New York Giants Official Roster Moves

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/30/2014 4:10 pm
Veteran wide receivers Mario Manningham (calf) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring) were placed on injured reserve.

The contracts of four vested veterans were terminated: quarterback Curtis Painter, fullback John Conner, tight end Kellen Davis and defensive end Israel Idonije.

Cornerback Bennett Jackson, a sixth-round selection from Notre Dame, was the only 2014 draft choice waived by the Giants.

Tackle Rogers Gaines (shoulder) was waived/injured.

Twelve other players were waived, including two – running back Michael Cox and wide receiver Julian Talley - who played for the Giants last season.

Also waived were running back Kendall Gaskins; tackles Mark Asper and Adam Gress; guard Jamaal Johnson-Webb; linebackers Terrell Manning and Dan Fox; defensive backs Chandler Fenner and Thomas Gordon; defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles; and defensive end Jordan Stanton.

Guard Eric Herman and cornerback Jayron Hosley were placed on the reserve/suspended list. Herman had previously been suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing substances. Hosley is beginning his previously-announced four-game ban for violating the league’s policy on substances of abuse. Both players are eligible to return to the Giants’ active roster on Friday, September 26, following the previous night’s game in Washington.

Finally, linebacker Jon Beason passed his physical. He is on the 53-man roster and is eligible to practice and play. Beason has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury in an offseason practice on June 12.

The current 53-man roster, which, of course, is subject to change at any time:

Gaines with a shoulder injury?
Klaatu : 8/30/2014 4:15 pm : link
Pfft. With only one arm, he's still better than Charles Brown or James Brewer. God help Eli if either of those two have to play.
They waived/injured Gaines?
Canton : 8/30/2014 4:15 pm : link
Didn't know he was hurt.
This Just Proves How Bad Our OL Is
pa_giant_fan : 8/30/2014 4:17 pm : link
When Brown and Brewer make the final 53. Hopefully we can pick up someone and cut Brown & Brewer
Only 5 CBs?
Bobby Epps : 8/30/2014 4:17 pm : link
That's pretty thin for a passing league.

Brown, Brewer and Reynolds make the final 53? We should all hope and pray that neither Beatty nor Pugh get hurt because Brown will get Eli killed, Brewer can barely play OT and Reynolds gets -0- push on running plays.

Yikes!!!

10 DL and 9 DBs?

Just doesn't make any sense to me, but what do I know?
Or the games.. for that matter

didn't expect 10 on the DL
WeatherMan : 8/30/2014 4:20 pm : link
the back end of the OL is due for changes once the rest of the cuts around the league are known. 5 CBs is one fewer than usual of late, but it's a position chock full of vets so that's not entirely surprising, Jackson likely ticketed to the PS.
That shook out about as expected, but I was hoping for magic. For
Marty in Albany : 8/30/2014 4:21 pm : link
something unexpected. For instance, Reese pulling a TE out of a hat. Oh, well.

What did they ever see in Brown in practice, except for one DE after another blowing by him?
Nice to see both Washington and Parker

Gaines is stupid. At least put him on IR to keep him with the team. He got exceptional grades from PFF, had played well, and was clearly better than Brewer and Brown, both of whom they kept. Ten OL is one too many, especially when two are Brewer and Brown. Brewer has shown very little in three years, and Brown continued his wretched play from last season.

DID BREWER AND BROWN MAKE THIS TEAM !? HOW ?

They both play like they have 2 left feet
5 CB is pretty normal
BillT : 8/30/2014 4:33 pm : link
I can't remembering them keeping 6 recently but my memory isn't that great. They obviously like Wynn's upside. He's a surprise and 10 DL is a full squad. They traded the 10th DB for a 10th DL. Not that big a deal.

They'll stash one or two on the practice squad, and worst case scenario, they can always find one on his couch, like they did with Hillis.

Judging by how quickly our DBs have dropped like flies in the past, I don't begrudge them for carrying that many in a passing league.

Most likely scenario
If they IR Schwartz

they're going to have to replace him on the 53

Dude, you misunderstand me. I'd rather have 9 DL and 10 DBs.
Schwartz won't go on short term IR
BillT : 8/30/2014 4:43 pm : link
He'd miss half the season and he could be ready far sooner than that. They'll carry 10 until he's ready.

James Brewer made the 53-Man Roster?

Anyone?

I thought so.
So many new names
mrvax : 8/30/2014 4:49 pm : link
I had no idea who Kerry Wynn was.

I really have to wonder why Gaines was cut. It just doesn't make sense to me. Sure, the coaches see practice that we don't. However, isn't play during a game more important?
M.S.
BillT : 8/30/2014 4:51 pm : link
Terrible at tackle but passable at guard and center.
Are Brown, Brewer and Reynolds
Bobby Epps : 8/30/2014 4:55 pm : link
merely placeholders for the OL until we bring in 3 other waiver claim OL or did they merely make the team because of attrition, that is, the injuries to Kropog and Gaines and Herman's 4 game suspension?

Otherwise it seems impossible that those 3 make the final 53 of any other team in the NFL.
After
AcidTest : 8/30/2014 4:56 pm : link
years of COMPLETELY FUCKING UP the OL, Reese blindly stumbles into a possibly decent OL prospect like Gaines, and waives him because of a shoulder "ailment." Sounds like a scratch that won't prevent him from playing. If it was serious, wouldn't they have told us?

Which means Reese and the FO must have actually thought that Brown AND Brewer were actually better. Ridiculous. I'm not saying Gaines is a world beater, but right now he is much better than Brown and Brewer.

At a absolute minimum, put Gaines on season ending IR, so we can keep him for next season. I assume he if clears waivers we can put him on the PS, but there is a real chance somebody will grab him.
Am I getting senile
mrvax : 8/30/2014 4:56 pm : link
or didn't Reynolds do a decent job filling in last year?
AT
BillT : 8/30/2014 4:58 pm : link
No one will claim Gaines. He'll be on the PS.
Cannot believe...
Ed A. : 8/30/2014 5:01 pm : link
they kept Brown, and Kuhn. Brown was terrible and Kuhn did nothing but dance with the O Lineman that was blocking him all pre-season. Additionally, Brewer and Reynolds are both less than average. Does not look good.
And AT
BillT : 8/30/2014 5:01 pm : link
The last thing you want is him on IR. Then he gets no work or experiance. He'll be worse next year than tis if that happens.
Short term IR is a possibility for Schwartz,
MOOPS : 8/30/2014 5:02 pm : link
but not a definite. As a new option, there's not a lot of history to develop a tried-and-true strategy.
If he's a definite to be back within say 6 weeks, then you might want to save the Temp IR exemption for someone more valuable to the team who 'might' go down in the first few weeks of the season. With 10 OL on the roster, Schwartz can always be inactive on a week by week basis.
Either way it's a crap shoot.
Hope Gaines, Jackson and Quarles make it to the PS
jeff57 : 8/30/2014 5:02 pm : link
.
mrvax: Reynolds was signed by the Giants in 2013 and then
Bobby Epps : 8/30/2014 5:02 pm : link
released. Then when injuries decimated the OL, he was re-signed.

IIRC it was his man that hit Eli in the last game that caused Eli's injury and subsequent surgery.

IMO he didn't play well in 2013 and is useless in the running game.
I believe short term IR he still takes up a spot in the roster.

No, it doesn't. It's just like regular IR but the player can be brought back after week eight.
Maybe they designated the waived/injured on Gaines
Canton : 8/30/2014 5:08 pm : link
In hopes other teams, that may of had their sites on him, will pass?
I'm guessing the roster is going to look pretty different
81_Great_Dane : 8/30/2014 5:09 pm : link
before Week 2. There'll be waiver wire pickups and some vets will be signed after Week 1.
The way Reese is blamed for every aspect of this organization
Mason : 8/30/2014 5:10 pm : link
you wonder if he is the only one working. It is no longer talent, but playing time, depth charts, medical decisions, play calls and play on the field. He literally has become every man in the organization.

This. They came up with a bogus injury to try and put teams off from claiming him, so he will pass through waivers and get to the PS. And maybe he will. But it's a risk. There is a real dearth of OL talent in this league, and some teams like the Colts and Chiefs are even worse in that regard than the Giants. They also saw him play right to the end of the Pats game. So when did he get hurt?

This is another example of Coughlin's mindlessly stubborn bias in favor of veterans, in this case Brewer and the terrible Brown. You also have to wonder if it's Reese being biased in favor of his own draft picks and big FA signings. How many years do players like Brewer and Robinson get? One of the sportswriters tweeted that Reese was determined to give Robinson another year no matter what. And how can anyone justify keeping Brown over Gaines?
