NFT: Mac to PC Microsoft Word Formatting question

Hammer : 9/1/2014 2:53 pm
Folks,

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with formatting issues when exchanging Microsoft Word files between Mac's and PC's.

My office utilizes Word 2007 for the PC and I am considering purchasing a Macbook Air and using Word for the Mac in conjunction with the work station version.

Formatting is critical for the legal documents we draft. If formatting changes ever so slightly when porting documents back and forth between the operating systems I cannot purchase a Mac.

Please let me know if you have any experience with this issue.

Thanks a bunch.
It can change, yes.

Depending on the age/version of the respective Mac and OS systems, etc.
I find this to be...

much less of an issue than it was even 5 years ago.

it is a huge problem if you save documents as .docx -- the new file extension. My local counsels use Macs a lot and ruin the formatting on my briefs something terrible. However, if you save as .doc there is no problem.

You should only be having that problem if you're making files in a newer version of Word and then trying to open them in an older version.

.docx is not a new extension, it's like 7 years old and has become the new standard for Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, Google Drive, etc.

The people I'm sending it too are not using 7+ year old versions of Word. It's not just my problem -- it is several firms and they report having it a lot -- and the fix is always to just go to .doc
Thanks for the info guys

So, if I understand correctly, as long as I save my files with the extension .doc I should be ok using both the Windows 7 PC and the new MacBook Air.
