I know people are freaking out because our offense looked so out of synch in the preseason, but that was nothing like the offense we will be running. Aside from that small stretch in the 2 minute drill which we looked like a pro offense, we were very basic and ran a vanilla offense.
Macadoo came here saying he wanted to run an up tempo offense that gets to the line quickly and allows Eli to put us in the right play. Did we see any of that in the preseason? I think the preseason was more about working on a few things and figuring out roster spots than it was implementing our offense.
I don't think we are going to come out in week 1 and be the 2013 Broncos, I do think it will take a few weeks until we really get in a groove, but I'm expecting a good offense on monday night that can gain yards in the air.
I think we have a solid group of RB's and a line that's decent running the ball.
I actually like Randle more than most.
And Eli can't be worse than last year.
Obviously an optimistic take, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that this develops into a solid offense.
Randle has the physical ability to be productive, but I'm really starting to wonder if he can put it together mentally. I'm not a fan of Jernigan. Maybe Washington can surprise us and demand playing time.
that being said, I don't believe we saw half of what this offense is capable (or incapable) of.

against them seems like a safe, minimal expectation.
To be fair, I thought the same exact thing against the Panthers last year. That didn't turn out even remotely well.
One thing I'm pretty sure of this year is that I have no idea what this team is going to do. Good or bad. No clue.
I sort of like it that way.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I don't think we'll have a very good offense - at least early on.
Of course, an offense can look bad for a quarter, or half, then make adjustments and/or just play better. You see that every single week in the NFL.
The sample size is small, and the offensive plays have been vanilla no doubt.
The flip side is, the defenses we have been facing are probably very vanilla too.
Bottom line, we aren't going to know unitl we see 3-4 games.
I also think it will be interesting to see how the brain trust approaches running the offense. We can't be sloppy as hell like we were last year in the first six weeks.
Well, it's better than being the minicamp champs like Dallas and Washington often are.
if i have to watch eli throw one more INT into triple coverage to cruz who is getting mugged as he works down the field, i might lose it.
the scary part is we are back to needing Randle, Jernigan or Donnell to step up and make a bunch of plays because D's will key on Cruz and Jennings
When you've been running the same system for a while that's probably less the case but I do believe that we are going to see a lot more of a screen game and quick passing game to supplement a good dose of running. I don't think we used a whole lot of the passing looks we'll see during the pre-season games.

Given the Lions secondary issues, the Giants passing game doing well

Exactly. I was understating that the OP was saying less than it seemed. Most of us understand
a. 'We haven't seen the Giants offense yet…' and
b. 'It will take time…'
And finally,
c. This week, they should be good in the air. Because, Detroit's weakness.
So…yeah. Stuff most us do know at this point.
Of course, if c. proves untrue, it will be because b. And on we go.

That always feels true to me. We never know.
But it seems fair that coming off last season, and given the things we currently know, to have low expectations. Which are the best, really. Because there's only potential for upside surprise. I don't think there's anyway the 2014 Giants could actually disappoint me.
The only way they can disappoint me is if they fail to improve on offense as the season gets on.

I understand that. Even there, I'm tempering my expectations. I really want to believe that, over time, this will prove to be Eli's bounce back year. But if not, even that wouldn't be an out of the blue surprise. And would only confound future expectations even more.
There's very little we should even think we know right now.
I don't disagree Micky. However, most Defenses will, at some point, not let you run the ball. Eli is going to have to pass or have the threat to pass otherwise the run game will not get you down the field.
I have struggled to be optimistic given how poorly the offense has looked during preseason games and the reports from team practices indicating much of the same.
While it is possible that either 1) the offense is already much improved and it is being very well "disguised" during games and practices or 2) the offense will gel quickly and continue to improve during the season (as the 2007 defense did), if I had to guess, I'd say the offense starts out poorly (maybe very poorly) and gradually improves as the OL and Eli and the WRs get more "in synch". I believe an "OK / average offense" is the best we can reasonably hope for.
I think the defense will have to be something special (all units, not just the secondary) for this team to sniff the playoffs.
If we lose games were it comes down the fourth quarter, I'll be ok. I want us to compete and not just hand the ball over to the other team.
Last year was completely frustrating how careless we were with the pigskin.

Okay, that's a good point. It would be disappointing if we saw the same stupid mistakes from the new O that we've seen so much in the past. A big one would be the slow to get to the line/delay of game bullshit that this should specifically eliminate. That would be more than 'disappointing', though.
Is Randle a decent WR who puts up numbers for a losing offense or is he a legit WR that can help this team win games? Same with Jernigan.
The running game should be a lot better...it has to be...but even if the running game takes 3 steps forward the WRs will need to play like men this year. That's the one position I am not sold on, yet. I think way too much attention has been focused on the OL and Eli.
I'm sure they are, at least until they get the passing game situated but the concerning thing about that as well is that the offensive line isn't a "great" run-blocking line. They aren't going to run on a defense thats ready for the run.
Its going to be a rough season, at least the first half of it.
It would be one thing if we had a Bavaro or Shockey at TE to go along with an elite OL and MArshall Faulk type at RB. But when you objectively look at the offensive personnel here, there's really only one elite talent --Victor Cruz. Then you have a solid player in Jennings and the rookie shows promise.
Tell me that JErnigan or Randle turns into a star and I will feel a lot better about things. They need to win 1 on 1 battles.
We'll need the system to click, the coaching to be excellent, and lots of guys to be operating near their ceiling for the O to be good.
No, it was the players that are on the#1 offense, but it was not the offense that we will be seeing in the regular season.
