NFT: Army demotes, retires general over handling of sex assault

A two-star Army general faulted for failing to properly investigate sexual assault and other accusations against a colonel on his staff will be retired at one-star rank, the Army announced Wednesday.

The decision by Army Secretary John M. McHugh comes more than a year after Maj. Gen. Michael T. Harrison was suspended from his duties as commander of U.S. Army forces in Japan.

His case has been cited as evidence of why sex-crime victims say they don't trust the military to protect them, despite efforts by senior Pentagon officials, including Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, to make commanders accountable.

Plain and simple.
Some of these punishments are far lighter...

than what some of the lower ranking officers get for similar or even lesser level offenses. The prime example is that asshole Sinclair, who was demoted to O-5 and allowed to retire instead of serving time in prison.
What's the practical implications of this punishment?

What is a general's retirement pay?
There's a bit of a disconnect...

when a wide-body can get shoved out the door at 16 or 17 years without so much as if you please but a flag officer convicted of serious misconduct loses a fraction of his retirement pay.

For a one-star with 30 years in around $8K a month, for a two-star around $9K. At least that's what I got from their little computer. At least Sinclair is down to $5800, no doubt food stamps are in his future.

Exactly. I hate the fact that some of these General/Flag level officers are put on a pedestal even when they have clearly done wrong. I would think that the fall would be greater since they've climbed so high, but there seems to be a nice safety net for them.
