NY Giants Practice Squad Signings Discussion Thread

assuming they aren't picked up, I think they should sign:

Bennett Jackson - CB/S
Kelcy Quarles - DT
Rogers Gaines - OT


For everyone else, they should look around the league. That's what I think of their overall roster this preseason.

either Cunningham or Grimble, both cut last week, ends up on the PS.

Just a hunch. We'll see.

BTW, what happened with Gaines? I thought he looked good and would make the team. Is he hurt?

Chandler Fenner also flashed some so I would not mind trying to stash him on the PS

Sy, any potential TEs that are projects to stash that got cut?

Quarles and Grimble. Grimble's injury was a major setback but I think he has the tools of an NFL starting TE. I know it's not saying much but talent wise I think he's better than the 3 that made the roster.

Quarles IMO outplayed Bromley the final two weeks. I still can't believe he went undrafted but he has an NFL future

Jackson.

Gaines.
Fenner.
Grimble/Cunningham.
Cox/Gaskins.

Four others from other cuts.

But what we really need to do is replace some of the OL and TEs on the 53.

Can we stop talking about "developmental" players and "projects" that we can "stash" on the PS? Name the last such player that we developed into a starter, or even a quality backup. This coaching staff seems incapable of that. We have a serious problem there and in our drafting.

A guy that could have been that guy this year was Marcus Harris. Larry Donnell and to a lesser extent Eric Herman still have a chance.

Andre Brown is a former PS guy that became a starter.

Jim Cordle made his way up to the lineup too, though only because Baas couldn't stay healthy. So yes, it happens. Not a lot, but it happens.

The lazy assumption is that they'll bring back their own cuts, like Cox. But a better use might be guys from other teams who have the talent to play here, but who need time to learn the system before they can contribute. Considering the Giants' modest return from the 2012 draft, those two PS slots might offer a small chance for a Mulligan on a couple of late picks.

Can he actually join the Giants' practice squad right away? That seems like a pretty big loophole in the blackout period for re-signing a player who lands on IR after clearing waivers, then receives an injury settlement and becomes a free agent.

The whole Gaines situation is strange.

I think Larry Donnell and Andre Brown actually prove my point. Donnell is JAG and Brown has been a human pinball around the entire NFL. Is he even on a roster anywhere? I actually do have hope for Harris, less so Herman.

@caplannfl: If he clears waivers, CB Chandler Fenner is expected to wind up on the Giants practice squad.

I was going to say Fenner looked good in the last few games, but frankly who really knows going up against the 2's and 3's vs. back up QB's.

Ballard, Derrick Ward (Jets Practice Squad), Andre Brown immediately come to mind.

Marcus Harris was on the PS last year and he was going to make this team before hurt.

But was injured.

Sign Jackson, Cox, and Grimble if they think his head is in the game.

Excellent point. I was thinking the same thing. I hope that's not the case. Still don't understand why Brown was kept over him.

is a good example of a guy who made a decent contribution. The rest of those listed are just guys who made it to the regular roster. Granted, making it to the big time is an accomplishment, but from the fan pov, nothing to get excited about.

there won't be 50 players across the entire league claimed before next Sunday for other team's active rosters. Remember, vested vets are FA and not subject to claim.

Similarly, PS players aren't claimed. They're signed as FA and legal to sign as of 12:00 noon today.

liked Kuhn coming into camp, but he was outplayed by Quarles, who is also a lot younger. Kuhn offers run stuffing, but we already have Hankins, Jenkins, and Patterson.

Don't think so. Yesterday teams were putting in claims for other teams' cuts. The bottom teams get first crack and all players claimed go immediately to 53 man roster.

I'm saying the worst 10 teams last year will probably stock up with a lot of players cut before we can get a chance to claim them.

Gmen were number 12 in order, that means 11 teams ahead of us could put a claim in on some player cut and we lose out. Like I said, all of the decent lineman and tight ends will be gone before we can get them.

Future starters are likely Hankins and Bromley.

More draft picks in DT ? Good. If the Giants went D & O line early and often, I would never complain. Load 'em up.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. � The Giants filled seven on their 10 available practice squad spots this afternoon. Six of the seven players signed today were waived by the team yesterday in the roster cutdown to 53.

The practice squad players who were with the Giants in training camp are: running back Michael Cox; cornerbacks Bennett Jackson and Chandler Fenner; linebacker Dan Fox; defensive end Jordan Stanton; and wide receiver Julian Talley.

The seventh player signed this afternoon was tackle Nick Becton, who was waived by San Diego in the cutdown to 75 players on Tuesday.

Becton, 6-5, 323 pounds, originally signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech on May 13, 2013. He spent most of his rookie season on the San Diego practice squad, although he was on the 53-man roster for six weeks last year and appeared in one game (at Oakland, 10/6).

I agree. Do some really think the Cox puns are funny? Also if you think Reese decides all these cuts and PS by himself, you are wrong.

I'm sure the Giants told his agent that they have Cox targeted for one of the two veteran slots; but if they can reach a deal a running back they like better, Cox might lose his spot. Basically, you're talking about backs from the 2012 and 2013 draft classes (or earlier, if they missed some credited time for some reason) who are currently out of work and would not have qualified for the practice squad under the old rules. That should be a pretty big pool, but I couldn't name anyone off the top of my head. Or they could look at guys like Spencer Ware who do qualify for a conventional spot, and use the veteran slots on other positions. (Not recommending Ware - he's not a particularly good fit.)

I've told this story before, but here it is again: Former NFL TE Jamie Williams told me this story in roundtable interviews for "Any Given Sunday." When Williams as a rookie in the Giants training camp, there were two other rookie TEs: Zeke Mowatt and Malcolm Scott. The Giants heard one of their rookie TEs was involved with drugs. They thought it was Williams so they cut him and kept Scott. It was Scott.

Williams wasn't a mainly a pass-catching TE, not really the kind of TE Parcells liked, but Williams went on to a pretty nice career in the NFL, and Scott, well, Scott didn't.

Again: These moves get made for reasons we fans don't know about, and sometimes those reasons are bullshit.
