the main town, same with Fira in Santorini. However there's not many in Oia. I hope you're prepared to spend, both islands are expensive!
Unfortunately my wife wasn't warned of this by our hotel, who booked the tour for us..
There was also a blond on the boat with us who's hair turned orange. It also took me like 3 washes to get the mud out of my beard, even after swimming all day.
If you do a google image search you'll see that the water turns completely brown near the rocks.
Totally worth doing, but good to know about ahead of time.
