NFT: Friday Mets vs Phillies: Dilson Herrera arrives

spike : 8/29/2014 6:07 pm
Friday: RHP Jacob deGrom (6-6, 3.13) vs. RHP David Buchanan (6-7, 4.21), 7:10 p.m. ET

• With Daniel Murphy landing on the disabled list with a strained right calf, Herrera has been promoted from Double-A, where the 20-year-old Colombian was hitting .340 with 10 homers, 48 RBIs and nine steals in 241 at-bats. If Herrera shows he can succeed in the majors, that could make it easier for the Mets to justify trading Murphy this offseason.
Amazing
spike : 8/29/2014 6:08 pm : link
Herrera will become the first position player in Mets history to start a season in Class A and make his major league debut the same season. He also will become the first Colombia-born player to appear for the Mets, and the 14th overall for any ballclub in major league history.

This is exciting. If he does well, he could be our 2nd baseman

for years to come. But even if he has difficulty making such a big jump at such a young age, he'll start next season at AAA. In the words of Omar in the TV series The Wire, "It's all good".
It's

possible Daniel Murphy has played his final game as a Met.
As with every move this club makes
Chris L. : 8/29/2014 7:37 pm : link
a desire to not spend any money is at the heart of it. They hope he does well so they have an excuse to not pay Murphy. He wouldn't be up if Murphy wasn't due to be paid.
That makes

Granderson looks so bad

He may well be Jason Bay 2.0 and set this team back exponentially.
It's probably too early for me

To say that but I did anyway...
It's so funny how Flores has been relegated to the
PhiPsi125 : 8/29/2014 8:28 pm : link
8th spot in the lineup.

For a moment, forget that his is underperforming. Flores hit about as well as you can in the minors...yet was benched in favor of Tejada most of the time until he was forced to play Flores consistently, finally.

Then he was stuck in the 8 hole and every minor leaguer that came up after him (Kirk, MDD, now Herrera, etc) always hit before him in the lineup...even if they were lesser hitters than flores in the minors.

At this poing, it's just funny how much Collins clearly despises Flores. TC has gone out of his way to put Flores on the pay-no-mind list. I hope Flores gets a fair shake somewhere else some day b/c it certainly won't happen under TC.
If they could only face the Phillies

I was bashed for suggesting they consider trading Murphy before the deadline. Now four weeks everyone is saying goodbye to him. It's just the reality if a well run franchise. When you have multiple prospects playing a position well, you trade the current asset at peak value and not give him a second generation contract.
Did anyone see Martino's article in the Daily News today about TDA?
Rob in Rockaway : 8/29/2014 10:16 pm : link
I don't know how to link, but basically he made an argument that he should be considered for LF next year. I think it's a pipe dream right now, but his argument made some good points including that TDA has had multiple concussion so his shelf life at Catcher may be short, Plawecki coming on strong, and that TDA may hit enough to solve our LF problem without the rigors of Catching. TDA's quotes made him seem quite open to it as well. Interesting anyway....
TDA
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:18 pm : link
would likely be one of the worst starting LF in baseball. Let's not pretend he has a special bat, he has a good bat because he's a catcher. If he were a SS/2b his bad would still be good, in LF (that's even assuming he could play the position passably) his bat would be below average.
I wholeheartedly disagree
PhiPsi125 : 8/29/2014 10:19 pm : link
Trading Murphy for an unproven minor leaguer is just another side effect of a cheap fucking ballclub.

You are going to tell me that it is a good decision to trade away one of, if not THE, best offensive player on your team because we have some prospects that are playing well in the minors? I might be missing something, but none of the hot young prospects we've promoted have even sniffed Daniel Murphy's offensive production (nor have they sniffed what any of them were doing in minors). It's a major risk to assume that any minor leaguer will give you what Murphy has given the Mets. The chances are pretty f'n slim. For an offensive starved team, trading the best offensive player is pretty fucking dumb. Now if it's a matter of money (which it most certainly is) then that's a whole another issue that will keep the mets from ever being consistently good.

I've said this a million times before...winning ballclubs pay to KEEP a Daniel Murphy. Bad/mediocre ballclubs trade a Daniel Murphy away for prospects.

You say cheap, but it all depends on what kind of player(s) they can get back. I would agree with moving Murphy in a flash if it meant they could get a a certain package back.

The fact that Murphy is our best Offensive player
Rob in Rockaway : 8/29/2014 10:36 pm : link
is an indictment of this team in general. He's a good offensive player that has no real position, is below average defensively which does not play well with our ballpark and young pitching focus, and he's an awful baserunner. He's really a 1-2 tool player that's due for a massive salary upgrade on a team that probably and sadly can't afford it.

Dan I am not sure any of us know what TDA's offensive upside is. I thought the article made some good points. If he is a 15-20 HR guy as a Catcher and potentially a 20-25 HR guy in the OF then it merits a discussion. Especially since he may be a Soriano backswing away from obscurity. I recognize that may be overstating the situation, but watching every game, the kid is taking an absolute beating back there and it concerns me.
Not
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:39 pm : link
really sure what proof there is suddenly his power would change and that's not really the issue. He's a moderate walk player, not a plus hit tool (always going to hit for a low-ish average) and it's unlikely he adds any defensive value at a position he hasn't played in the very least 7 years.
He's
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:42 pm : link
likely a 20-25 home run catcher, don't see why his offensive profile changes outside of playing more games. Not to mention you are basically killing his trade value by saying you don't think he can catch/health concerns with him catching + if he's your LF then you aren't adding one, so if it's a failure then the 2015 Mets are again garbage (that's assuming Plawecki is any better as a rookie catcher). The 2014 Mets + D'Arnaud experiment in LF + Plawecki and a FA SS is a recipe for absolute suckitude once again.
I see what you are saying
Rob in Rockaway : 8/29/2014 10:43 pm : link
I guess the concussion concern and the presence of Plawecki may be trying to force a square peg into a round hole.
2015
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:44 pm : link
Granderson
Lowrie or Hardy
Murphy
Wright
Duda
Granderson
Lagares
D'Arnaud
Plawecki

That my friends is a bad team, potentially an awful one if D'Arnaud isn't passable in LF and/or Plawecki struggles don't care how good the pitching is.
Any thoughts on Dilson at SS and sliding Flores to 2B where he seems
Rob in Rockaway : 8/29/2014 10:46 pm : link
more comfortable (or less exposed at least).
TDA
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:48 pm : link
has an wRC+ of 94 this season, that would rank...19/21 qualified MLB LF and again we are assuming he can even be average in LF

Seems
DanMetroMan : 8/29/2014 10:53 pm : link
to me the organization thinks Herrera is a stud and doesn't think much of Flores so will "cater" to Herrera vs. caring how comfortable Flores feels. Even if that's just my own guess, there pretty clearly is a MUCH higher chance Herrera is the Mets next starting 2b than Flores is their next SS or 2b so they probably don't see any reason to play Herrera out of position. What WOULD be nice (should they deal Murphy) would be Herrera being deemed capable of being the backup or even 3rd SS.
Has Flores' bat shown anything yet?
spike : 8/29/2014 10:58 pm : link
I suppose hitting in frnot of the pitcher won't help him much in terms of getting pitches to hit.

Daniel Murphy is one of the top offensive second basemen in all of baseball and a hitting machine (still leads the NL in hits). I can deal with his defense or lol "awful" baserunning as long as the rest of the infield is playing good defense. Taking his bat out of this lineup (any lineup) is a HUUUUUGE hole to fill on a team with many holes to fill already. But it's a money thing...which really sucks. As will next season.
Let me know what I said that was wrong
