Richburg should play center

scott in albany : 9/10/2014 1:12 pm
He is a center and a dam good one. He is showing how good he is by playing guard . He is undersize for that position,no experience and he looks good.

I had the giants taking richburg in my giants mock draft. 2nd rd. I knew the giants needed to draft a center and after watching him play in college i knew he was a future star at center.

The giants should not wait. Play him at center.
who plays LG?
GIANTSr01 : 9/10/2014 1:14 pm : link
you think Mosley/Jerry as the guards (if Mosley is even healthy) is better than Richburg-Walton (+ the less shitty of Jerry/Mosley)?
So make the line weaker
nygiants16 : 9/10/2014 1:15 pm : link
but moving Richburg to Center? how does that make the line better?
What did Richburg do
Sy'56 : 9/10/2014 1:15 pm : link
to instill confidence? He didn't play very well against DET.
Can walton play guard?
scott in albany : 9/10/2014 1:17 pm : link
I don't know. I am just saying richburg is the future at center. It is a waste of time and talent to play him at guard
He played one game
JerseyCityJoe : 9/10/2014 1:19 pm : link
He seemed to play OK. How about we let him play a few more games before we put him on the Pro Bowl and build the line around him.
^ he is a rookie
NYG007 : 9/10/2014 1:20 pm : link
who played against a SICK defensive line.. I think he held his own, we were TERRIBLE at the tackle spots though
We don't have the personnel
MaineGiantFan : 9/10/2014 1:21 pm : link
To do that. It's just not feasible
I'm

still reluctant to draw conclusions after one game, especially against Detroit, which has one of the best fronts in the league, but that was a bad performance by the OL.
The giants drafted a center

PFF, if you should believe them,

Rated Richburg as the worst Giants o lineman Monday night. How does that instill confidence. In fact, he's not as strong as Walton and would get pushed right back into Eli. Eli already has no pocket to step up in.

They drafted him because they saw versatility and a guy who wasn't limited to just one OL spot. It's stupid logic to say "they drafted a center, play him there"

He has more value if he can play well at guard.
What position did pugh play in college?

Did he play right tackle?
Richburg is a

Pugh

Wonderful. And the Giants drafted him because they also thought he could play elsewhere. Right now, it doesn't make any sense putting him at center.
Pugh was a left tackle, richburg was a center

lets draft them and play them some where else. Looks like its working perfect.
The boat was missed at the draft

Taylor Lewann was available and we opted for a guy whoo hasn't even touched a practice or playing field yet....Odom. The MAIN problem with this team last year...with the running game....with the passing game...with all of the interceptions....ALL of it goes back to the O line. The addressed it by drafting ONE early rounder in Richburg and then added a bunch of castoffs and clowns to say....'we addressed the o line problem'. Well no...they didn't, and that was plainly seen on Monday night football and will be even more plainly seen as the season progresses. Reese should be FIRED. I'm not going to say that Richburg is a dud....he will probably end up being very good......as will Pugh....but there is no depth....these kids were put in on day one, and it is a rare thing when a lineman can come out of college and be a stud right off the bat. Taylor Lewann...we missed. We got odom .....

And play who at RT?

All of these suggestions you have will do nothing but make the line worse overall. If you move a player to another spot, you have to actually fill the spot you moved them from.

If you put Richburg at C, we've got a gaping hole at one of the guard spots unless you really believe Moseley and Jerry will hold their own there or want to try to jam Walton into on one of those spots. And if you put Pugh on the left side, you have to move Beatty to the right.. which also probably wouldn't work.
Arc...
BillKo : 9/10/2014 2:07 pm : link
they are all trying to play fantasy football with the OL.

You can't do that....this line needs to at least play together and see if there is improvement. They've played one 60 minute game. Let's see a few more.

If Richburg is going to play center, it will happen. But it probably won't be this year.
And after doing this the line
giantgiantfan : 9/10/2014 2:09 pm : link
would still suck. Let him be the future at center next year.
Ira
scott in albany : 9/10/2014 2:11 pm : link
thats my point. Richburg should play center now. Why move him later. Thats his future. Is pugh a better left tackle than right tackle?

The season is still early. but i have to tell you if the o-line does not improve and the giants have a bad season' i will want new management, coaches big time. That is something i have never said since TC has been coach.
Think about this
scott in albany : 9/10/2014 2:22 pm : link
If the giants needed a right tackle, why use a #1 pick on someone who played left tackle? If the giants needed a guard, why draft someone early in the second who played center?

Richburg held up decently well v Detroit
PSIMMS 22-25-268 : 9/10/2014 2:22 pm : link
He did not give up a single pass pressure and while he was not very good in the run game, he was going up against a beast of a DT in Fairley. He is probably a better Center than Walton, but we can't make a move if it means Mosley and Jerry and the starting LG and RG. That would be brutal.

They drafted Richburg in the 2nd round because he could play both Center and Guard...they drafted him for that reason...they drafted him so they could play him next to Walton if needed...they didnt draft specifically to play Center...

They drafted Pugh because he could play both LT and RT and possibly some Guard if need be..In fact many thought he would translate better to guard...

you know how many players play LT in college and move to guard or RT...you know how many players do not play the position they played in college in the pros on the offensive line...

It is not as Black and White as you are making it out to be...these guys were drafted specifically for their felxibility on the offensive Line...Look David Dhiel..he played ever position on the offensive Line except Center...

Gee, I don't know.. maybe because the Giants felt that Pugh would be more effective at RT than any of the RT's who were on the board when they took him?

And maybe when they took Richburg, they liked that there was versatility they could play him at guard and not necessarily need him to play C right away and pigeonhole him there?

The Giants like offensive linemen who can play more than just one spot. It's good to have players like that we just don't have enough of them.

Just because RG and LT are probably our biggest OL problem spots right now doesn't mean you just shift 2 guys you like into those spots and fix the problem. All you do is create new holes.
I'm not so sure
mrvax : 9/10/2014 2:33 pm : link
moving the Oline around is what you want to do right now. They need time together to find a groove.

Maybe next year he moves to center.
Be thankful he can play guard.

Again, though. These aren't 1 part equations. If you put Richburg at C, you may stabilize C, but what happens to the guard spot you're vacating?

Do you think John Jerry at a guard spot (presumably LG, assuming Mosley returns and plays RG) will be more of a net positive than Walton at C? I would guess not.
The fact is they drafted and signed

average players. Look back at the Det game and you'll see our linemen

Dominated on BOTH sides of the ball.

That is what AVERAGE does.

around any way you like. The fact is, we don't have an above average player on the line and it's evident. I'd venture to say we probably only have one AVERAGE player on this line.

We are fucked unless we trade or until the draft and FA. Gonna be a long year unless the light somehow turns on for this line. Fingers crossed.
Any move that makes this team MORE reliant on John Jerry

Pugh was quite good last year. Especially for a rookie playing on the opposite side of where he had in school. But.. I realize this is BBI and one poor performance basically eradicates all of that.
Center is his best position and it's not like they have Mangold there
Victor in CT : 9/10/2014 3:46 pm : link
now. They have a weak player who hasn't played in 2 years. Put him there now and hopefully 2/5 of the line is set for the next 10 years.

Now if they could just get a LT and LG (assuming Schwartz comes back healthy and plays RG)
Moving richburg to center doesn't fix anything
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/10/2014 4:08 pm : link
Great, you can pat yourself on the back and say you have 2/5ths of the line settled, but the guy to his left (Mosley) and right (Jerry) will still be shaky at best.

So it's better that the 2 guys to his right (Walton and Jerry) are shaky at best now? And they guy to his left ain't so hot either. Put him where he belongs now, let him get the experience at his natural position.
An OG has more value, in general
JonC : 9/10/2014 4:17 pm : link
They're entrusting him to be one, rather than move him and weaken the position.

If they move him to C, your LG is Snyder. Not ideal, unless Synder experiences a revival.

I'm not convinced that Walton is shaky. Getting beat by Suh and a different Nick Fairley isn't good enough proof. I'd rather have Walton and Richburg out there than Beatty and Mosely on the same side of the line.

Richburg is roughly the same size as
PeterS : 9/10/2014 7:22 pm : link
Andy Levitre. Actually he's an inch taller.
Playing Richburg @ Center is a crazy idea!!
#10* : 9/10/2014 7:44 pm : link
He was drafted as a Center.
Pugh was a rookie last year,
Doomster : 9/10/2014 9:18 pm : link
and we tended to look the other way when he made mistakes....he looked better than he was because of the 4 guys playing to the left of him, looked so bad....

It's not been one game for Pugh, he has not played well in the preseason games too.....

Why did the Giants sign a free agent RG, and make him play LG.....he has not played well at LG.....when his toe is OK, will he go back to LG, where a rookie has supposedly outplayed him, or will they put him at RG?

Every time they juggle this lineup, they lose continuity and confidence this line has.....communication is essential with the guy to the left and right of you.....If the Giants keep shuffling linemen, they are just going to be prone to mistakes....
Richburg to center
PEEJ : 9/10/2014 11:06 pm : link
Won't happen til bye week when Schwartz comes off IR to take LG
Walton is our best bet this year
SGMen : 9/11/2014 12:15 am : link
Continuity is key. Let Richburg learn guard.

Walton is a veteran on a line that needs veterans. This OL will get better each week if it stays healthy. Experience is the key and they'll get it together as they work together. Plus Beatty should round into shape soon enough as well.

Beatty-Richburg-Walton-Jerry-Pugh for 2014! Schwartz may NOT start again this year.
Most of the o-line desirable traits have evolved over a long period
Bob in Newburgh : 9/11/2014 1:47 am : link
Versatility, particularly of the stinky Coughlin type is way over-rated.

Richberg will always be a too small, easily over-powered OG. OC is the only position where he can excell.

Pugh will never be more than adequate at OT. He is too small and short-armed. Could be a Pro Bowl LG, but we would rather build a team with a mediocre RT.
I guess Bob didn't watch much of Pugh last year.
arcarsenal : 9/11/2014 8:35 am : link
And the Giants are just wasting their time with Richburg at guard. No way he can ever play there. Someone tell the coaches!
Chris Snee was drafted at 6'3, 305.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/11/2014 8:43 am : link
Weston Richburg is 6'3, 298

Too small forever guaranteed!
