My take on the preseason.

Marty in Albany : 8/29/2014 8:14 pm
First and foremost: the preseason is about preparation and evaluation, not W-L.

We found some rookies and acquired some vets who demonstrated that they can play NFL football. Finding new players with talent is good. You know who they are. I'm not going to name them.

If we evaluate the defense it looks promising. I say this because no team has run up the score on us, despite our weak offense.

The STs look decent despite having no designated returners and despite having Tom Quinn as the ST Coach.

If we evaluate the offense, it looks weak, but the five games gave the coaches an ample basis for deciding what the Giants need to do to improve.

It was not anticipated that the change in the offense would go smoothly or be an easy change from a system that had been second nature to a lot of players. On the contrary, problems were expected. If this change were easy, it would have been done last year, or even before that.

Who is to say that the offense won't improve? Obviously, if we have bad luck with injuries the season can be derailed just as it was last year, but that is always a possibility.

While, I have no idea how the season will play out, I would like to suggest one possibility. If one team has a good offense and the other team has a good defense, the difference in the game may well be decided by special teams.

Historically, our special teams have been below average, but this year I think our special teams could be very much improved. My reasoning on special teams is that TC seems to be emphasizing it more and because this season we have fewer chiefs and more indians to populate the "suicide squads."

If we can get some "hidden" yards on ST, we could win some games based on turnovers and field position.
This right here...

Just get better as the year goes on. If the Giants can be in position to make a run in November/December I'll be happy as a clam!

If Eli could cut his interceptions in half

(yes, I know it wasn't all is fault), Giants could finish 11-5.

the offense has to improve substantially. Temper your expectations.
Eli lacks a quick release and doesn't have great velocity

I don't think he's suited to this offense. He flourished under Gilbride because he can throw deep with accuracy and because he has a high football IQ and can read coverages. I suspect the Giants changed OCs because the O line was not able to give Eli sufficient time to throw deep and because the receivers were not able to make the necessary reads. Last year, when Eli had the time, he often threw where the receiver was supposed to be, but wasn't. I understand Coughlin wanting to switch to an offense that doesn't require the O line to hold their blocks for five seconds, but I'd be surprised if Eli is able to do well in McAdoo's quick hitting offense.
I'm trying to be confident about this year,

but we need a quick start. November's schedule:

Indianapolis
@ Seattle
San Francisco
Dallas
@ Jacksonville

i think this team will surprise.

I'm not expecting 11-5, but it's as likely as 5-11. The difference between NFL talent from team to team is minimal. We've got a stout defense. A good running game. And a veteran QB and coach. Why not?

Not into the alternative.

Rebuilding with a 69-year-old coach, a 34-year-old QB and the GM who oversaw the decline in talent from Super Bowl caliber to something in decline three years running.

If that's the way it goes, I'm all for throwing that administration out come the end of the season. In the meantime I'm gong to root for the very best outcome possible for this squad.
I have us between 8-8 and 10-6.

Health is the key.
If we win early with "surprise" on offense and solid D, specials we could have a winning season.

No turnovers, take what the defense gives, sound defense, sound specials, good coaching and health. Those the the keys to winning early in the season.

Stay healthy, win and continue to get better as the season progresses.

Geo, Eli has always had a pretty quick release. He has a strong arm but I do agree, he doesn't have the greatest velocity. Sadly, when he throws short passes in the past, he has too much velocity and not enough "touch" on the pass.
