Finally, my long personal nightmare is over. Painter is cut.

I have us going with 3 RBs with Gaskins or Cox on the PS. I prefer Cox. But if we get to the 4th RB, chances are we are (1) screwed and (2) signing a Hillis type off the street anyway.

I finally had moved on from keeping 2 FBs as I didn't think Connor had a good preseason. I saw him miss a bunch of blocks. And then Hynoski got hurt. And there was that one play where they went with the 2 FBs in front of the RB last night (where Hyno got called for a questionable hold). So I am keeping 2 if Hyno isn't badly hurt and doesn't need to go IR.

And I am keeping 3 TEs because why keep 4 when the motivation is that they all sort of are mediocre in different but equal ways? But my cut is Davis. I think last night was his audition. And I didn't think he was good. He was...mediocre. To be honest, it would not surprise if any of these guys were cut. Or sticks. But keeping 4 is silly. I'd rather keep both FBs. I still think Robinson has the upside you gamble on (though I doubt he ever hits it). But there are signs both in the receiving and blocking.

I am keeping 9 OLs. My last cut, reluctantly, was Gaines. I think he has RT or OG upside. Hopefully we get him on the PS. I cut Brewer. He never reached his physical potential because his mental never matched the physical. I kept Brown but if I were doing it, I'd keep Gaines as my backup RT and have Pugh be the backup LT. I have no faith in Brown. I just think they want a vet backing up LT and don't want to have to re-jigger the whole line if Beatty is hurt---or sucks. The rest is pretty chalk. Jerry made the team assuming health the day after. Walton, Beatty, Mosley, Reynolds, Richburg, Schwartz...all easy.

At WR, I cut Parker. I think he was a placeholder and fodder for the preseason in the return game. Demps is the KR. Not sure about PR since Beckham is a question. Either Randle... or I am keeping Holliday for now.

At DE, I think Idonije should stick. Gives versatility inside and outside and on specials. Good leader/character guy also. The other 4 are easy.

At DT, I started with 5 because of Kuhn and Patterson. But I think one gets cut with Idonije providing the extra swing guy. And I think Kuhn goes. In fact, it's probably Kuhn versus Herzlich and Idonije as much as vs Patterson.

And on that, I am keeping 6 LBs. With Beason hurt and the desire to keep guys for STs, I will keep Herzlich. But he is really as useful on defense as DeOssie. For that matter, Paysinger only sticks because he can play all 3 spots equally average. But there is value in that I suppose. I actually thought Manning flashed more than Paysinger. I wonder if they would keep Manning. And...I just talked myself into keeping Manning over Paysinger. That won't be what they do but screw it. I prefer it.

6 CBs and 4 safeties are easy. And so are the Kicker, punter, LS. But I'll say this; I get the McManus cut to keep the vet. I think it's the right now move. But I also think we will regret it after this year for the next 10 years. So...

2 QBs
3 RBs
2 FBs
9 OLs
3 TEs
6 WRs

25-Offense

5 DEs
4 DTs
6 LBs
6 CBs
4 S

25-Defense

1 P
1 K
1 LS

3-Special Teams

And now I see Kim Jones saying Schwartz probably to IR. Probably keep Brewer in that case while looking to see who else got cut leaguewide. I'd still prefer Gaines.
Good list, mort,

but I'm not seeing Holliday making the team. And, I'm hoping Oakland cuts either Barnes or Boothe and NYG is interested.

mort christenson : 8/29/2014 11:46 am : link
yeah, Holliday is more of what I would do. Sometimes I go with my own feelings, sometimes what I think the coaches will do.

As for cuts of other teams, so hard to project those. But I would love Boothe back. Not sure about Barnes. He gets called for holding the bannister going up the stairs.

Asper? You will be very close with your picks.
I honestly think Davis stays at TE and may even start
PatersonPlank : 8/29/2014 12:28 pm : link
I think Robinson and Donnell are the odd men out.
I feel holiday makes this team
larryflower37 : 8/29/2014 12:31 pm : link
You know what you get with Parker and Holiday.
I prefer Holiday.
Parker needed to win the job from Holiday. I don't think he did that.
Holiday has a résumé even with the fumbles. people will kick away from him.

Build the 46-man active roster for week 1 first,
Enoch : 8/29/2014 1:44 pm : link
Then pick the 7 most valuable presently-injured players, in-case-of-emergency backups, and not-ready-for-primetime developmental projects.

That's what the teams do.

46-man active for Week 1:
QB: Eli, Nassib
RB: Jennings, Williams, Hillis
FB: Conner
TE: Donnell, Fells, Robinson
OL: Pugh, Richburg, Walton, Jerry, Beatty, Mosley, Asper
WR: Cruz, Randle, Jernigan, Washington, Holliday (PR/KR)

DE: Pierre-Paul, Kiwanuka, Ayers, Moore
DT: Hankins, Jennings, Patterson
LB: Beason, McClain, Kennard, Paysinger, Williams, Herzlich
CB: Rodgers-Cromartie, Amukamara, Thurmond, McBride, Bowman
S: Rolle, Brown, Demps, Berhe

ST: Weatherford, Brown, DeOssie

Inactive:
WR Beckham (injury), OL Gaines, OL Reynolds, DT Bromley, DT Kuhn, FB Hynoski (injury), CB Jackson

A few injury assumptions: Beason, Mosely, and Herzlich are OK to go. Beckham and Hynoski are not. Schwartz goes to designated-to-return IR. If Hynoski is OK for week 1, Conner is off the roster, replaced by Gaskins. A healthy Beckham bumps Washington to the inactive list.
I thought this was a thread about my niece
