NGT - Washington Redskins seeking to build new stadium

BigBlueinChicago : 8/27/2014 7:37 pm
FedEx Field, home to the Washington football team for ONLY the last 17 years, may already be headed into its final years if Owner Dan Snyder can pull it off.

Quote:
“Whether it's Washington, D.C., whether it's another stadium in Maryland, whether it's a stadium in Virginia, we've started the process,” Snyder said

The process appears to have one goal in mind...hosting a Super Bowl.

Quote:
“I'd like to see it sooner than later, but we love FedEx Field,” he said. “It's a great place to feature our home games, but it's 17 years old now. I think it's time for us to start looking and we're doing it.

Snyder: Redskins have "started the process" of planning new stadium - ( New Window )
Why not,
Big Blue '56 : 8/27/2014 7:39 pm : link
FedEx field hasn't experienced too many playoff wins
Preliminary drawing:

Snyder wants to call it "The Burial Ground."

At least until he fetches enough wampum to sell the naming rights.

Snyder go full heel and name it "Redskins Reservation" or some shit like that.

I built one of those out of popsicle sticks in the 5th grade. lol

I should submit a bid.
17 years?

Insanity.
why bother concentrating on getting
B in ALB : 8/27/2014 8:11 pm : link
a better product on the field. Much more important to build a new stadium and have other teams play a game in it.

Fuckin Danny World aka 6 Flags Stadium. Naming rights my balls.
I hope Snyder is willing to front all the costs
dpinzow : 8/27/2014 8:12 pm : link
because the political mood in the region is against any form of tax increase to fund a new stadium (since Nationals Park and FedEx were extremely expensive to begin with)

Don't forget to include an on-site casino.

How insane. Did taxpayers foot the bill for FedEx?

Correct me if I am wrong on this...if you buy a PSL (which I believe Washington did when they built FedEx), it only lasts as long as the stadium is there. Once the games aren't played there, you are SOL. Do I have that right?

Point I'm asking is this - By building another stadium, they can go out and charge fans for another PSL and rake in a second dose of money from that scam.

I thin that may be what is behind this new stadium stuff.
RVA?
mattlawson : 8/27/2014 8:36 pm : link
Perhaps? Would be awesome. This town needs a new stadium of some kind....
Do current season ticketholders

have those PSLs or was it built too long ago. If Danny hasn't collected (extorted) PSL $ that other owners have cleaned up on, this may be a good reason.

I'd bet his Redskin PSLs would be the most expensive out there.
$70.5 million
B in ALB : 8/27/2014 8:42 pm : link
Came from the public as what they deemed an "infrastructure improvement". Meanwhile Snyder's a fucking billionaire.

That said, comparitively it's on the very low end for public funding with 72% coming from the private sector.
He can forget about
lugnut : 8/27/2014 8:44 pm : link
hosting a Super Bowl until he changes the Redskins name. NFL would never allow it. And he can forget about Skins playing in a SB, ever.
I was at FedEx

a few years ago and it's perfectly fine. This is all about getting public subsidies, jacking up ticket prices, etc. He's a bizman through and through, just an idiot when it comes to forming a winning football team.

I went to Giants Stadium in 2005 and thought it was in good shape. Maybe just a face lift. But no....they needed a bunch of club seats and PSLs.
Washington doesnt have PSLs
daBBWC : 8/27/2014 9:28 pm : link
I think there's only one or two other teams that don't have PSLs.
please let it be called....

The TeePee
i would almost bet

Washington Does Have PSL's

Just spoke to my friend who has four tickets and he paid four psl's. The stadium is a dump. Always was. Ravens stadium opened a year later and is spectacular. Fedex is a joke

And goes to a good many skins games. According to him, that team is disproportionately dependent upon "corporate" butts in seats, than those of average fans. In other words, just another reason that Snyder probably doesn't give a rip about pissing off anyone with a PSL. He knows he will fill the stadium through corporate ticket packages, skyboxes, etc., without really needing the presence of Joe Hogs fan.

we need a "Danny's World" along the lines of the outstanding "Jerruh's World".

greed. It's incomprehensible. If there is any call for public funding for the stadium, citizens should protest en masse (I can't advocate for riots).
well the good news in this
giantfanboy : 8/28/2014 8:14 am : link
the good news is that the redskin name will be changing sooner than later

because there is no way any state or financial institution will be involved in a new stadium unless redskins get a new name.
will they call it "The Teepee"?

how about The Reservation?
I wonder if we're going to see a change
Go Terps : 8/28/2014 10:03 am : link
in the way the stadium concept is approached in the NFL when you consider that the home viewing experience has, for many, surpassed the stadium experience. Maybe we'll see more temporary, modular-type structures (Qatar is proposing a partially modular stadium for the 2022 World Cup) that can allow franchises to more easily change locations within a given metro area, offer different amenities, etc.

That's basically what's happening here, right? By twice changing stadiums in a quarter century Snyder is looking to get two really big bites at the apple.

We're a long way from the Romans designing and building the Colosseum to still partially stand 2,000 years later.

I really wonder if that's Snyder's plan. Go to the powers that be and say, "if we change our name, will you give us a new stadium?" Trying to extort the most coin for something that is basically inevitable would be a very Snyder thing to do.
Maybe the Jets can still get their own stadium
Giants2012 : 8/28/2014 10:29 am : link
and the Mara's can spend a bit to change all the seats to blue at Metlife.
Doesn't his lease run until 2017?

That possibly could be plan at work. It is a very shrewd move business wise.

You get a new stadium, the new revenue that comes with it.

You get to host a Super Bowl and the revenue that comes from it.

With a new name comes the new revenue that comes with the new merchandise sales.

All of that in exchange for changing the name.

Think all the fans who paid for PSL will pay again?
djstat, I don't pay PSL's
daBBWC : 8/29/2014 12:04 pm : link
I have seson tickets to the Skins (go the Giants game for every year and try to make my money back off the other games). Got them 10 years ago and I don't pay PSLs. Maybe Snyder charges newer ticket holders or there's a PSL fee for transferring tickets.
