Giants Sign OT Nick Becton (Chargers) to Practice Squad

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/31/2014 3:08 pm
Becton, 6-5, 323 pounds, originally signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech on May 13, 2013. He spent most of his rookie season on the San Diego practice squad, although he was on the 53-man roster for six weeks last year and appeared in one game (at Oakland, 10/6).
Well, we need bodies for the OL

I'm not sure how talented SD is on the OL but if they are talented and just were attempting to take this guy back to the PS maybe we got lucky with a good warm body with upside.
Shhhhhh....

Don't tell Greg!
Signing like this
BlackLight : 8/31/2014 3:25 pm : link
make you really wonder just what sort of evaluation goes into deciding on a player like this.
Seems like he was highly-recruited out of high school

Some info on him

Didn't make Sy's list, but

I'll keep an open mind.
So he's better than Gaines?
Canton : 8/31/2014 3:33 pm : link
Any tape from the preseason?
Although Becton didn't start until 2012,...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/31/2014 3:34 pm : link
...he played a lot in 2011, and he may have caught the Giants' eye during their intensive diligence on David Wilson. Perhaps something good can still come from all that work. Like most one-year college starters, Becton icame out really raw. Looks the part, though, and a year under D'Allesandris probably moved his development along a bit.

You like the signing more than the Giants letting Gaines go?
Since Becton was signed to the practice squad, not the roster...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/31/2014 4:19 pm : link
...the Gaines comparison is sort of apples and oranges.

I think I'd rather have Gaines, but this signing mitigates the loss. As I said and admit, I think a lot of people, myself included, went a little too far about losing Quarles and Gaines. But keeping Brown at the expense of Gaines is irksome.

You do realize that Gaines has an injured shoulder, yes?
VT guys

Never do much, it seems.
And maybe
old man : 8/31/2014 4:50 pm : link
that injury is worse than we may know.
Torn rotator cuff?
I wonder
Semipro Lineman : 8/31/2014 5:07 pm : link
if Charger fans are lambasting their management for letting this guy go? After all Reese and Coughlins have two recent superbowl wins so they must know more than Charger management, etc...

This guy was one of my sleepers to make the San Diego Chargers 53-man roster today. I thought that Nick Becton had more potential than Mike Harris, and he has performed better than Max Starks. He was an undrafted rookie out of Virginia Tech, meaning that he had been seen by all the scouts and none of them thought he had what it takes to make it in the NFL, but I like his combination of size, power and quickness.

I'd like to see Nick end up on the team's practice squad, because I think he could eventually be a very good backup swing tackle.

Oh noes
Arguments about Gaines are moot
PEEJ : 8/31/2014 8:29 pm : link
he passed through waivers to IR
He certainly has good size and is supposedly
The Duke : 8/31/2014 9:11 pm : link
athletic as well. Maybe a year or two in the Giants program will get him where he need to go to be a real contributor for us.
Yeah, they should put thru the same developmental

Don't bother, BB. I would have thought that this would have been obvious because it was certainly reported enough, but hobbyhorses are fragile things at best and tend to upset when confronted with reality.
