I love Coughlin

but I don't get why he gets upset about the Beckham questions. He first told us there was no problem with him then he said he got hit on the back of the leg and there was no setback then it is very hush hush on the injury. I get annoyed with the media as well when they constantly ask the same questions over and over but today seems like the first time TC answered the question with any resemblance of a time table. I agree with him that you just have to let him get over the injury but it shouldn't have taken this long to address it somewhat properly.

I understand why beat writers ask AND I understand why Coughlin reacts the way he does to the question. I am with Coughlin that sitting Odell til he is 100% is the best thing we can do for him. If that means sitting the first four or five games then so be it. He know the playbook, is a smart guy and is supposedly a polished receiver coming out of college so lets see what we have with him when he is 100% healthy and ready to go.
It was ok for the reporters to ask, it's their job
BillT : 9/1/2014 4:52 pm : link
And it's ok for TC to say enough for now if there is going to be nothing to report for a while.
Everybody's a professional here.
81_Great_Dane : 9/1/2014 4:58 pm : link
If you're the reporter, you ask: "Is there any update on Beckham?" Because that is your job.

And if you're TC, you answer: "No update today." Because that is your job.

If you're the reporter, you don't get mad at TC for having no update, and if you're TC, you don't get mad at a reporter for asking.

And then everybody moves on. Until tomorrow.
Maybe TC ,

in anticipation of these redundant questions, open with a statement on the subject and not answer any more question on the subject in that session. He has done that in the past.

TC didn't help matters either with his "no setback" comment so whatever...

I think he gets annoyed because at the bottom of his heart he knows any answer he gives is bullshit. He doesn't know, the doctors don't know, Beckham doesn't know, God only knows.

I'm sure he wants to explode every time he gets that question because it's that question that's driving him fucking batshit basically since the guy showed up.A big fistful of Pffffftttt..., is all the Giants and TC have gotten from BecKham so far.You don't think Coughlin would love to know when Beckham will be back?Sure he would. Fact is he doesn't have a clue. It's a constant irritant ,and trivial shit like that is what's distracting while you're trying to prepare for your opener. Just some annoying BS he has to deal with everyday. And the reporters already know he doesn't have an answer. They're basically kinda fucking with him because they can. They basically pummelled an answer out of him, that both he and they know is worthless, and if he's wrong the press can make a bigger story of it in a couple of weeks.

For anyone who hasn't come to grips with the fact that Beckham won't be a factor this year, now is a good time to focus on what we have as a team as we open the season.I'm hopeful we get him back soon but I doubt I really won't concern myself with it till after the bye,Because if he does end up being a difference maker on this team, I won't count on it happening before then.

True. But I don't see it with him missing all of camp and OTA's. If he had made it through say 1/2 of camp and came up lame I'd have more hope. He just doesn't have the real reps AND he is a rookie to boot. I just hope he is dynamic returning punts and eventually becomes the 3rd wideout near season's end.
any coach would be upset

...if they were facing yet another real possibility of another useless first round pick contributing nothing, in a do or die season where the offense needs all the help it can get.
TC can't answer Beckham questions
deadkurtrulz : 9/2/2014 1:26 am : link
because he has never seen him play. Hard to know what to expect from a player that has not made it thru a single practice. His health is not the only issue with Beckham now.

I don't understand people that believe Beckham will be playing when his hammy is better. Based on what ? His reputation in college ? Rookies have to earn playing time with TC. He will have to practice hard and impress Tom to play. Won't be seeing him any time soon if at all.
Question
JFIB : 9/2/2014 9:12 am : link
Did Beckham practice during OTA's? How far back does this hammy go?

He practiced once and then reinjured it a couple weeks later. Effectively zero training camp for him.

As someone who has a news beat and is also an assigning editor, let me explain how this works from the beat reporter's point of view.

You are the Giants beat reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle. As a beat reporter, you check in daily with your sources. Some are official sources, like Pat Hanlon, Tom Coughlin and whoever else is made available to you by the team or the league. Some are sources you have cultivated yourself, who may talk to you on background, and basically clue you in on what you can ask official sources.

You are competing with the Times, the Daily News, the Post, Newsday, the Bergen Record, all the TV stations, ESPN and even Connor Hughes at BBI to break news. You are under constant pressure to break news. Constant. Like, every day you hear that if you and the other reporters don't break more news, you're going to be gone. If you just keep up with everyone else, you get to stay employed a little longer. (Given the business conditions afflicting professional journalism these days, that's not an exaggeration.) If one of the other reporters beats you on a story now and then, you get yelled at by your editor. If it happens often, you go back to covering Great Danes football for the Albany Times-Union,

If somebody else beats you with the news that Odell Beckham Jr. is returning to practice, you have a bad day. If someone else beats you with that news because you didn't ask the question, you could lose your job.

So you ask the question every day because it's part of your daily check-in with your official sources. Maybe you ask Pat Hanlon and he says "I don't know, you'll have to ask Tom." Or maybe you have a great confidential source among the Giants medical team, who says "Here's what I know, but Tom is the guy who'll announce it when there's an official change." Or maybe nobody will tell you anything. But you ask every day because it's an obvious question, and you have to get the obvious questions out of the way before you can move to the more interesting questions.

This is not the reporters "fucking with" Coughlin. It is the reporter doing their job. Tom Coughlin doesn't define their job. They don't work for him. They work for their editors, those editors are not going to keep you if you come back and say "I stopped asking because Tom Coughlin didn't like the question." Because if you say that, your editor will scream at you "Who gives a fuck what Tom Coughlin doesn't like? This is New York Fuckin' City. If you can't hack it, go back to Albany. I have letters from 50 guys who want your job and if I ever, ever hear that shit from you again, one of them will be sitting at your desk and you'll be moving back into your parents' basement."

Or words to that effect.

Hope that clarifies.
The moral of that story is sports journalism is a terribly-run gig.

That's pretty much how all journalism has always been run. The new thing is that now you can do BuzzFeed style listicles for clickbait: "Ten Injuries That Made Tom Coughlin Furious." And that crap works.

I hate that crap.

Twitter and instant reporting has raised the stress level of everyone. This is supposed to be the escape from stress, not another form of it.
Twitter isn't the problem for reporters.
81_Great_Dane : 9/2/2014 4:44 pm : link
If anything, it lets reporters break news more quickly. It's a great tool for reporters who are adept with it, like Mike Garofolo. It's also a great tool for gathering information. I was driving down to L.A. from the Bay Area the night that they had the power outtage at the Super Bowl. Brodcast went out in mid-sentence. Once I realized what was going on I told my wife to go on Twitter on my smartphone. Tweets from the reporters and spectators were more informative than anything on the radio. Also hilarious.

The real problem for we journalists is the 24/7 news cycle of the Internet era. In the print newspaper era, you had to file once a day, more or less, unless you were covering a massive breaking story where there were constant updates. You could write a story, fact-check, get context, re-confirm, be methodical. Now, if you have news, you worry about holding it even long enough to spell-check your story, because somebody else could get it and post it, and you've lost your scoop. That has ratcheted up the stress level enormously.

You always had to be a bit of an adrenaline junkie to enjoy covering breaking news. Now, though, you have to have an almost superhuman resistance to stress to be on a competitive beat. You can be late on a story just by going to take a leak. You can find yourself writing furiously at midnight because something on your beat broke online at 11:45. You're never off, and you're never off deadline.
