Josh Gordon suspended for one year, according to Schefter

Schefter þ@AdamSchefter ·1m

Browns WR Josh Gordon has been suspended one year, per league source.
Ugh. took a flyer on him in both leagues.

He would still need to comply with the NFL drug policy if suspended. If he was banned, he would need to re-apply to the NFL after a year. I think the policy assumes that he would re-apply so he would still be under the drug policy.

Problem is, he can't smoke weed as I think he's still tested per the CBA.

This is at least his 3rd time failing a drug test (mandated by the CBA). I bet Rice gets more than a year long suspension after the 3rd time he beats his GF/wife.

Problem with that is, how do you catch him beating his wife three times? Only reason he got caught was it was on camera. Can't test the blood for being a low life piece of shit. Unfortunately.

Sure, penalties escalate with repeat offenses so it's not a perfect comparison. That said, even multiple offenses of recreational drug abuse seem like a less serious offense than assualting a woman.

Am I ok with him beating his wife (or anyone for that matter)? Absolutely not and I find it absurd that he didn't serve time. But there's only so much the NFL (read: Goodell) can do under the CBA.

The drug suspensions on the other hand, are very well defined.
Should be another banner year

Fair,
G.O.B. : 8/27/2014 1:09 pm : link
so make the argument that the CBA is f*cked up rather than saying that he'll be suspended more than a year if he beats up his fiance for the third time.

In 20 years people will be looking back at this in shear disbelief

and from what I understand, gordons sample contained traces of marijuana that were so slight that he wouldnt have failed an olympic test, but the nfl has an absurdly strict threshold. With that in mind its almost even possible that the 2nd hand smoke excuse (which just triggers an auto bullshit response 99.9999999 percent of the time from all of us, rightfully so) might actually be true

and then of course we get back to ray rice

I love this game, I hate this league, just another example why. I didnt renew my sunday ticket this year, and im not going to act like this sentiment was the driving force why. But I kinda feel good about the fact that they wont be getting my money

Fact is here you're equating smoking weed to beating your girlfriend/wife. That's where the NFL has its problem.

This kid is so damn good, he actually has better numbers than Calvin Johnson last year. He had Campbell & Weeden throwing to him.

Imagine if he had a good QB? He's really gone and f'ed things up for himself. A year suspension is far, far too long, IMO.

I agree 100%. It's clear to me that Goodell is cracking down hard on this so that next time the CBA is being negotiated he can back down on this and act like he "gave" the players something to get a concession elsewhere from them. It's transparent and sad.
I don't think it's as much a matter if the harm is there or not anymor
Bill L : 8/27/2014 1:24 pm : link
at this point it's simply a matter of knowing what the rule is and having the character or discipline, or whatever to follow it. It's not rocket science; it's choosing between an act that should be as inconsequential to the player as many think it is wrt to harm, and having a job.

You can think Josh Gordon is an idiot for putting himself in this position and also think the NFL, as a multi-billion dollar enterprise, is being absurd for taking this stance.

??? the Players Union was one the main factor in pushing this policy in the late 80s and early 90s. Some take substance abuse as a serious health risk.

I'd be interested in seeing a link that shows that the players union was a main factor in pushing forth the NFL's marijuana policy.
It's a rule

not sure what proportion and context you mean. Is out out of proportion to suspend someone for this many games for this number offense if the rule says you get suspended for this many games for this number offense?

Proportion is that Ray Rice is getting 1/8th the suspension for an act that I'm sure both of us consider worse. Context is that the test was so borderline (and one of his samples was below the threshold) that it seems absurd to suspend for a full year in this instance. The NFL's seems to only adhere to "rules" when it's convenient to them (e.g., see the obvious collusion during the uncapped year).

Word out of Barea (Browns camp) is that Austin may be their "WR1" but Andrew Hawkins will be perhaps the only consistent receiver on the squad, out of the slot.

I think you're underestimating the marketing angle. The NFL is very nervous about suburban moms getting convinced that football is a less-than-wholesome pastime and discouraging Junior from watching or playing it. Hence Play 60, breast cancer charities, penalizing end-zone celebrations, opposing expansions in legal sports betting, and, yes, testing for and issuing suspensions for recreational drug use.

Makes zero sense in light of the Ray Rice situation. There's a guy that could have been lit up by the NFL and everybody would have been behind them.

MarshallOnMontana : 8/27/2014 5:46 pm : link
Is nuts. Compare it to the olympics, the nfl has a much lower threshold to test positive for weed, and a much higher threshold for peds. Doesnt the nfl allow you to have like 4x the amount of testosterone in your system as the average male? Yet the threshold for weed is so low that the nfl fails you for a miniscule level that wouldnt meet the threshold in other sports. If gordon was an olympian he passes
