On McAdoo's offense

blueblood'11 : 8/29/2014 6:57 am
I know it's only preseason but in keeping the tradition of coordinator bashing ala Gilbride/Kildrive, I give you McAdoo/McAwhoo.

I Can't imagine the offense getting worse and maybe playing in real games that mean something will bring out the best in them.

I also understand it's a new system but wouldn't one think that at some point during the preseason we would start to see a hint of progress. Something. Anything.

The defense looks solid and should keep them in games. But if this what we are to expect from the offense that defense can only hold the dam from breaking so long.

Under Gilbride moving the ball wasn't the problem. It was the plays he called that got him the moniker of Kildrive.

So far under McAdoo if this keeps up we can call him No drive.

I am not sure how much of his offense we have seen
Peter from CT : 8/29/2014 7:11 am : link
it sure looks a lot like the old offense so far

blueblood'11 : 8/29/2014 7:13 am : link
It doesn't even look like that. I watched all the preseason games and it really is hard to understand what they were trying to establish.
Before you judge or offer concern,
Big Blue '56 : 8/29/2014 7:16 am : link
give it at least through the first third of the season..

As TC often says, "here we go!"
Except for the much improved running game
Montreal Man : 8/29/2014 7:17 am : link
which looks mostly due to better h-backs and improved run blocking than any new scheme. Maybe the coaches here can tell us something about that.

I hear you. I have to think that this is going to get better. Well let's say I hope.

I think the thing that Coughlin will do is stick more with the running game until the passing game hopefully improves and let the defense do it's thing to keep the games close.

I really believe the defense will be very formidable and in keepin games close you always have a chance. The defense without a doubt is the stronger of the two units and I think a lot of their success will be determined by how well they play.

Right now this offense is scaring no one. The Lions are probably licking their chops as we speak.

If
CT Charlie : 8/29/2014 7:43 am : link
1) the other teams' big guys push back our big guys,
2) we have only 1 WR who is at least an average NFL-quality receiver, and
3) we don't have a TE who is at least an average NFL TE

how will a scheme make a difference?

I think our line will stabilize and be better than last year's, which means I'd be happy with 8 wins.
but you havent even seen the offense yet
Blue Blood : 8/29/2014 7:44 am : link
thats the whole point.. you dont game plan in the preseason.. and you certainly dont tip your hand and show all the nuances of your new offense..
I don't buy into the theory that
JoefromPa : 8/29/2014 7:48 am : link
because it is a new coordinator we should just expect there to be growing pains. What growing pains did the Eagles experience under Kelly last season, or for that matter have you watched the Vikings at all this preseason.

The Eagles started 1-3 last year, and were 3-5 at midseason.
OP is right
Marty866b : 8/29/2014 8:04 am : link
McAdoo, until proven otherwise is not a proven offensive coordinator and thus far the offense looks worse then ever. Because he comes from a top offensive system doesn't mean he is capable of being a coordinator.
How we looked to this point
Big Blue '56 : 8/29/2014 8:17 am : link
is as meaningless as our 5-0 record

Jesus Christ. No of course he's not proven yet.

Thus far we have played 5 preseason games and our offense was not even fully run or installed. You do realize preseason games are more or less vanilla schemes and packages, right?

Did Spagnuolo look like a proven DC his first few games here?
The OL sucks.
Victor in CT : 8/29/2014 8:33 am : link
Until it doesn't suck don't expect much.
Yes it is a new offense...
Doomster : 8/29/2014 8:46 am : link
And they may run vanilla plays....

But you'd think this first team offense could execute, what they run, a hell of a lot better...

I'm worried that he can't design plays that puts fear in the hearts of opposing team's DCs ...
We'll see once the season starts but as of now ... vanilla looks exciting ...
Let's wait until we see some gameplans and halftime adjustments
BeerFridge : 8/29/2014 8:54 am : link
in games that actually count.
Good points blueblood
nicky43 : 8/29/2014 9:03 am : link
The problem the defense is going to have is our offense going 3 and out too often to rest our defense. By the start of the second half our D will be tired.
How great would
Josh in the City : 8/29/2014 9:04 am : link
it be to see the Giants offense put up 40 points against the Lions next week to shut up all the critics? I know it's highly unlikely but would be pretty awesome.
we haven't seen anything
area junc : 8/29/2014 9:18 am : link
we ran a zillion screens and slants week one, showed nothing week 2, worked on downfield week 3/4 and mixed in some basic roll-outs. zone and power. no-huddle at least half the time. beckham hasn't played.

in other words, the Lions have no freaking clue what our gameplan will look like, week 1, except a solid dose of Jennings.
the one thing that absolutely has to be cleaned up
Peter from CT : 8/29/2014 9:23 am : link
is the pass rush up the middle. If you can't do that, Eli can't step into his throws. This was the problem last year and seemed to be the problem with the first team O last night.
Britt
JoefromPa : 8/29/2014 9:32 am : link
I know the Eagles started 1-3, but as I recall it was more about their defense than their offense.
You can't fairly judge McAdoo to this point, however
steve in ky : 8/29/2014 9:39 am : link
I think if we would have kept Gilbride and had simply improved the OL and given him an improved running game things would have turned around for the offense more quickly than retooling the entire works.
Preseason Offense
stoneman : 8/29/2014 9:47 am : link
A lot more running than a typical WC offense. Not talking about Q3/Q4 running the clock out plays, 1Q/2Q series.
steve, not sure one way or the other,
Big Blue '56 : 8/29/2014 9:54 am : link
but it appears that KG(at wife's repeated urgings) wanted to retire..He went out with two SB titles. Not a bad adios
BB56
steve in ky : 8/29/2014 10:19 am : link
I don't doubt she would have preferred that he retired, but I also don't doubt saying so also makes for a convenient less embarrassing reason for doing so.

I guess we will never truly know if it was his and his idea alone or if he was either pressured to or outright asked to retire. But the way he was called out and embarrassed by Mara at the end of last season I can't help believe that he either was asked to or simply didn't appreciate being publicly embarrassed and that motivated him to say to himself "I am out of here, my wife wants ne to retire anyway and I don't need this at this point in my career (and life)".

I guess my point is there are probably many wives of coaches that would prefer that they retire but I doubt many do solely for that reason when they finally decide to.
Sounds reasonable

I'm not concerned (yet) and here's why...
T-Bone : 8/29/2014 11:17 am : link
as I was telling my wife last night, as long as we can run the ball (which we seem to be able to do VERY well so far), the passing game will come around. I'd be worried if we couldn't run OR pass but that doesn't seem to be the case. From what I've heard and read so far, it appears that the running game is still based on Coughlin's old offense and it's the passing game that's new. So it would make sense that the running game is showing better than the passing game at this point.

I think the offense has shown slow but steady improvement throughout the preseason and I think that those that are already calling for Eli, McAdoo and Coughlin's heads... as well as already coming up with names for them... are going to be eating some good ass crow by October.
We're going to put 30+ pts up on the Lions
PatersonPlank : 8/29/2014 11:21 am : link
and Eli will be throwing passes none of us saw him even attempt in a preseason game. IMO the preseason games were for runing vanilla plays to see which offensive lineman could win 1-on-1 matchups. I think our line of Beatty-Richburg-Walton-Jerry-Pugh will be much improved.
I watched the Packers' entire 3rd preseason game to see what this
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/29/2014 11:22 am : link
offense "should" look like.

- The Packers' running game is a true zone blocking scheme. When they run the ball, the line fires off in unison to one side or the other. I read an article in which McCarthy said they do other stuff, but zone blocking is the basic framework. Even with the Giants' success running the ball this preseason, it doesn't look anything like the Packers' offense.

- The very short pass is a major staple of the offense. It's basically a run in the form of an efficient pass that might possibly get YAC. The Chargers' offense is also similar. One thing I've noticed is if the opponents don't fear the Giants WRs' ability to beat them deep, those short passes won't be open unless they use rubs/picks.

The main issue I come out of this with is if the Giants can't make teams respect them deep AND struggle to get off bump and ru
Oops.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/29/2014 11:24 am : link
If opponents don't respect them deep AND the Giants WRs struggle to get off press coverage, people won't be open on plays intended for short, quick passes and Eli will be standing there with the ball. The empty backfield play last night was an example of that.

Long story short... the Giants need ODB to be good and Randle to be a guy who can make contested catches.

I agree with you. I would add that I think the starting offense has also been running very specific and limited formations and plays to force specific things. I don't think our 2nd and 3rd units have shown so much more simply because they are better than other teams' 2nd and 3rd defenses. I think Painter and Nassib have been running a more balanced and/or varied offense. Once the real games start, I expect to see a better showing and a steady improvement.

whobetta : 8/29/2014 12:58 pm : link
mentioned before, the offense through these 5 games has not seemed much different than our old system.

honestly where is the west coast style we were hoping for?

still long outs, back shoulder throws, no rb swing passes, screens, shallow crosses, quick slants, rubs/picks anything...

we threw like 4 screens in that first preseason game then nothing...

I am very concerned, not that McAdoo isn't a good coordinator, but that this offense has assimilated too much of the Gilbride/(more so)Coughlin schemes.

P.S. I am no expert, but just from a bird eye view of my thoughts.
There has been progress
The Tempest : 8/30/2014 8:20 am : link
Probably not the kind of progress people were expecting. Learning a new offense isn't like turning on a light bulb or simply committing a play to mental memory. I didn't expect the offense to be ready after limited game time in the preseason. It will be a work in progress for the rest of the season.
