New York Giants Official Roster Moves

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/30/2014 4:10 pm
Veteran wide receivers Mario Manningham (calf) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring) were placed on injured reserve.

The contracts of four vested veterans were terminated: quarterback Curtis Painter, fullback John Conner, tight end Kellen Davis and defensive end Israel Idonije.

Cornerback Bennett Jackson, a sixth-round selection from Notre Dame, was the only 2014 draft choice waived by the Giants.

Tackle Rogers Gaines (shoulder) was waived/injured.

Twelve other players were waived, including two – running back Michael Cox and wide receiver Julian Talley - who played for the Giants last season.

Also waived were running back Kendall Gaskins; tackles Mark Asper and Adam Gress; guard Jamaal Johnson-Webb; linebackers Terrell Manning and Dan Fox; defensive backs Chandler Fenner and Thomas Gordon; defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles; and defensive end Jordan Stanton.

Guard Eric Herman and cornerback Jayron Hosley were placed on the reserve/suspended list. Herman had previously been suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing substances. Hosley is beginning his previously-announced four-game ban for violating the league’s policy on substances of abuse. Both players are eligible to return to the Giants’ active roster on Friday, September 26, following the previous night’s game in Washington.

Finally, linebacker Jon Beason passed his physical. He is on the 53-man roster and is eligible to practice and play. Beason has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury in an offseason practice on June 12.

The current 53-man roster, which, of course, is subject to change at any time:

Offense (25)

QB (2): Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib

RB (3): Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hillis, Andre Williams

FB (1): Henry Hynoski

TE (3): Larry Donnell, Daniel Fells, Adrien Robinson

OL (10): Will Beatty, Geoff Schwartz, J.D. Walton, Brandon Mosley, Justin Pugh, John Jerry, Weston Richburg, Charles Brown, James Brewer, Dallas Reynolds

Defense (25)

LB (6): Jon Beason, Jameel McClain, Jacquian Williams, Devon Kennard, Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich

DB (9): Prince Amukamara, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown, Walter Thurmond III, Trumaine McBride, Quintin Demps, Nat Berhe, Zack Bowman

Special Teams (3)

I guess he got hurt walking off the field or in the shower.

This. They came up with a bogus injury to try and put teams off from claiming him, so he will pass through waivers and get to the PS. And maybe he will. But it's a risk. There is a real dearth of OL talent in this league, and some teams like the Colts and Chiefs are even worse in that regard than the Giants. They also saw him play right to the end of the Pats game. So when did he get hurt?

This is another example of Coughlin's mindlessly stubborn bias in favor of veterans, in this case Brewer and the terrible Brown. You also have to wonder if it's Reese being biased in favor of his own draft picks and big FA signings. How many years do players like Brewer and Robinson get? One of the sportswriters tweeted that Reese was determined to give Robinson another year no matter what. And how can anyone justify keeping Brown over Gaines?

Read my previous post.

On keeping Brown..

Experience in the league and depth. Gaines if he passes through waivers still needs to be developed and has upside. It's not like he's a blue chipper that can start week 1.

I don't get some of the criticism here. Everyone here and his brother is saying the Giants have one of the worst OL in the league but now all of a sudden everyone is dying to sign their rejects to their 53 man! Wouldn't signing Philly or Dallas rejects a better idea?
because they do this for a living?
Headhunter : 8/30/2014 5:36 pm : link

You aren't depth when you're a terrible fucking player.
Riggies : 8/30/2014 5:39 pm : link
Which Brown very much is.

It's zero surprise that he made the team however. He was always going to, from the minute he signed.
Coughlin has a better record picking the roster
81_Great_Dane : 8/30/2014 5:39 pm : link
than Reese has with draft picks. Very few of Coughlin's camp cuts have gone on to be successful elsewhere.

TC's rep for not playing rookies is exaggerated. Lots of rookies get in games under TC, but they have to earn it. Somebody wrote about TC that he's the kind of coach players should want, because he goes by what he sees. Perform, and you'll make the team and play. Don't, and you won't. A lot of young guys aren't ready to perform at a high level right away, so they don't play. Once they're ready, they play.

I suspect you're going to see a lot of Richburg, Williams and Kennard this season. Bromley won't be active most games this year, but neither was Linval Joseph as a rookie.
How did Brown and Brewer make this roster?
The_Taxman : 8/30/2014 5:48 pm : link
You have to think Reese will put in a claim for a vet T/G who is better than those 2 and an upgrade at TE.

The Gaines injury sounds like a fake.

Nobody said Gaines is a blue chipper, or is ready to start. He may not even develop. But his strong preseason performance suggests that he might. He has intriguing size, strength, and length, and consistently graded out very highly by PFF. He is also better than Brown, and Brewer, certainly the former. Brown was benched and singled out by his coach last year for poor play. What have we seen in the preseason to believe that his play has improved? You keep Gaines, and just deactivate him every week, like we've done with other players.

I feel you only keep Gaines on the active roster if you're absolutely sure he won't get pass the waiver wire. Otherwise, you injured/waive him and designated a phantom injury, then put him on your PS.
re Hosley
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/30/2014 6:15 pm : link
in this case, drug use may have payed off.

mindlessly stubborn insistence in keeping veterans like Brewer & Kuhn.....who kept them as rookies? Who is mindless? Coughlin can cut a team down much better than you guys.

Steve in South Jersey : 8/30/2014 6:33 pm : link
Yes, Helsey benefited from his drug suspension. Allowing drug violators to benefit like that seems like a strange rule by the NFL.

I was thinking same about holsey...but is he worth
saving..he really sucks lately. .ill bet he gets cut as soon
as they pick up a few cbs on ps. ...
just noticed. .Wynn made it...thats a big statement
Brewer did play well this summer
djm : 8/30/2014 7:08 pm : link
Which has been discussed throughout the summer. He sucked the last few years but he did play well this preseason. Maybe the lightbulb switched on. Not sure how he did two nights ago though...

I doubt brewer was retained simply because Reese and Coughlin are incompetent. Something tells me that the staff thinks brewer can help this team.
Keeping Charles Brown on the roster is a joke.
Klaatu : 8/30/2014 7:13 pm : link
He sucked in practice, he sucked in games. The Saints couldn't wait to march him out of New Orleans and with good reason.

James Brewer is another joke. I saw more from Rogers Gaines in three games than I have from Brewer in three years.
I wish we kept Will Hill
spike : 8/30/2014 7:13 pm : link
instead of Hosley, but I guess Will was a lost cause.
I'd also love to know how Markus Kuhn made the final 53?
Klaatu : 8/30/2014 7:22 pm : link
He must be awesome in practice because he stunk up the joint in every preseason game he was in.

I read that he brings the coaches donuts. I think it was on Giants.com
He's German, Bill.

He's probably bringing them strudel.
If I missed it
Russ in Cleveland : 8/30/2014 7:33 pm : link
I apologize, but three running backs? It doesn't seem we have ever done that. Am I missing something?
Russ
Klaatu : 8/30/2014 7:40 pm : link
I figure they'll stash one or two on the practice squad, and worst case scenario, they can always take one off his couch, like they did with Hillis.
Both McBride & Hosely were beaten like drums all preseason ...
Manny in CA : 8/30/2014 7:41 pm : link
And Fenner gets cut ?

Jernigan was hanging by a thread till Harris 9ho looked like a play-maker) got hurt.

Neither Robinson nor Brewer could make any other team - shows the sorry state of the O-line and TE situation.
Keeping only three Backs
Mike L. : 8/30/2014 7:43 pm : link
has been done before, so it's not unprecedented. In regards to no OMG cuts, I can't remember when we've had one that went on to do great things elsewhere. McCants is a guy most here couldn't wait to show the door to and is doing fine in Oakland. I'm starting to wonder about the O-Line coaching.
the Kuhn love is weird

Hosley probably would have been cut if he wasn't going to be suspended. This is a way of holding onto him in case of injury, nothing wagered.
I was fan
SBlue46 : 8/30/2014 7:54 pm : link
Of Kuhn but dont expect much. HE WILL have a
leg injury soon..always does...keep Quarles around...
Patterson also is a so so old guy..why not upgrade

So if someone gets hurt, we still have the rights to a guy who sucks. Not sure I get it :)
is it just me
bc4life : 8/30/2014 8:15 pm : link
Did Brewer and Brown play well enough to make the roster?

Isn't one bad tackle enough, or am I not seeing this right?
surprised about Jackson
bc4life : 8/30/2014 8:33 pm : link
for the same reason as another poster - it's a passing league. we keep many linemen and 5 corners?

Congrats to young Kerry Wynn. They must see something special if they cut Idonije. Hope he isn't another one of those sleepers who never wakes up.

smart move by Kuhn.
Cutting the #6 CB should be that much of a surprise
BillT : 8/30/2014 9:22 pm : link
Jackson would not have been active short of injuries and will certainly make the PS. A 5th DE is a good trade off for a 6th CB.

it really opened my eyes as to how little talent there is on this Offense. We have Eli and Cruz who could start on many teams in the league. After that, maybe Jennings and Hynoski. The rest of the offense would most likely not have a starting job on any of the teams that made the playoffs last year.

I am really not sure why they cut Conner and Cox. They are going to need both of them before it is all over.
Cox will not be needed
Some Fan : 8/30/2014 9:49 pm : link
because he stunk
I could MAYBE understand why they kept Kuhn if he were young
Greg from LI : 8/30/2014 10:07 pm : link
But the guy is something like 28 years old and still considered to be raw and undeveloped. Even if he developed into a player, he'd only be a couple of years from retirement by then.
Kuhn has maybe one more season left to show something
spike : 8/30/2014 10:09 pm : link
until his rookie contract expires
Actually, it's very common among head coaches in the NFL
nicky43 : 8/30/2014 10:44 pm : link
to prefer Veterans over Rookies when there is not much seperation between the two. They like to build up a player's confidence before they put them in.
Some fan..
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 8/30/2014 11:06 pm : link
please tell me how Cox stunk. He did everything that was asked of him. He did not miss assignments. He ran hard, etc. Now, if you want to say that he did not play well enough to start, then ok. BUT That does not mean he stunk.
