New hope for the O-line

nicky43 : 9/10/2014 9:59 am
In TC's presser one of his responses to a question about the o-line gives me hope. Here is the question and his response then I explain my hope:

Q: You’ve had to make a lot of movement with your offensive line, especially the guards, up to the first game. How do you think the guards played last night and maybe the overall offensive line?
A: I think there is good, there is bad. No one wants to hear that, but that’s what it is. There are some good plays, there are some bad plays. There are plays that I am sure the players would like to have over. I wish there was more continuity and consistency. You’d like to see it played like a veteran line that can look at each other, don’t even have to verbalize and know exactly what the intent is as the guy you are lining up next to, but that is not the case right now. We are going to have to play our way through and there are probably going to be other changes and other things that take place along the way that perhaps even at that point will keep us from having that type of continuity. But it is an effort to get to the best we can be, so that is just way it is.

I hope when he says "there are probably going to be other changes and other things that take place along the way that perhaps even at that point will keep us from having that type of continuity." that he is talking about possibly finding new upgrades to replace some of the line personnel we currently have because I just do not have any faith that this level of talent we currently have can be coached up enough to handle the better teams. I know it takes time for a line to get the continuity but I don't care. I don't want to waste any time with this current line because it is not ever going to be good enough.

So as far as I'm concerned the sooner we bring in better players the sooner they can work on that continuity. Here in lies my disappointment with JR. He just didn't give us a good enough team for the coaches to work with.

You are not going to get "better players" at this point.

The season is underway. This is what they have. They'll get schwartz back, and you hope that the unit improves by increasing their familiarity with each other and more and more reps.
The biggest change I would make right now
MikeN in Ottawa : 9/10/2014 10:02 am : link
is to insert Weston Richburg to centre and either play Mosley at right guard and move Jerry to left guard or leave Jerry alone and put Mosley at left guard. Walton is the worst center we have had since Chris Bober and I'm not sure Bober was this bad.
and not playing a team with suh

.
Blaming Walton for playing poorly against Suh and a motivated Fairley
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/10/2014 10:04 am : link
is kind of silly. Such is a complete animal. He makes most offensive linemen look like rag dolls.

Jerry got his lunch money stolen too. There's lots of blame to go around. That lions D-line obliterated the run game.
what pisses me off is not that the current interior cannot handle the
alligatorpie : 9/10/2014 10:07 am : link
lions interior.

it is:

a) we should play like that on OUR interior DL!

b) have been ranting about drafting guards high for ten years.
Another possibility is...
Milton : 9/10/2014 10:09 am : link
...moving Pugh to left tackle and starting Mosley, Brewer, or Beatty at right tackle--or Jerry at right tackle and Mosley at right guard. I know that sounds crazy, but it wouldn't surprise me.
I like moving Richburgh t Center as well

I've been studying all of Walton's snaps preseason as much as I can and I'm just not impressed and I admit I was glad when JR got him but I would have been glad if every person JR got on the off season was an o-line guy.
Jerry was by far our worst offensive lineman
kmed : 9/10/2014 10:15 am : link
in game 1, IMO. If any move needs to be done, it's replacing him. He air blocked on a few occassions. I thought Walton has shown some good things, but this was a really hard matchup for him. I don't think removing him is going to fix anything right now.
RE: "Better Players"
bob16 : 9/10/2014 10:19 am : link
Where are these "better players" going to come from? Guys on the street are out there for a reason. If you're lucky, you might be able to find some "bodies" to fill up the bench but that's about it. What they have is what they'll have to live with for the rest of season and all we can do is keep the fingers crossed that the current OL will play better as they become more familiar with each other.
I expect to see improvement over the season ...
Beer Man : 9/10/2014 10:23 am : link
But I don't think we will see a playoff caliber line anytime soon as there are too many hurdles to cross. For example:

1. The entire Offense is still trying to grasp the new system. It’s going to take time, and we will continue to lose games until they get comfortable with it

2. There were far too many holes on this team to fill this past offseason to be able address all (that doesn’t let JR off the hook, IMO the O-line doesn’t have the talent because he ignored far too long)

3. The O-line has not developed any continuity as of yet. This too takes time, probably longer than it would normally take, because they are trying to learn new system at the same time

They can come from other teams if JR would get his head out of his ass and recognize that our urgency for this merits giving up a few future good draft picks.
I'd like to see Mosley in for Jerry
BillT : 9/10/2014 10:29 am : link
Mosley was the starter throughout camp. He's a better run blocker than Jerry. Let's start there.
sometimes its about how players play together
Peter from CT : 9/10/2014 10:30 am : link
and not just how good they are. We will see.
And let's rember that they are starting 2nd string guards
BillT : 9/10/2014 10:36 am : link
Now, Richburg may be as good or even better than Schwartz but having both the starting OG go down just before the season began was a killer. It's a unit that needs continuity.
I's too late
Doomster : 9/10/2014 10:39 am : link
to start juggling this OL around, now....

When Schwartz comes back, I would put him at RG, where he might be more comfortable......have to hope them playing week, after week together, that these guys will start to "get it".....
Mosley replacing Jerry is the obvious change for Week 2.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/10/2014 10:47 am : link
Just look at the depth chart. Mosley is the starter. Back spasms limited him in practice, so he didn't play. He might help, or he might suck, but he's likely to be the RG against Arizona. I'm sort of glad they held him out in Week 1. Facing Suh wasn't going to help his back, or his confidence, and I doubt it would have altered the result on the scoreboard.

If the staff concludes that Walton in unsalvagable, they can accelerate Richburg's move to center, where he seems destined to settle in eventually. I wouldn't expect that to happen at least until October, and probably until the bye, if/when Schwartz returns. Pulling the trigger at center while Schwartz is on IR means making a starter of Jerry, Snyder, Brewer or Reynolds - none of whom would necessarily represent a net gain from Walton.
Valentine on Mosley and Jerry - ( New Window )
New hope...

Queue the pictures of Luke.
you have to put players in their best spot to achieve success.
Victor in CT : 9/10/2014 10:52 am : link
They signed Schwartz because he had a great season at RG, played his entire life since High School at RT or RG, yet they play him at LG. Richburg is a C, and a potential monster at that. Play him there. They don't have Ray Wietecha or Brian Williams there now, they have a journeyman who hasn't played for 2 years.

This team is in no position to be giving up future draft picks. There's a lack of talent issue.
Its this like...

...hope and change..?..yeah, that worked out really well...
We need to see what Mosely can do
SLIM : 9/10/2014 12:39 pm : link
I think the known long term players are Richburg, Pugh and Schwartz although we don't know where for any of them. Beatty, Walton and Mosely may be solutions. We need to find out about the three of them this year and try to settle in on a line for next as best we can.

When Schwartz returns, he could play

- Right tackle if Beatty is terrible with Pugh replacing Beatty.
- Right gaurd if Mosely can't cut it.
- Left guard if Walton is the weak link as Richburg replaces him.

The key is that he can only play one position. If we have multiple weak areas, then we have to go into the draft again.
the team has 10 OL on active roster
aquidneck : 9/10/2014 12:53 pm : link
and another 2 in reserve in Schwartz and Herman. That's a lot of bodies and suggests the coaches are still trying to sort this mess out.

But we aren't without talent. Including Schwartz, 9 guys currently on the team started NFL games last season, Walton is a former and once-again starter, and Richburg a highly touted rookie starter.

I'm pretty confident that we have at least league average talent on OL, but we're in desperate need of continuity and likely to play like a bottom five unit, until Flaherty and Coughlin settle on a starting five and folks begin to understand their roles and their linemates.

So I think the chances that the Giants bring in new OL bodies this year are approximately 0%, but I think it would be a positive sign if we see them cut a guy or two.

It would mean the coaches and remaining players were on the same page and that the Giants brass had figured it out and no longer were hedging so many bets.

Ramifications to that strategy! You aren't going to get a starter and if it is a back-up, he is a back-up for a reason. Injuries, injuries, injuries, oh, and suspensions are impacting the OL. Beatty is coming off surgery, Schwartz is out, Moseley has back problems and Herman is suspended. The primary need is for Eli to become comfortable with the quickened pace and moving outside the pocket to extend plays. Add the need for the WR's to pay attention and The defensive backfield to get on the same page!
SLIM: There's also a combination of your second and third options.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/10/2014 1:04 pm : link
Mosley at LG, Richburg at C and Schwartz at RG. I guess it's fair to consider this a long shot, since the coaches chose to put Schwartz on the left and Mosley on the right before either was injured. Not sure why (to give Beatty veteran help seems to be the consensus opinion on BBI), but whatever the reason, it probably still applies.

Snyder is an option too, though an unexciting one. I had forgotten about Herman. There could be a lot of changes in the weeks around the Giants' bye. If Beatty flames out, we might even see something like Pugh-Mosley-Richburg-Herman-Schwartz, which would represent a complete reboot from opening night, with three new starters and the other two in new positions.
Herman was a mauler in college

but he looked really bad last year. He looked slow and his footwork was terrible
Replacing this guy for that guy is not going to work.
