this is the type of place you need to go. Will probably cost a couple hundred, and unfortunately they are not open on labor day. If I were him I'd be there first thing in AM on tuesday and rescheduling my flight for late tuesday night or wednesday first thing AM if possible link - ( New Window )
My wife, unbeknownst to me, had 2 passports in our special documents folder that we keep for travel. I grabbed the wrong one which had been replaced by a newer one because she thought she lost the other... well it turned up and they both looked identical and I had no idea the one I grabbed was voided.
We went on a 5 year wedding anniversary trip out of the country - no problem leaving - but as she handed the passport to the booking agent she realized somehow it was the wrong one and started freaking out. We live in VA but flew out of NY so the kid could stay with our parents - there was really not a great way to fix the error in line to get our tickets, so we went on the trip and enjoyed it for about 4 days. Then it was time to look into the passport debacle.
We found the US embassy, they issued a temporary passport so we could get back in without issue, for a fee, took a full business day to do it -- and it worked perfectly fine at customs on the way back in.
In fact, part of me thinks it wouldn't have been an issue if we had done nothing, but it wasnt an expired passport, just an old replaced one.
SO
If they are out of the country right now, with a passport that is an issue, this is what i would do. Call the embassy and see if it can be taken care of in a day for a fee. If it can, make an appointment, do it, and don't let it ruin your trip.
Travel requirements on their site state "a passport that is valid upon entry and for the duration of stay in Aruba". I know at the land borders expired passports are utilized accompanied by a birth certificate but international air travel need valid passports.
I'm in aruba now and just wanted to thank you guys for all your help! I flew in on Monday and just picked up my bro at the airport today. You really saved the day ( and vacation!). He went to the Hudson st US passport agency early in the am on Tuesday and had the passport in his hand around a quarter to 2 and then flew in this morning. We're extending the trip a bit so no harm done.

Thanks again guys! I truly appreciate all your help!
But tomorrow is Labor Day.
Kick your brother in the nuts for doing something so dumb.
I'd go without him and tell him to figure out how to get there within a couple days

Well, at least he's paying for your drinks throughout the vacation, right? Or paying for the hookers?
Thanks again for the advice!
Looking forward to the game on Monday.
