Getting Blown Out With Disturbing Regularity

Danny Kanell : 9/9/2014 10:29 am
In their last 20 games:

2012:

Bengals 31 - Giants 13
Falcons 34 - Giants 0
Ravens 33 - Giants 14

2013:

Broncos 41 - Giants 23
Panthers 38 - Giants 0
Chiefs 31 - Giants 7
Eagles 36 - Giants 21
Chargers 37 - Giants 14
Seahawks 23 - Giants 0

2014:

Lions 35 - Giants 14

That's 10 losses of over 2 TD's in their last 20 games.

So they've been soundly beaten in half of their last 20 games. That's Jaguar level play folks. With Eli Manning as the QB in all of those games.

It's Reese, coaching, players etc etc. This is an organization failure from top to bottom.

Quite possibly the worst stretch of Giant football in 15-20 years.

The regularity with which our DBs seem to have their heads up each other's asses is maddening. 4 games from now, they'll "simplify the scheme" and it will get better. defense had played on a short field for this whole stretch...just something to keep in mind.
I just hope

if there's a 7-9 finish or even another 8-8, that there's recognition of the need to change finally. Everybody goes.

Reese/Ross get fired. Coughlin gets to go out.

If we have a high enough draft pick to get a top QB, we do it.

moespree : 9/9/2014 11:53 am : link
The players suck. The personnel sucks. It's not difficult to see why either. The Giants are now afflicted with a problem that makes for poor football teams. Bad drafting. When you draft badly, holes open up all over your roster, and they cannot be plugged when the poor drafting continues. Poor drafting at the OL position, TE position, LB position, and WR position, and quite possibly DE position. You're not going to win many games or even be competitive in many games in the sport of football with those positions being below average to poor. That is on Reese and his team.
very disturbing.....
BillKo : 9/9/2014 11:56 am : link
and it's all about controlling the LOS.

We can't do it on either side, and teams are eventually over 60 minutes going to wear us down and pile on.

Even last night...the game is sorta close for a time period. Then....we can't move the ball effectively, and we can't get near the QB. Game snowballs out of control.

I'm not ready to lump this game in with the rest

of those blowouts just yet. This was Mcadoo's first time game-planning and calling plays for a regular season game, and it happened to be against what I think will be a very good Lions team. There's a lot that we can take away from this game but I need to see much more before determining that this fits into some kind of pattern for the Giants.

Pretty alarming and just embarrassing. You hit it on the nail, it does start from top to bottom.. The biggest problem has been Reese and then I would say Coaches like Fewell, he should have never been hired for this defense. He doesn't fit in this defense. Who knows what they have in this OC McCadoo? Could he be another shitty coach hiring by Reese and Co.?? He was a QB coach not an experienced OC?? Just seems like this Org doesn't want to spend the money on quality coaching most the time. Kinda how they treat signing any quality players, name any potential Pro Bowlers right now on the Giants Roster?? Good example is the Oline, the worst by far in our own division?! smh..
Personally, I would have gone after Norv Turner

Is a new OC also. Former QB coach. He clearly had a game plan and the horses to carry it out. It was night and day they way gameplanned us on both sides of the ball. We look like the same freaking team as last year... And the year before.

Interceptions off of own players heels. Multiple turnovers. Wide receivers getting outmuscled for the ball. Drops. Opposing receivers ranging throughout the middle of the field uncontested.

Beatty missing blocks. Moore missing sacks.

Yeah. The really frustrating part of the recent struggles is how many times we haven't even been competitive. So many of these games aren't even in doubt by the 4th quarter because we're already too far behind and completely inept.

arcarsenal : 9/9/2014 1:17 pm : link
And for fucks sake. It doesn't matter WHO is coordinating this offense. We simply do not have enough talent. The line is bad, the WR's aren't very good and we have the worst group of TE's in football. Good luck doing much of anything under those circumstances.

Fuck all. It's actually WORSE than 1991-1992. Fuck fuck.

Jernigan was the best WR on the Giants last night. If you don't laugh, you will cry.

Ruben fucking Randle. HE's like a 2008 Amani Toomer except he's dumb as fuck and has shittier hands than 2008 Toomer. 2008 Amani Toomer is better than a 3rd year Ruben Randle. And THAT is our #2 WR. God help us
hard to believe it could be worse than 1995
Greg from LI : 9/9/2014 1:42 pm : link

Shockeyisthebest80 : 9/9/2014 1:52 pm : link
The year they won the Super Bowl they lost a game by 4 TDs.

In 2007, they lost 2 games by at least 3 TDs.

Kyle hits the heart of it
JonC : 9/9/2014 1:57 pm : link
Below average OL talent, lacking playmakers at WR and DE, team speed appears to have slipped on the whole.

The brass might have spent in UFA with the belief this team could contend, but it's clear the roster requires more talent infusion, and it might take two or more offseasons to get them.

That season also opened with a MNF asskicking, 35-3 to the Cowboys. At least the Cowboys were a great team that ended up winning their third title in four years - this one was to the goddamned Lions....with Jim fucking Caldwell as head coach. Hard to sink much lower than that.

First TD only happened because of Detroit penalties. Easily could have been 37-7 or worse.

i get the cowboys opening game comparison, but to me it seems more like 1996 - in 1995 there was hope after the giants pulled off six straight wins to finish 9-7. dave brown looked like he was going to be the real deal. this year, expectations were muted after the brutal season last year, even with the offseason signings.
To me it's pretty simple
Go Terps : 9/9/2014 3:56 pm : link
A few years of poor drafting coming home to roost. The Bardens and Beckums and Austins are now caught up.

I actually think the team has done a decent job in FA of turning Chernobyl into Three Mile Island, but that still isn't going to win anything.

I'm not drawing any new conclusions from last night...a brand new interior OL against those DTs was always going to be a problem.

These next two, though...gotta win these. If they lose either I'd agree with the mob that a 10-6 ceiling was probably too optimistic.
Good point by Go Terps

yea these next two games are huge
djm : 9/9/2014 4:03 pm : link
but honestly, even if they squeak two ugly wins out, I still won't be sold that this team is ready to compete. I need to see good football out of this team to believe. I'll take ugly wins, but I won't believe in this team until they start playing good football. Something we haven't seen since October 2012.

I took the approach in the preseason that nothing mattered until the regular season. I was willing to give them some leeway and wait until the games count....last night was ugly...again. Hard to keep the faith anymore. But lets see where they are in 2 weeks.

The D is going to have to play extremely well. Fewell will keep running his soft zone BS out there...lovely..
If they win the next two
Go Terps : 9/9/2014 4:11 pm : link
I'm not gonna be sold they can compete with Seattle or SF, but in this dogshit division they could give the Eagles problems, I think.

We have to expect that their comfort level in the offense will improve, right?

Lots of good thoughts here but this is to me is the most pertinent and succinct. Nearly half the players Reese has drafted over the past 5 years (45%) are out of the league. Not moved on, filling depth/ST spots on other teams. Deemed not good enough to play in the NFL by virtue of literally no interest from the other 31 teams. There have been incredibly unfortunate events like Chad Wilson's accident and David Wilson's injury. But when almost half of your draft selections aren't actually good enough to play...thats a spectacularly bad number.

Depends. Only if the OL improves. The guys on the interior are the question marks, yet Beatty and Pugh were god awful.

That's why every April I say the same thing: draft players, not positions. Outside of quarterback, kicker, and punter, it is not possible to have too many good players at a particular position. There's too much roster turnover to build up too much depth anywhere.

Reese has probably focused too much on WR, CB, and the DL when he maybe could have taken better players at less sexy positions (OL, TE). I don't think it's been a fireable offense...I'm just hoping he improves based on the experiences of the 2009-2012 drafts.

I wager that in 2015 you'll say the same thing again, and find that many disagree with you out of a belief that you have to account for need nearly as much as talent.

What were the excuses when you thought there was better talent? 5 game winning streak to begin, then an unexplained 4 game losing streak, alternating games of wins and losses and a mad dash to try and rally. Lately swoonball comes earlier in the season. Nothing new to see here.

The giants right now, this minute are one of the weakest teams in the league. We keep up at this pace and we could lose every game.

That said...and I agree this is alarming ... But let's puts something I perspective. They drafted beckham because even more the n OL they needed offensive weapons. Beckham not being able to go, is a huge blow. Imagine if rankle was the 3 and do a functional 2 pushing as a 1.

Let's wait until game 3 before rolling this in just like the rest of the crap we have see . Mic this is continuing as of game 3, meaning giants don't win one of the next 2, it is time to focus on big changes I personal.
We suck...bad
