I thought he was still on the field at the end of the Pats game.
Me too. He played right to the end and seemed fine. Strange. I suppose it could be an injury that wasn't readily apparent until he cooled down, or one that was later diagnosed as more severe than initially thought.
As far as practicing, I don't think that's allowed for players on IR. Not sure about meetings, etc.
1) Leave him on IR for the year, in which case he can attend meetings and do rehab but can't participate in practice. In other words, act as though he went straight to IR without being waived.
2) Give him an injury settlement - most likely for the minimum six week "major injury" period - and release him. Another team could sign him, or he could be eligible to rejoin the Giants around Week 12 (six weeks after the end of the period covered by his settlement).
If they go with option 2, I'm not sure what restrictions apply to him joining a practice squad.

Wondering why the Giants did not fill all 10 slots today?
Painter is ineligible, but they'll probably need a young arm just to help out in practices, especially if they want to give eli some rest during the week once the season's in full swing.
RE: Wondering why the Giants did not fill all 10 slots today?
are they bringing in players for tryouts for the last 3 spots?
My best guess:
They are expecting to sign (or re-sign) some veterans after week 1, and some of the young guys now on the active roster will end up waived, and then possibly land on the practice squad.
Sam gets workout..I'd' make him a lb...back qb maybe..
definitely a vet Oline...tc will have a bunch of guys try out
I think they could give Sam a shot as well. They kept Ojomo around for a couple seasons for getting sacks in the preseason. Sam is a DE, not a LB. May the Giants NEVER go down the convert DE to LB road again.
