Very Concerned about the WR position to start the season

Hades07 : 8/28/2014 10:17 am
By the end of the season our top 3 WRs should be Cruz, Randle and Beckham. But to start who is the 3rd? Beckham is unlikely to be up to speed by then. Parker is versatile but hasn't stood out at WR. Washington has shown promise but is very inexperienced. None of Jernigan, Holliday and Manningham have earned a spot on the team with their play but one of them will likely make the team.
Jernigan

I would guess you are right. But does this mean JJ goes outside and Cruz to the slot? If not, it is kind of a double whammy-a receiver who is, at best, unproven and our most reliable weapon unable to play in his ideal spot.....
Geez..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/28/2014 10:21 am : link
it seems like every day we get a thread where somebody says they are concerned at position X.

Ironically, LB isn't one that's mentioned!

OL, TE, WR, QB, K - It is a shitfest of moronic thinking around here.

While his role is typically playing the slot

it figures to be Jernigan to get first crack. They're going to mix and match looks until ODB gets healthy, or one of the youngsters forces his way into playing time.
I expect Parker to get a look at split end
JonC : 8/28/2014 10:30 am : link
he's made some plays in the preseason and doing more than returning punts would solidify his roster spot.
you say washington is inexperienced
blakjedi : 8/28/2014 10:32 am : link
but he has played alot more than beckham.

but Beckham should be the 3?

I dont disagree with the conclusion (we drafter Beckham to be just that the 3) but HOW did you get there with that logic?
I guess it will be X WR
deadkurtrulz : 8/28/2014 10:34 am : link
by committee . Giants will probably rotate WR's until someone steps up and makes a few plays. Beckham's next full practice will be his first. He has not even been hit once as a pro yet. Hard to imagine he will be playing any time soon and when he does it will not be full time.

If OL can keep Eli alive and Jennings/Williams provide a running game Giants should be OK.

Without a doubt the opening day lineup will be Cruz, Randle and Jernigan. I believe you sit Odell Beckham until that hammy is 100%. He has already missed all the off-season drills so missing a game is a better idea than pushing and losing him for the season.
I thought Beckham was drafted ...
PonderingObserver : 8/28/2014 10:38 am : link
to be a 1.
If washington has a big game tonight
ANGPASS : 8/28/2014 10:38 am : link
About 4-5 catches 80 plus yards and a TD. he should be the 3. That shows consistency over 5 games with limited time, that he can make plays. I think puttin him on the outside with randle and cruz in the slot would be ideal. Also, cruz was thrown in the fire in 2011 in game one. tho he dropped a pass he lit it up in game 3 on. and he has no experience except ONE great game. Washingotn has produced in the biggest part of the game and coming up clutch. game in and game out. he earn the 3rd spot.

Also, if he lights it up, beckham and randle can be in a battle for 4th wr if randle isn't a big factor.
Washington is raw
JonC : 8/28/2014 10:39 am : link
He's made plays a plenty this camp, but he's still going through the process and hasn't played against 1's yet either. He's also probably the #6 WR on the roster overall, let's keep that in mind.

Can't really compare him to a premium first round WR, their pedigrees don't match.

Agree with Jon. I would think they might actually bump Cruz outside and put Jernigan in the slot though. I wouldn't mind seeing Washington get some reps with the ones tonight and see how he does as well.

J5, Cruz will definitely get reps outside while ODB is down.
I believe

its time to find-out more about Washington. Let him play against the the one and two's. It's the last preseason game the guy has earned the right to show what he can do. Just give him the chance
Randle
dorgan : 8/28/2014 10:53 am : link
is the player that needs to step up. He's going to play the X and he needs to be a threat or the entire pass offense will be less effective.
Jernigan at slot or z is not ideal, but not a disaster if Randle draws coverage.
Funny how so many seem frightened
Randy in CT : 8/28/2014 10:55 am : link
by uncertainty. This is an opportunity for several guys to step up. And most likely, OBJ will be on the field for the opener.
I'd like to see Washington play the first half tonight.
Tim in Eternal Blue : 8/28/2014 10:58 am : link
JJ sucks and has shown absolutely nothing except a few flashes in a few years. I wish we would cut him. He hit his ceiling in college.

Washington? Who knows... But I want to see.
Fans get too bogged
AnishPatel : 8/28/2014 10:58 am : link
down about the WR rankings. That's one position in an offense can that be mixed due to many personnel packages. When I did breakdowns I saw Toomer in the slot with Tyree or Moss on the outside. I think even Plax was in the slot once from my breakdowns. So Wrs can be moved around depending on personnel packages.

I wouldn't worry who plays where. I am sure we will see different combinations throughout the season.

Absolutely, it's more about #2 stepping up.
A player who needs to be a big part of the passing game is Jennings
UberAlias : 8/28/2014 11:40 am : link
I'm not expecting any production from the TEs and we don't have the overall talent at WR (presumably) to generate enough offense if we aren't getting anything from our backs either. Not unless the running game picks up significantly.
And with Jennings
UberAlias : 8/28/2014 11:42 am : link
I am hoping he can emerge as a guy who is more than just a check down in the passing game --a guy you have plays designed to get the ball out to him. That alone would be a big step in the right direction.

As I stated I said by the end of the season he should be the 3rd, my question was to start the season. The consensus seems to be that JJ will fill the role at first. Which is what makes me nervous because based on play this preseason, he would have likely been cut in favor of Harris had Harris not gotten injured.

I think Jennings will be a big part of the passing game. I think that's why they signed him in the first place. He may never approach Tiki Barber's "60% of the offense," but he should become a focal point.
what makes WA more of a concern
Simms11 : 8/28/2014 12:49 pm : link
to me is the lack of a bona-fide TE. That would take pressure off the WRS on the short to mid-range routes too.
hate auto correct...
Simms11 : 8/28/2014 12:51 pm : link
WA shold read WR.
Simms,
AnishPatel : 8/28/2014 12:58 pm : link
You can still do some things in terms of routes. Run legal pick plays, and a whole bunch of screens. If Ben M. is creative I am sure that would mean more sets with WRs or when we have a TE out have the TE perhaps delay release after blocking.

You can do some things to try to help assuming the whole corps isn't 100% useless.
Randle, Cruz, Washington.
mattlawson : 8/28/2014 1:13 pm : link
Look out... book that one.
Have you seen the slop we have at TE?
The_Taxman : 8/28/2014 1:14 pm : link
And you're worried about WR? The WR unit is a hall of fame unit compared to TE. I think we will be fine at RB and WR. I also like our starting 5 OL. But the depth at OL scares the shit out of me.
I agree with the Taxman
nicky43 : 8/28/2014 1:37 pm : link
I think we are fine at WR and RB. We need TE and of coarse none of them will be of any use without an upgraded O-line.
run the ball then
DavidinBMNY : 8/28/2014 2:17 pm : link
Agree with concern at WR. But same concern existed last season. If we can run the ball, that will open up the passing game.
