This is who they are. A few observations/questions:

Victor in CT : 9/9/2014 8:29 am
1) Walton stinks. Don't even waste anytime starting the Richburg era at C. The OL is a shambles again.

2) It is clear that Cruz is a great weapon as a #2 receiver and slot guy in 3 WR sets, but he is not a # 1. Looks like Randle will never be the player that we hoped. Jernigan sucks too.

3) Why do they spend high draft choices and big FA $$ on CBs when Fewell is only going to revert to Cover 2 bullshit schemes anyway. And why always a soft coverage on 2nd or 3rd and long? This is why the D can't get off the field.

4) TC repeatedly states that they need to return to running the ball, yet for the 1st half while the game was still in hand thanks to the Lions stupidity, the "run/pass" ratio was 9/22. WTF? It's not like they were lighting it up throwing it.

5) Eli is clearly uncomfortable in this WCO, it isn't who he is. Not saying he can't figure it out, but it will take time. Did TC or JR think this through well enough when hiring McAdoo? Since the OL sucks and the receivers are pedestrian, shouldn't they be using the fullback more and pounding the rock? And what's with the ridiculous amount of shotgun formation?

6) Hankins looks great. JPP was active in the run game, not so much as a pass rusher.

7) I am pissed at Will Hill. Stevie Brown is a dolt.

8) Were you all screaming at the TV like I was on 1st and goal at the 1 when they passed on 1st and 2nd down to 2 unproven guys?

9) Fewell again shows that he is a shitty Def Co. They can't play Cover 2, they need to press. For one, they don't have enough pass rush to make it work, secondly they have big $$ invested in supposed stud corners and he is misusing them and lastly, they are going to be hard pressed to score, so the D has to be dominant for them to have a chance. As Eric, me and many others have stated, outside of the 2011 stretch run when the pass rush woke up, Fewell has been mediocre at best.

10) Many of us have brought this up so forgive me for doing it again: When does Reese start to take the hit? The OL is a shambles still, he passed on a guy in the draft who could really help them now. They still have no TE, the WR corps is diminished and to an objective observer it could appear that Gilbride was made the scapegoat for the personnel dept's failures. Bill Walsh and Vince Lombardi together couldn't make this offense work because the talent stinks at too many positions, especially OL.

11) In the 25 games since the 2nd half of 2012 they are 10-15, and were lucky to get a couple of those last year. You are what your record says you are.
This isn't a WCO.

Eli's problem is not the syetem
UberAlias : 9/9/2014 8:34 am : link
It is the vacuum of talent on the offense.

This, and Victor completely agree with #10. This offense is terrible but it didn't happen overnight, and it's happened under his watch.
I am beginning to think that my 6-10 prediction
Victor in CT : 9/9/2014 8:42 am : link
is looking generous after that "performance". It was like the '70s, with Weatherford as Dave Jennings, the punter being their best offensive weapon.
Reese shoud be let go now..
DJ5150 : 9/9/2014 8:50 am : link
.. the new GM will get the entire season to evaluate the team and look over the scouting in the early stages of the college football season.
First off Reese isnt going anywhere yet.
jjgmrg901 : 9/9/2014 8:55 am : link
Are we saying get rid of GM then that means TC is probalbly also gone and we are in rebuilding stage.

You dont rebuild with a 35 year old QB.

I am at a loss for what they are going to do. I have to remember it is still only one game.

Remember how bad we looked in 2007's first two games??
No

Agree with almost all your points
JoefromPa : 9/9/2014 9:02 am : link
especially about Fewell and Reese.

My only point would be that I really think the Lions are one of the best teams on the Giants schedule this year, at least talent wise, and the Giants just were not ready for their level of play.

However, I can't stress enough how much I agree with you about Fewell. I was very confused by all the talk about how good the Giants defense might be this year.

When has it ever been good under this guy?

How would u describe the offense?
Reese
cm512 : 9/9/2014 9:08 am : link
I predicted 5-11 and think the Mara's will have to clean house after the season. However, I think we should not overreact to the first game. I am curious what the team looks like weeks 9-17. Hopefully with a healthy Scwartz and Beckham. This season is most likely lost but anyone who thought they were going to be good was not paying attention.

It was top 10 last season, pay attention.
Reese is taking the hits now
DavidinBMNY : 9/9/2014 9:19 am : link
I expect Reese to be acting as if his job is on the line, I think he knows it is, but also Reese while he has final say is not the only guy with Personal. There's an entire department here and the Mara's are involved. Did they make bad picks - YES. Is there a talent void as a result. YES.

They can't get ODB on the field fast enough for me. If they wait to long the season will be over before it starts.
I agree with you on Cruz
Dinger : 9/9/2014 9:21 am : link
It seems that the last two years he's more prone to 'hearing footsteps' and having 'alligator arms'. There were, again a couple of passes that should have been caught and not just by cruz.

I also think its time for a change with TC and Reese. While I am not giving up on the season and I love what TC and Reese have done, it just feels like this is the same old problem. Unmotivated, unprepared and/or unwilling players out there going through the motions. I'm sure at some point we'll see some fire in the players but to have a team that goes through fits and starts doesn't work in the NFL and is extremely frustrating to watch.

I will say I was happy with Donnels play and I was actually happy to see them take a shot with two 'unproven' players in the end zone. I think Moore is going to have a decent year and I think the defense wore down in the second half, though I do hate the Tampa two as well.
It would be nice to have Beckham, but his impact will be
Victor in CT : 9/9/2014 9:22 am : link
negated by the poor OL play. Eli will still be under duress.
is cruz even

a great #2/slot anymore?
Dinger, I think TC is getting the most out of what they have.
Victor in CT : 9/9/2014 9:28 am : link
They just don't have enough talent to contend. That said, if they end up dumping Reese, they should let the next GM run the coaching search. TC is a great coach, but he is 68.

is he going to play well then? go back and watch some 2011 games - that guy doesn't live here anymore either
Stevie Brown
Mike in Long Beach : 9/9/2014 9:51 am : link
was the worst player on the defense last night, IMO.

And I stand by my comments a few months ago that letting go of Hill was fucking stupid.

I've been saying since 2012 that Stevie Brown is not an every down player and he proved it again last night. He is valuable as a ball hawk in obvious passing downs only.

Victor hit right on the nail..

I agree with pretty much everything. Clearly Jerry Reese dropped the ball this season again. Fewell is who we thought he was, a shitty DC. TC is lost and unfortunately has no answers for all these issues. The Oline is worst oline in the league by far! Poor excuse for an Oline, this is completely I unacceptable for Nfl standards. It's just pretty much a mess right now, and very embarrassing..
I agree on Will Hill. When you have so little talent on your team
Reese's Pieces : 9/9/2014 12:48 pm : link
to begin with, how do you let one of your few difference-makers leave because he was caught twice smoking marijuana? I'll bet when the league comes out with its new policies on substance abuse suspensions that marijuana is downgraded.

Meanwhile, in San Fran, where they have a lot of talent on defense, both management and fans get behind Smith, who is in an almost identical situation as Hill, except that Smith was abusing cocaine and had violated some weapons laws.
