I can hardly wrap my head around Brewer making the roster.

BlueLou : 9/1/2014 1:57 am
Not after what we saw from him in 2013.

That is all.

I think its fair to say he was outplayed

by guys currently looking for jobs. The one place the Giants seem really hesitant to let an UDFA or some journeyman on a futures contract neat out an incumbent is s long the offensive line.
I think you nailed it rud.

I can kinda understand how an OL must at least attempt to execute his assignment properly, and in concert with 4-5 other OL/TEs, but is there another player as proven to be as incompetent as Brewer in execution on the roster? At least Herz gives us really good STs coverage, and as for the TEs at least there is huge athletic upside with a guy like Robinson...

10 OLs and 2-3 of them look to be beyond mediocre; they are closer to garbage.
Let's revisit this topic after Week 1,

when vested vets can be signed without the team having to guarantee their salary for the year.

Besides that, keep in mind that we don't know what the coaches and front office knows. Meaning: We haven't seen all the practices, we don't know how much Brewer improved, or whether he was playing through an injury last year that has now healed, or any of a thousand things that could influence this decision. We fans read practice reports, watch games, think we know what's going on with these guys. We don't.

I think Brewer being on the roster is simply because Of Browns shoulder". If Brown is healthy enough to practice and play week 1 I think Brewer is gone, unless the thought is he can play both OG and OT.
I think

Brown isn't any better than Brewer.
And I

will simply wait for the real season to begin and actually see for myself.
Brewer, Brown, Reynolds

Flip a coin. Surprisingly, not one of the guys from Sy's list on another thread slipped to us from the OL. That is what surprised me the most. I expected us to upgrade the OL and we didn't.
It's 2014

which leads to 81GD's point, you only have a fraction of the required info to make a decision. It could be he showed up to camp five weeks ago with a renewed professionalism and maturity, and has done everything asked of him.

It goes to show how difficult it is to acquire talent in this league, both our back OTs leave much to be desired.

Certainly surprised that all three made the roster. Reynolds I think was decent against Suh last year, and Brewer was OK in the few games he played this preseason. Up and down as usual. I think PFF gave him a +2.0 grade FWIW. When he gets his hands on someone he can be very effective, but has trouble with inside moves, is confused by stunts, and often looks lost in space.

It looks like Gaines may have really been injured. If true, I was wrong for ripping the Giants for keeping Brown instead. I thought it was manufactured because he played right through the last snap of the Patriots game, but I guess not. But I'm still surprised they kept Brown over somebody from the waiver wire. Brown was pretty bad this preseason. I thought of the three, he'd be replaced by one of the OL mentioned by Sy. The Giants must think he's still got something left, or maybe they don't want to bring in someone who isn't familiar with our system. Whatever. This is who we go to war with against the Lions.
every guy we

of a draft pick Diehl was in the 5th round.
It's fun to speculate
AnnapolisMike : 9/1/2014 9:07 am : link
But does anyone really think that the Giants would choose to keep a lessor player over a better one? Like others have said . . . fans operate with limited information. Unfortunately...I would imagine it is going to take several weeks before we have a feel about how good the offensive line is going to be this year. In the meantime we will have to endure any number of the sky is falling and JR sucks threads.

Nonsense to the "we don't know everything opinions"

A fairly attentive fan focused on Brewer during a game can plainly see that he struggles a lot at his job. He showed it all of last season and he showed it again this pre-season.

If you feel that you need one more game to make your decision then so be it. But Brewer making this team is a reflection of how bad this team's roster is at a key position.
I keep bringing this up
djm : 9/1/2014 9:23 am : link
Didn't brewer have his best camp yet? Even PFT rated his preseason performance highly, fwiw...

Brewer had a good camp. That's probably why the giants kept him. Hopefully it carries through to the season.
Good camp?
Jimmy Googs : 9/1/2014 10:54 am : link
They kept Brewer because he beat out the other awful O-lineman they brought in to compete with him for the last backup spot.

Nothing more...
I love the way...
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/1/2014 11:40 am : link
people evaluate the play of players around here.

Want to complain about Brewer in 2013? Great.

In 2014? It is simply a biased speculation and nothing more.

We sure have a lot of posters who can glean the best nuggets from never seeing a practice or by having no clue what they see in a game.
Yeah, people just have no clue
Jimmy Googs : 9/1/2014 11:56 am : link
what they are even doing when they watch football.

I mean "Thank God" there are things like instant replay, TV analysts and certain BBI posters otherwise nobody would know what the hell was going on...

Yeah..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/1/2014 12:08 pm : link
because those analysts are always dead on, and getting good info on OL players is as abundant as Jennifer Lawrence snatch pics.

Face it, most of BBI (including myself) has no fucking clue what to look for in an OL player. The smart ones are the people who no enough to keep their mouths shut.

Not being able to wrap one's head around why a backup OL is on the roster is the epitome of either smug cluelessness or just plain cluelessness.
Well, this we know
Spock : 9/1/2014 12:15 pm : link
The Gmen think more highly of the three amigos- brewer, brown, and Reynolds- than BBI does. And secondly, the Gmen have not subscribed to Sy's newsletters. Lol

Again

Brewer had a good camp. Look it up. Check the sites that gauge oline play.
Yeah..

The next time I break down the OL's play will be my first.

But hey, why don't I look like an ass by calling for some player's head without having a fucking clue?

There are plenty of other ways for me to be an ass, and it is a heck of a lot more accurate to call BBI'ers morons than Giant players.
Yes I bet you know many ways
Jimmy Googs : 9/1/2014 2:43 pm : link
.
I think its pretty evident
dep026 : 9/1/2014 2:49 pm : link
that with a strong camp, injuries across the OL, and his versatility to play a couple OL spots was a reason to keep him. I dont know how good he will be when he gets in there to play.... but he knows the calls, he knows a few positions. Exactly what a backup should be.

If we are looking for talented OL who can produce out on the FA market, theres a good chance they would have stuck with their original teams to begin with.
Fair enough Dep...
Jimmy Googs : 9/1/2014 2:52 pm : link
all good points.

I am looking forward to Brewer being on the inactive list though every week.
