Eli was on NFL AM this morning and said they went into the preseason games with the idea to work on the "plays that they needed more work on, against looks that they didn't see enough in practice"
Translation: the Giants purposely were running plays they sucked at to get better. Kind of makes sense in exhibition games.
Cruz has said the same in pretty much every interview the past three weeks.
Hearing Eli say this was very interesting and in my view great news as this the first anybody other than Cruz has brought this "practice the plays we suck at" concept up.
I'm pretty sure no one knows what our offense is going to look like Week 1, we will see a game plan to feature our strengths and Detroit's weaknesses(what a concept!). How some (most)Giants fans/media don't get that is beyond me
The sky is not falling. Relax.
..somewhere in this story?
So I could believe this just because some of the stuff we are running with the Nassib and Painter we weren't running with Eli.

Thank you for the insight and adding something valuable to the thread unlike the idiots above.
Plus I think with this defense we will be grinding out wins in November and December. Like the old days
They are not running their base offense.
That being said, blocking is blocking and making accurate throws is making accurate throws and we haven't seen enough consistency from both.
So if Eli says we were running plays that was the offenses weakness it would make sense considering Eli didn't look comfortable running it. Hence the weakness part of it.
Like I said, I want to see the offense for 3-4 regular season games where Ben M. can talk to the QBs on what to install. That will be telling for us.
No matter the score how is THIS play working out?
Is the TE play one that should stay with that TE?
On a roll out what is everybody doing when the defense does......?
There should be much more of that..... BUT it was the last preseason game and both coaches needed to see more of their 2's, 3's and 4's. So the game was played as an exhibition of the player's capabilities during the game..
That's my take on whats been happening so far during the preseason.
I wish the giants didn't win the preseason games so the wins wouldn't give the fans a false idea of where the team is in actual capabilities.
And hopefully let the fans recognize that the coaches need to see everything from ALL their players
TC didn't seem so relaxed when he spoke.
Quote:
I understand that is his demeanor, but there was zero hint of concerns and he truly did come off sounding like he is ready to go. I don't feel great about what I saw this PS, but I would not be surprised at all if they came out and looked a lot better against Detroit. I am not necessarily predicting it, but I know enough not to set expectations based on PS.
TC didn't seem so relaxed when he spoke.
He definitely wasn't. But it is different for a coach like him. It is in the job description to be concerned.
I also agree with Eric that we are likely to see a lot of passes to Jennings, which we haven't seen a lot of yet. I only wish Williams was better at catching the ball.
He doesn't. And he is never going to look at it like we didn't do well but I'm not worried because we are only practicing different things. He is going to be concerned if the bottom line isn't there, regardless of the circumstances. That's his job.
I wrote a blurb yesterday on Tom's philosophy in pre-season.
He's not aiming for "looking good" in the preseason. He's looking to get his offense in and if that means working on plays that are troublesome regardless of the situation, so be it.
He's more concerned with being prepared for the season than worrying about "looking good".
Personally, I thought he took it too far this year and the starters could have used some confidence bolstering, but he usually knows his team, so I'll shut up about it.
Was the OL trying to look like it couldn't pass protect against 1s as well? If so, Coughlin is one sly cat!
Who knows? There are bound to be growing pains with the new offense AND the patchwork OL.
The passing offense will come around at some point if the OL can protect the QB. The running game with Jennings and Williams looks like it has a chance to be GOOD which could be a saving grace. The TE's are nobodys, but Kevin Boss and Jake Ballard were nobodys at first as well.
Last night, ALL the WRs looked like they are allergic to footballs. Randle looks like he can't grasp his routes in this offense either. Pray Beckham gets well soon. Until he or someone else steps in/up, Cruz is gonna get double covered, and Eli may look lousy whether it's his fault or not.
The best solution early in the season might be some good old Parcells-style, smashmouth, ground-game football. But that too, depends on the OL.
Yeah, I was agreeing with you.
We need at least 2 dependable WRs on the field.
Not saying that they can't get this straightened out and have a decent season, but I've seen nothing encouraging from the passing game thus far. Let's hope it comes together. Fast.
Personally, I thought he took it too far this year and the starters could have used some confidence bolstering,
I felt the exact same way, but I think that may have been part of the idea in giving them some reps last night against Pats backups, and probably why he was so grumpy discussing it afterwards. But I doubt there is confidence lost on Eli, at least. I get the sense he is ready to go.
Also, they are not game planning against these teams in the pre-season. Regardless of whether they are using plays that need more practice or not. They are not designed to play to the opponents weakness. I also agree that the plays Nassib was using do not look like the plays they had Eli running (with exception to that first series or two in the first pre-season game).
I think there is plenty to be optimistic about. The run game looks better, the OL looks only slightly better, TE situation got slightly worse, the WRs core is a wash thus far, the defensive backfield has greatly improved, and the DL has taken a slight step back. I never believed we would be ready prior to the season and expect it take take several games into the season before we start clicking. It will now take Beckum even longer. This is where our defense needs to keep us in it.
I'm loving our defense right now. I can't believe these BS calls will continue into the season and they have all been really bad. Has DRC allowed a reception or even been flagged? DRC, Thurmond, and Bowman were great pickups. They would be a great group of top 3 DBs without considering that Prince is our #2. This all without our defensive leader Beason whom I believe will not miss beat when he returns. The only other thing I want is the old JPP to return but unless he's been holding back, I doubt that will happen.
Maybe Eli already has them down pat and doesn't need to show that in preseason?
In that 3rd preseason the game, there would be more game planning installed and the offense still didn't look good with the exception of the no huddle offense.
Gun shy or uncomfortable? Manning has always had total control of his offense. Now, if we can believe his comments, he is working on things he isn't comfortable with and probably seeing things differently.
Hopefully this is the case of him just not being completely comfortable with what is going on with the offense.
I'm not saying that the Giants go 6-2 this year but the one thing we can say is the Giants get off to good starts. They seem to handle the preseason rather well based on their September and October record. And again, they have never really looked that good in the preseason more often than not because I remember fans and media alike killing this team pretty much every year at this same juncture. Come to think of it, every team looks like shit in preseason. Good plays are usually of the broken play variety and first teamers usually run through the motion. But I digress...
Man I hope this team rumbles to a good record.....
I don't think the Giants will come out of the gates throwing like mad but will rather play "take what the defense gives" style. I can see us running, running and throwing short to our RB, TE Donnell or Fells.
Look for the Giants to hope the defense is solid and gets us turnovers. I do believer JPP, Moore and Kennard will put pressure on the QB. They are our only hope so they better!
This avoidance of being candid with the press and the fans concerns is something that has constantly been a part of the coughlin regime. There's a difference between being short and being candid - seems to meet you I could've said this a month ago and we would've been like 'oh okay' instead of the skies falling.
