16.5 sacks in 2011, named AP ALL PRO in January 2012 had back surgery the Summer of that year.
Came back last year slowly from that injury, then started to play like he was on fire, till …. he hurt his shoulder.
I remember that he consulted with Dr. James Andrews, who recommended no surgery. But watching him in the preseason, the kid (Moore) looks a lot better. Is JPP still hurting, and doesn't want to say, I hope not.
We'll see what this year brings, but if he could get at least 8-9 sacks, I would think it would be a good year for him.
Unless it is against 2nd team OLmen like the Pittsburgh game. Then he might be successful pressuring (not sacking) the 2nd string QB.
Their DEs we're average at rushing the passer
The teams with the best records year after year with few exceptions are the teams with the best turnover ratio!
Cut down on turnovers equals giving your team it's best chance to win
Aaron Rodgers three 6 picks last season
Nick Foles threw 2 and he was not the most mobile qb in the league which suggests that Eli still has a chance to lead the Jints to success if he simply takes care of the ball better and makes better decisions
We will see
I hope TC gets to have a sit-down with him. TC can usually find a way to get the best out of a player.
One play he knocks the LT backwards into the QB, sheds and makes the sack. the play he got injured on, vintage JPP tracking Jennings from behind, Jennings just barely slipping tackle which caused the injury.
that OAK game gives hope he can return 2 form. he is hustling to the ball again, that's a start. that rudy ruddiger never quitting, flying 2 the football was a big part of his game
we may've finally counter-punched with our CBs u r already seeing QBs pulling the ball down
However I think that is actually true in some cases. Another thing that is often true, that you don't hear much:
"You know, when they go into your joints or back with power tools and installing hardware, you may 'heal' in the sense that the injured part works, but it doesn't work exactly the way it did before, and it doesn't feel the way it did before. And when you're an elite athlete, very subtle changes can affect your performance. So I'm having to re-learn how to perform at a high level with my surgically repaired body."
So, if you are expecting JPP to get 16 or 17 sacks, you are asking for a very rare performance from a lineman.
You are also comparing him to Strahan, but the Strahan who had been in the League for 5 or 6 years in an era where there were more sacks to get. JPP did not have a lot of experience coming into the League and got by on his athletic talent. The opposition responded with chipping, double-teams, quick passes, and misdirection. It takes a while, as it did with Strahan, to recognize and counter those strategies within the overall gameplan.
If JPP can get to double digit sacks and play solid ball against the run, recognize that as a very, very good performance.
Helluva lot better than any line he's been on since. That year, everyone demanded an answer. I'm sure someone on pff can find how many times he was doubled or tripled by year.
Tuck played in 12 games and had five sacks.
Osi was great, but he still only played in nine games.
JPP was on fire that year. Also, he still has Kiwi tagging along, and Jenkins and Hankins won't be a bad duo at tackle. Moore will be solid as a pass rusher as well, given they get him frequent snaps. JPP has to step up.
Let's see how he does for the full season and then make a decision. Same could be said of Eli too...no guarantee he comes back if he throws 27 INT's again this year.
Remember when Tuck got all depressed and dropped off? He came back because he is a bona fide football player. JPP is an insane physical freak but is the drive to be the best there? He came late to football and it came easy to him until it didn't come so easy to him.
But, I'm a guy who believes most back pain is a physiological manifestation of stress if there aren't any physical defects.
2) Injuries. Who's better after them? Back problems aren't usually cured forever.
BEST CASE scenario I see (too) is a 10-12 sack a year guy. But honestly, I'd be surprised to see him get that, The DL isn't the strength of the Defense anymore. I think they'll be solid, and have pressure, but I don't think they'll terrorize QBs the way they used to with the current DL. Unless someone on the opposite side of JPP can become a menacing pass rusher.

But I don't expect JPP to have a repeat of 2011 because so much of that year was through hustle. I've never seen a DLineman show that much consistent hustle ever. He was just all over the place. We got demolished in that Saints game but I'll never forget the hustle JPP showed that night. The tackle of Jimmy Graham on 4th down was just one of his highlights that night.
His combination of athleticism and hustle is really what made him. I expect the athleticism to return but the hustle will probably never be there again as he becomes more measured as a vet. That means he'll need to improve his pass rush repertoire and skills, but so far he really hasn't shown a deep arsenal of moves at all. I just haven't seen that from him yet.
I just expect a lot more 2012 type years (people here underrate his 2012 too much) , where he plays at a clear Pro Bowl level but never gets to the passer enough to be considered a DPOY candidate. Hopefully he can step up as a pass rusher and return to that All Pro dominant level.
agree
His jump off the snap is terrible too. Wish he would've learned some pointers from Osi there.

Just bull rush, over and over again. If it doesn't work, he's got nothing.
That's on the coaches. They should be working with him all the time developing pass rush technique. You'd think JPP would want that too. It would help his sack/pressure numbers resulting in a lucrative contract for him.
He better show some new moves this year.
That said, his performance does not come close to a "break the bank" type of contract. You need to be outright phenomenal to get a gigantic contract and it has to be on a forward looking basis, not back. I am extremely nervous about the possibility of giving JPP money after this contact runs out.
Of course, rumor always was that Kearse's partying took it's toll on him, not sure if that's the case with JPP
But I do fear that while he may be a good player, we'll never again see the JPP we saw in his 2nd season in 2011

me too
The name $trahan was all the rage, Jevon Kearse was the more coveted player on BBI and the lynch mob hated him. For the record (if you exclude his rookie year) he had 51.5 sacks in first 7 years and 90 in his final 7. It can be done, he can come back he just has to change the way he plays, trains, eats, etc. He has to do it lighter like Strahan did or it's not happening.
