John Gruden: Has concerns about Giants' new offense

Canton : 9/2/2014 4:13 pm

Quote:
"We've been studying the Giants carefully for the last couple of weeks," Gruden said. "It's been up and down throughout the preseason. Eli Manning has changed his fundamentals, even his stance differently in the shotgun. There are a lot of different receivers. There are new linemen. Yhere are new running backs. So not only is he learning a new system and learning new coaches, he's had to react to a lot of new players everywhere.

Quote:
"Eli Manning has just got to stay committed to it," Gruden said. "He's got to continue to keep an open mind, and hopefully they get Odell Beckham [Jr.] back, because they just don't appear to have the firepower at wide receiver or at tight end that Giants teams have had in the past. And the offensive line is still a big question mark from a personnel standpoint, regardless of the system.

"So I'm more concerned with the personnel right now, the question marks that they have on the offensive side of the ball, than I am with the system."

I can't wait until monday night

i'm done with this shit...doubt my ass. Hows that.
wasn't yelling at you, Canton
djm : 9/2/2014 4:15 pm : link
i'm yelling at chucky....
Don't really think he was disrespecting the Giants
PhilSimms15 : 9/2/2014 4:19 pm : link
Just stating the facts. Everything he said seemed to be on target. Its going to take awhile, Eli needs to hang in there even when the offense does not click, and they need Odell.
Hard to
Pork Chop : 9/2/2014 4:19 pm : link
disagree with any of his points. New system plus new personnel = concern. Especially when not many of the new personnel are obvious and immediate upgrades.

I'm hopeful that they put it together, and confident that TC will rally the team, but I have the same concerns as Gruden.
I think that's a fair assessment.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/2/2014 4:20 pm : link
I see nothing wrong with it.
Can't disagree with Chucky on this
dpinzow : 9/2/2014 4:20 pm : link
I'm more surprised he didn't give his usual optimistic viewpoint

"There are a lot of different receivers"...?
Mark C : 9/2/2014 4:31 pm : link
Huh? I only count one, and he's not even seen the field yet. Cruz, Randle, Jernigan and the TEs aren't new personnel to Eli.
Nice to open on MNF
chops : 9/2/2014 4:35 pm : link
and pray that Eli doesn't stink.

Yes, the D will keep us in the game.

This is it.
It's pretty hard to disagree with him if you're being objective.
Exit 172 : 9/2/2014 4:43 pm : link
But I guess it would be better for the guy who's going to do color analysis during the Giants first game to just keep his non-"yay, Giants!" opinions to himself.

Not really sure what was wrong with anything he said.

He is announcing the upcoming Giants game

Should he not talk about the team?
Even though he was captain obvious...
bradshaw44 : 9/2/2014 5:21 pm : link
It was refreshing to see that he understands the situation. Other asshole pundits out there just say that Eli is washed up and that's their rationale. They want him gone because he has made them look like assholes on numerous occasions.

I take no offense to what Gruden said. That being said, it was preseason. We could all be in for a big surprise come Monday night.
He is captain obvious

to those of us that spend all day on a Giants message board

Very few people follow the team as closely as we here do

I think a lot of people here forget that

We got roughly 8m in CAP room
Carl in CT : 9/2/2014 5:25 pm : link
Anyone hear of a plan? Or are we rolling into next year? Not like the Giants to not go up to the CAP in a given year.

of course he should talk about the teams and the game but why grab the low hanging fruit. There is so much more to this game and to this team and even to the offense than what everyone keep harping on.
sounds accurate to me
Geeman : 9/2/2014 5:56 pm : link
what did he say that wa sinaccurate?
Actually if everyone knew this
crick78 : 9/2/2014 6:21 pm : link
they wouldn't be calling for just ONE player's head.
Presuming you accept the analysis ...
BronxBob : 9/2/2014 6:35 pm : link
... more or less, this is how a guy about to announce (or do commentary on) a game involving the team would discuss it. Compare this with the quotes from Jerry Rice in the article focusing on Cruz ... pretty much the same analysis without any prime-time-hype.
Rice says offense will click with new system - eventually - ( New Window )
I think Gruden is right on the money…...
Simms11 : 9/2/2014 6:42 pm : link
He's always been fair to the Giants and likes Eli. I think this is more an idictment of JR then anything. He's got to be on the hot seat this year!
Sorry
RetroJint : 9/2/2014 7:15 pm : link
lost all respect for Gruden when he suckholed around Dan Snyder, petitioning for his brother to get the HC position. Gruden knows the WCO. He was one of the prime acolytes in the second generation of Walsh followers so he knows what he is talking about. He has a keen eye for detail. But he was a manipulating, agenda driven con artist for his brother.
what?
kepler20 : 9/2/2014 7:34 pm : link
Not sure at all what is wrong with some of you guys. Zealots and sycophants against anyone who has anything bad to say about eli or the giants.

Gruden is as positive and even handed as an analyst/commentator gets. He's never seen a QB he doesnt like.

and as usual he is right on the money with his analysis.
based on the pre-season
Peter from CT : 9/2/2014 8:15 pm : link
it doesn't take great insight to be concerned about the Giant offense. Frankly it seems just lazy to pick at what might go wrong.

Much more interesting to analyze what the Giants need/could do to make it work. Of course that would require creative thought.
Get Odell back?

When did we ever have him?
