NFT: Jesus Montero throws ice cream sandwich at scout

Bake54 : 8/29/2014 4:53 pm
during a single A rehab assignment. Montero had been playing for Tacoma - the Seattle Mariners' AAA farm team. He was batting .286 with 16 HRs in 97 games.

Quote:
According to a game official, the crosschecker then ordered an ice cream sandwich and had it sent to Montero in the dugout, escalating the confrontation further. The official said Montero -- who arrived at Mariners Spring Training 40 pounds overweight this season -- approached the stands with a bat while screaming profanities and threw the sandwich at the crosschecker. Montero had to be pulled back from the stands by Everett pitching coach Nasusel Cabrera, Safford said.

Crosscheckers are intermediate-level scouts who verify the reports of regional scouts and pass on recommendations to their teams' scouting directors.

Montero was not ejected from the game and remained in the AquaSox dugout until it was completed, the game official confirmed.

Don't joke with Jesus - ( New Window )
Who does that to a perfectly fine ice cream sandwich?

it's an improvement on last year though, he would have eaten the sandwich. Fo sho.
perhaps I should have led

with him going into the stands with a bat? Details I suppose. I guess the scout was taunting Montero about his weight by giving him an ice cream sandwich.
his value is so low right now

i really wish the yankees would make a play for him. maybe coming back to NY would motivate him to get his ass in gear.
Hope that scout enjoys his new job at Wal-Mart

Plenty of ice cream sandwiches there.
No excusing Montero

but that's a major twat move by the scout, if that story is accurate.
Montero was just pissed
Jim in Fairfax : 8/29/2014 5:06 pm : link
because he wanted a toasted almond bar.
If he could throw a baseball like that
Stan from LA : 8/29/2014 5:56 pm : link
He'd still be catching.

What a horrible trade for the M's.
Cashman gets some deserved flack
dpinzow : 8/29/2014 6:03 pm : link
but getting Pineda for Montero looks like one of his better moves
He would actually be a nice buy-low candidate...

Bird is a year or so away, plug him in as a 1B and DH (probably start him at AAA) and maybe you catch lightning in a bottle.
imagine throwing a Sammich

No, no, no...your thread title was excellent. It was the perfect hook of, "what"? I have to read this one!

Now that he's off the designer drugs he's JAG. No point in bringing back that guy with his crappy attitude
bullshit
sinctybldh : 8/29/2014 7:42 pm : link
he has hit very well at AAA and he has shown power there as well. You have no idea what the hell you are talking about.
The ice cream sandwich industry thanks Montero for the free press
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/29/2014 9:21 pm : link
something in my brain ticked and now I want an ice cream sandwich.
Maybe Montero and the crosschecker were

Not ejected after coming after someone in the stands with a bat in

his hands and yelling obscenities? What did he have to do to get ejected- actually hit someone? How would you like to have been at the game with a child and experience that kind of behavior?

IMO should be suspended.

The Mariners announced he will not play baseball again this season. Presumably they will trade or release him in the offseason.

He's hitting in AAA but has shown nothing with Seattle in the big leagues. Maybe he's better than JAG, but he has yet to show it since leaving the Yankees AND getting popped for PEDs. He's got a lot to prove and let's not forget he was one of the top 2 or 3 hitting projects in baseball not long ago. He needs to prove he has the commitment and desire to be a good major league player year after year.
I wouldn't doubt that the PEDs helped...
Dunedin81 : 8/30/2014 10:49 am : link
but the kid has been a premier hitting - not just power, hitting - prospect since before he could buy cigarettes, and he showed that in limited duty in the Bronx. Could he be a flat-out bust? Sure, much stranger things have happened. But Seattle has been a black hole for hitting prospects. Maybe all of them sucked, or maybe there is something about playing 81 games in the most pitcher-friendly of AL parks that does something to young hitters.
