I had him making it over Kuhn. Guess not. I think even at his age, someone will be interested in his services. And because he's a vested veteran, he doesn't have to pass through waivers.

Players who are up in age or been kicking around for several years or are added to rosters only when players are injured.

I put Idonije and Painter in this category- if we cut them, it's unlikely they will be picked up by anyone else and will be available to be re-signed, if needed.

He looked like he had pretty good closing speed.

Not arguing whether he should have been kept. JPP and Moore weren't going anywhere. They just signed Ayers - so Idonije would have had to beat out Kiwi or proved he was more valuable as a DE than Kuhn was as a DT.

I think he just meant he thinks no one else will sign him so he'll be there if we need him

As in, he'll be sitting on his couch if they need him.

I get your point in terms of player availibility, but the practice squad is for guys that actually practice.

These constitute the scout team that the starters practice against week to week.

That's the reason you don't keep kickers on the PS. They can't practice, and since any team could sign that player at any time anyway you're just as well off leaving them on the street rather than adding them to your PS.

But yes, there is a pool of FA vets that will be available throughout the season. Because if the vesting rules, the pool will probably stocked with its best talent between now and the end of week one.

De facto Practice Squad does not mean the 10 player Practice Squad. It means players who are ineligible for the 10 person Practice Squad but instead players who are ineligible for such Squad but are nevertheless available to be signed because no one else will sign them.

Agreed. I would have kept Quarles over Kuhn, and I'm not sure Quarles gets through waivers. In Kuhn's defense, when he did play this preseason, I saw a number of plays where he was being double teamed, or at least being chipped by a second defender. PFF gave him a -4.0 grade IIRC, but it looked to me like other teams were paying attention to him.

Wynn and Stanton may also not get through waivers.

Guys like Quarles and Wynn (if cut) have very little info available for other teams to look at except preseason film. They aren't usually going to put guys like that on their 53 man roster. When was the last NYG rookie that got claimed at the final cut down or even claimed off the PS during the season. I remember one claimed off the PS a couple of years back but can't remember who it was.

David Douglas was claimed off our PS by the Bucs during the regular season, but I can't remember if that was last year or the year before. Maybe that's who you're thinking of.

Possible upgrades to whoever NYG are considering as a 4th RB. Would not be surprised to see a claim put in.

Also some decent reserve OL emerging. I would be shocked in someone who can play tackle isn't claimed.

it should really come as no surprise at all. It was less of a surprise for Harris. This is how they stashed Cruz during his first breakout pre-season.

Both Holiday and Manningham may be waiting on injury settlements. Can they play again this year after taking an injury settlement? It might be up to both of them to decide.

I'm hoping Washington can get in there and practice with Eli to get that timing down. Fast and tall could be a great help to Eli when he's in trouble. He's dominant fighting for the ball and can grab it at it's highest point. He will win most of those battles and draw a lot of flags.

I know he's only an UDFA and made some mistakes, but I really think Quarles has so much more upside than Kuhn. Hope they make it to PS.

We need to save a roster spot for Schwartz because we can't use the short term IR for anyone who isn't on the 53. Not so for Herman and Hosley because they are on the suspended list.

No, For suspension you don't need to be on the 53. Schwartz may be predicated on vet FA pickups and activating Beason.

From all reports that I have read John Brown seems like their number three. Why would he be cut?

He meant Jaron Brown.

There's two different Brown players at WR. John Brown is a rookie and is expected to vie for the third spot.

he's become a great example of just how quickly the fortunes of an NFL player can turn and how quickly an athlete can be robbed of what makes him special. Even before the famous Super Bowl toe drag he had made plenty of plays that put his athleticism on display. Anyone remember the bubble screen against Washington that he somehow managed to take to the house? He has some incredible skills. Then he cashes in on the hard work and success, technically goes home to join another contender where he's expected to be one of the missing pieces to get them over the hump and...poof...he's gone.

I hope everyone has the 2012 season on DVR because it was obvious then and many stated it: that was the best trio of receivers we had ever or are likely to see again.

If he's really close from being 100% healthy, which is hardly a lock, how far is he from being football ready? 2 weeks? 3 weeks? So at the earliest we are hoping to see beckham on the field by week 3.

Something tells me week 3 or 4 doesn't happen and is a pipe dream.

If the giants liked him last year when he wasn't healthy they were certainly going to like him this year when he was finally able to string together a full healthy offseason. He trained bulked up and practiced. No surprise they kept him.

Who washed out here, washed out of a perfect scheme for him in Dallas, and was not signed after several other tryouts, has had a tremendous training camp in Denver...who knows why or when at this point, but for Quarles or someone in his place, the light had to come on, the work ethic in the training room and on the field have to improve, and it has to be the right scheme. He wasn't drafted for a reason and it may be a couple of years before he puts it all together or he may just be someone who looks the part of a player...but he is not ready now.

Its clear Kuhn is a practice and meeting room guy, because everything else suggest Quarles, Quarles has better physical talent, Quarles has been more durable while Kuhn has continued to struggle to stay on feild and healthy, Qualres flashed and was better in the preseason is the short time that Kuhn, those are indisputable things...if they feel practice and meeting rooms are a better judge than those 3, then we will see what happens. All i know Bromley and Quarles have outplayed Kuhn, we will see who the 4th DT is on gameday, if its Kuhn i will continue to question that.

because if they are, the fact that Peyton Hillis is a last second decision is worrisome. He's exactly the kind of journeyman that you can pick up relatively easily during the season for little money and mediocre return.

Hillis looked good in the Pats game. I think if they only carry 3 RBs, Hillis is better than Cox in just about every aspect of the game. Give me a guy who can pick up the blitz and catch a ball out of the flat any day of the week, especially if that guy is only going to be your #3 RB.

He's a guy I'd take a look at. 6'6", 215 pounds. I believe he was 2nd in receiving for the Lions last year. He had a pretty good year overall.

Or maybe keep a roster spot to pick someone up. You can't throw a dart at the waiver list and not find a better RB candidate than Hillis, the guy is slower than molasses.

Personally,I could care less if he's cut or not. But, there are lots of players who did nothing for 2 or 3 years and became very good football players afterwards. Check out the careers of Amai Toomer and Cory Webster. Robinson was drafted as a project and they knew they would get nothing after his rookie season especially when he came to camp late because of school. Last year was a waste because of injury. I would not have a problem if they kept him around as a 3rd TE.

his injury is serious, how could they waive Gaines? At a minimum, why not put him on IR to keep him with the team? How can they possibly keep Brewer and Brown? Both are terrible.

Gaines could be a Practics Squad candidate though.

He'd be out 1/2 the season. He could be back way sooner than that. Maybe game 5 or sooner?

I like him. Need lots of work. Really happy for Fenner. And not rain on any parades. Herz is going the wrong direction on that depth chart but somehow he still makes the roster and flies somewhat under the radar.
