Housekeeping: Deke and Anderson clear waivers; added to IR

Defenderdawg : 8/27/2014 8:01 pm
@RVacchianoNYDN: LB Justin Anderson and DE Emmanuel Dieke cleared waivers (wavied/injured on Tuesday) and were added to the Giants' Injured Reserve list.
Nice to see both clear

And essentially stashed on IR for the year. I didn't think either had the type of serious injury to be out for the year. But both showed some potential to be future backups in this league or PS players next year.
not neccessarily...

in a process that I still don't fully understand, when a player is waived/injured...he will go to IR...and then later he usually (if not always) waived from IR.
Anderson had a nice career at Louisiana-Lafayette.

He was extremely productive, and he put up good numbers at his Pro Day (4.68 40, 37-inch vertical, 6.89 3-cone). I hope we see him in blue in the future.

4.68 is relatively average to slow for a LB, isn't it?
Jon Beason ran a 4.72.

...
Best explanation I have found
Defenderdawg : 8/27/2014 8:59 pm : link
"1. Players with less than four years of service time are “waived” and are subject to waivers. The waiver period in the NFL is 24 hours. So, a player waived on Tuesday can be claimed by another team by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. If multiple teams place a waiver claim on the same player, the player is awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority (the reverse order of the standings, worst to first). If a player goes unclaimed, he clears waivers and is a free agent, free to sign wherever he can find work.
2. Players with 4+ seasons of service time are “released.” These players, known as “vested veterans,” do not pass through waivers and are free agents immediately, free to sign with any other team.
These rules apply until the trade deadline (presently the Tuesday after Week 8 of the NFL season). After the trade deadline (until the start of the next league year in March), all players – whether a vested veteran or a non-vested veteran – are subject to the waiver process.
3. Injured players with 4+ seasons of service time can be immediately placed on Injured Reserve (IR).

****

4. Up until the first cutdown date, injured players with less than four years of service cannot go onto IR until they pass through waivers. Those players are released with the “waived/injured” designation. Known as “injury waivers,” this process exposes the player to waivers, but warns other teams that the player is injured. If the player clears injury waivers, the team can then either place the player on IR or agree to an injury settlement (paying the player for the weeks that he is expected to be recovering from his injury) and then release the player.
It is important to keep in mind that injury waivers only apply during the offseason, up until the first cutdown date. So, as of the first cutdown date, a player with less than four years of service time can be placed directly on IR, although some teams will still use the “waived-injured” designation, hoping that another team will claim the player, thereby relieving them of the financial responsibility for a player on IR."

Thanks.

But what usually happens is a few days after the injured/waived player is placed on IR, he is waived from IR.

The only thing I can of is that IR situation is only temporary until the injury settlement.

But it seems awfully convoluted to me.

truly injured players of all experience levels can be placed directly on IR, right?

For example, Marcus Harris and Cooper Taylor were placed directly on IR.

So this other step never really made much sense to me.

I believe that players that go directly to IR get paid for the entire year. Those that pass through injury waivers can be released as soon as they've recovered from the injury.
Is there a limit to how many players you can place on IR
Blue Blood : 8/27/2014 9:39 pm : link
because I could see that becoming the place to " stash " players.. they cant work out or practice with the team but they can attend meetings if I remember correctly..
I think the less than 4 years only applies prior to first cutdown

After that they can go on IR or injured waivers and then IR

I agree with Eric the IR is temporary until a settlement can be worked out in some cases.

This is the process for injury settlement
Defenderdawg : 8/27/2014 9:48 pm : link
The second opinion might be the delay that puts them on IR temporarily:

"Injury settlement: Instead of putting the waived/injured player on the IR for the rest of the season a team will negotiate an injury settlement if the player has a chance of returning from the injury in that season. Once a settlement is reached that player is released and free to pursue another team. The amount of the settlement is based upon the number of weeks the player is “estimated” to be unable to play. This comes in the form of a team doctor’s opinion and a second opinion doctor of the player. For example if a player is estimated by the team doctor to be out 5 weeks but the second opinion doctor believes it could take up to 8 weeks, the agent will seek to have the player paid for as close to the 8 weeks as possible, 8/17th’s of his total year’s salary."

4.68 would have been a top ten time for LB at the combine. But something WAY more important at the LB position is the 3-cone time of 6.89. That is an amazing 3-cone time, faster than all but three LB timed at the 2014 combine, and a good bit faster than Khalil Mack's 7.08.

For reference on that time, OBJ had the sixth best time of the WR at 6.69 and the explosive "rabbit and bird catching" David Wilson had a 7.09 time.

Those are some very athletic numbers - super-elite? Perhaps not, but they show some serious athleticism at the position.
For example Packers rookie FA Colt Lyerla
Defenderdawg : 8/27/2014 10:16 pm : link
He was injured prior to the first cutdown, had to pass through waivers to go on IR, the Packers initially were to pay him for the whole season:

August 20

"Green Bay - Tight end Colt Lyerla cleared NFL waivers Wednesday afternoon and landed on the Green Bay Packers' injured reserve list.

An executive in personnel for another NFL team said he expected Lyerla to remain on IR for the entire season and then be back with the Packers in 2015. He has two years left on his free-agent contract.

"I think he's probably right where they want him," the personnel man said.

Lyerla, a rookie who played 2 1/2 seasons for Oregon before quitting the team in early October, would be paid his $303,000 base salary for being on IR. His base salary for making the team would have been $420,000.

According to NFL rules, Lyerla wouldn't be able to practice all season."

Then on August 28 the Packers reached an injury settlement and waived him off IR:

"GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers reached an injury settlement with rookie tight end Colt Lyerla on Tuesday and waived him off injured reserve.

The settlement will pay Lyerla through Week 8 of the regular season, his agent Vinnie Porter said, and also allows him the opportunity to return to the NFL this season. Had he spent the entire year on injured reserve, he would have had no chance to play until 2015 but would have been able to attend meetings and other functions with the Packers.

Now, the Packers cannot bring him back until after Week 14 because NFL rules state a player who reaches an injury settlement can't return to his old team until six weeks after the settlement expires. Any other team could sign him to the roster or practice squad after Week 8.

"They said they didn't think injured reserve and sitting out a whole other year would be the best thing for him," Porter said. "This allows them to bring him back later this year. It also allows other teams to do the same, but they're willing to take the risk."

IR is indeed temporary until a lot of these cases are worked out with
Optimus-NY : 8/28/2014 6:00 am : link
the agents and the team so that the player can get a shot elsewhere as soon as he heals. At that point, an injury settlement is reached. Last year there was a player on the NYG who that never happened for, even though it was assumed that it would. It was the WR who got injured in the PITT game in PITT last preseason (his name escapes me at the moment).

I think the Giants finally relinquished his rights for good last month.
