Statements from ownership about how the offense was "broken", and "why did it take so long to find out Jernigan can play..." punctuated a dismal season in which it seemed all the blame was heaped at Kevin Gilbride's feet, and he was shown the door. Looking back now, I think it's safe to say that the offense wasn't broken, the personnel was. Doesn't matter if it's Ben McAdoo or Kevin Gilbride, last year's roster was set up to fail.
Now, don't get me wrong here... I have always wanted to see Eli in a new offense, not because I didn't like Gilbride (I was a staunch defender of his playcalling and results, here), but because I wanted to see Eli in a less complicated offense that was on par with what other QB's in the league run. I've always wondered whether Eli's high INT totals were the result of poor play, or the result of the miscommunication on offense of the WR's. I don't want to turn this into a complexity debate, I'm just going on what other QB's like Jim Miller, Tim Hasselback, and Kurt Warner said after leaving this offense, that it was the most complicated that they had ever seen...
So here we are... In my own case, I guess you could say it's "be careful what you wish for", because now you've got it. Right, wrong, or indifferent, this is now the direction on offense we're committed to going. I still am looking forward to seeing Eli in the new offense once we get it fully installed and some experience in it, provided our personnel can hold up. I think it may take a year or two before we reap any benefits from the change overall. So while I do feel bad for Gilbride, I know if there was EVER going to be a change, it had to be last offseason. I still think we get better as the season progresses. Young players, young line, new system. I'm hoping for a strong enough finish to this year, whether we make the playoffs or not, that we bring em' all back next year and give it the time it deserves to give it a true go.
Ultimately, though, I just think Gilbride was scapegoated last year, and didn't get the respectful exit he probably deserved, in hindsight.
But many here are asserting it's a "two year" program
If he finishes strong, he'll be back.
-None of our TEs would start anywhere else. Detroit has 3 TEs better than any of ours. Christian Fauria looked like Tony Gonzalez.
-Without ODB (who is a ?), we may have the worst starting WR duo in the NFL.
-Do I really need to talk about the O-line? It's one of the worst (if not the worst) in the league.
-Our FA signings have been an issue as well.
Talent is the issue. Drafting needs to get better. We've had some bad luck, no doubt, but this roster just plain stinks.
My point is even with a full camp and no chronic leg problem the likelihood that Beckham would have a major impact was small. The way it stands now, I doubt he makes any impact at all.
I'm thinking this is the last year for JR, TC, PF, etal.
It takes nothing away from what was accomplished in the past, but the name of the game is WIN Now... and if they don't get it done, change is needed.
If you're not moving ahead, you're falling behind.
and if we dont make the playoffs this year it would be borderline criminal to retain coughlin, even if reese also deserves blame. No playoffs in 5 of the last 6 years at that point, and could have easily been 6 straight years if the division didnt suck so much in 2011
another down year and eli is in trouble too. Major changes are all on the table with another bad year.
Didn't we just watch the result of Mike Lombardi overhauling the Lion's offense in the same length of time that the Giants coaching staff has had?
We've watched teams go from cr@p to contender in one off season with a change of the coaching staff many times in the past. Some can get it done, and obviously, some can't.
Now the Giants are in no man's land. The rebuilding process should've started after 2012 when it was clear as day that the run was over. Instead we patched together a veteran roster in 2013 on the slim chance we could play a Super Bowl at MetLife (complete with Jerry Reese's Super Bowl Countdown Clock!!). Then we half-assed a coaching staff overhaul that will now require a second overhaul, and we're in limbo with a quarterback who can't be accurately evaluated because he plays behind a shit OLine with almost no weapons at the skill positions. Way to fix that "broken" offense, guys.
I'm pretty sure Paul from LA's reference isn't what you think.
Amazingly enough, so does the current offense.
No blocky, no worky. AND, though the DL is clearly the better of the two, our lines on both side of the ball are fairly putrid.
I completely agree.
LMAO!
Nobody else is to blame here except the front office and that means Reese. Football is still won in the trenches and we have done a terrible job of rebuilding our offensive line.
let's put the focus where it should be...right at JR's door.
If he finishes strong, he'll be back.
Britt, if they finish 6-10 or below, they are either forcing Coughlin to retire or firing him. The front office would likely go as well, it would be a total house cleaning. At that point it would be up to the new HC and new GM if they want to keep McAdoo. Hell he would have to want to stay as well.

$100,000 a year isn't as much as you think.
LMAO!
Was that really over a parking spot?

Mickey Mantle doesn't pay my rent
I don't want this to sound like I'm rooting for failure, but I'm glad most fans are starting to realize KG wasn't the issue. We have major talent problems.
It starts with Reese and his staff. The last 3 years they have made colossial errors when putting this roster together.
If you look back at the recent OL draft picks and the FA guys that they've brought in they have for the most part are below average players.
There philosophy is off too. Too many reaches on measuraables instead of taking the solid football players. They need to stick production on the field instead of taking these reaches. They are striking out at an alraming rate compared to hitting a HR. It's almost like Reese is out-smarting himself with this idealogy.
I really really respect Coughlin and he is for sure a HOF coach. However, I think the coaching staff below him isn't very good.
McAdoo gets a pass. We just don't know that much about him and it's way too early to judge him.
Fewell, not a fan! Not one bit.
Problem solved
I think the hiring of McAdoo was a hail mary by Reese.

One thing about this, the idea of a coach bringing in a whole new staff is not necessarily a foregone conclusion. We've seen in recent years that when teams fire the head coach, a coordinator is left in place. The Giants have not had a defensive minded head coach since Parcells (Handley, Reeves, Fassel, and Coughlin are all offensive coaches).
McAdoo was prevented from leaving the Giants' offices and was given the OC job, I'd have to think he was given some measure of guarentees (as much as they exist in this world). McAdoo might have been told that unless he goes Bill Sheridan on us, he will remain with the team in 2015 and continue to build his system. If things go really well for the Giants, he might set himself up as a head coach. If not, the Giants might look to go for a defensive head coach and part of the deal is the McAdoo is to be retained as OC.
Now we have McAdoolittle and his absurd scheme with guards lined up in the slot and a sieve for a line.
He deserved better.

Back to Fewell....he is way too conservative for my liking. We should be an attacking style D, especially with the personnel we've got, but we sit back in this bend don't break shit.
Anyone remember the 3rd and 25 late in the second quarter with the ball on our own 38 yardline this last game? Every LB and DB was 12 yards off the line of scrimmage. Outside of Thurman who was man up on Tate in the slot and released him so he could pick up the TE who ran out to the flat. Tate eventually makes the catch at the 25 where Rolle makes the tackle. Basically it was easy pitch and catch for 13 yards to give them a 42 yard FG attempt. Luckly Detroit missed the damn thing. But this is what I'm talking about with Fewell. Does he not value the 3 points that he was so willing to give up to the Loins? Really??? Really??? Fewell is a damn schmuck!
This D has a ton of talent on it. Secondary is as talented as I can remember. DL is solid up the middle, but we need JPP and Moore to step up the pass rush. Kiwi is a lost cause. The LBers are solid but not spectacular as a unit....as long as you get the miss tackling machine Williams off the field we should be good. Again, another all numbers guy who just can't play between the white lines.
It's inexcusable for any team to lay 35 points on us....zero! Especially with the personnel we have on the D-side of the ball.
Special teams....well they sure are Special. How Tom Quinn still has a job I've got no idea. Had one punt partially blocked and Weatherford was killed out there on another. Outside of the super poor coverages on kickoffs and punts since The Mighty Quinn took over I just don't get the loyalty towards him.
Eli and Coughlin are far from being the problem, unfortunately if this season is the same as last year then someone will need to shoulder the blame (whether justified or not) and Coughlin at age 68 is probably the one to do so, just like Gilbride had to last year. Meanwhile JR continues to dine out on his 2 superbowls
I'll give him the 2011 SB, but the 2007 SB is really on Ernie Accorsi.
All I'm going to say is he is directly responsible for the construction of this team. We've made the playoffs once in the last 5 years. Whether you like it or not, or have a boat load of excuses, it is what it is. And Reese needs to own that.
As a fan, all I want is for this team to be competitive. Nothing more nothing less. I don't expect us to win a SB every year or go to the playoffs every year for that matter. But what I do expect is that we're competitive and have the ability to make the playoffs. If you haven't noticed lately this team hasn't been very competitive the last few years....and this year is looking like more of the same.
Again...it is what it is!
That said, he's gone, and one game isn't enough to rate McAdoo. And even if this year goes bad (I'm not convinced that's happening yet), I think it will be because of poor drafting from 2009-2012, not because of the coach, coordinator, or quarterback.
Personnel is awful.
Who would want our linemen, TEs, Randle.
We got them.
I had my issues with some of his play calling over the years, thought he should have taken better advantage of their running game, but they moved the ball and scored, won 2 SBs with him there. And I do think he was made the scapegoat for the failures of the personnel dept.
Why force a new OC on Coughlin at this point in his career? The Giants won two Super Bowls under Gilbride's offense, I just don't see the plan.

just look at our drafts the last 5 years. It's putrid after the first round.
As for the offense, I never thought it was offense that was the problem. It was a lack of OL, which is what Gilbride contended as well. The miscommunications were overblown, as almost all of them were from 1 player (Randle...and Manningham before him). In fact, I find the lack of communication and "same page" in the secondary a far worse problem and the wrong coordinator was shown the door, if you believe that is what happened with Gilbride.
