History

The roots of what are now the Arizona Cardinals can be traced back to 1899. Initially a club football team whose records are incomplete until they surfaced as the Racine Cardinals in 1916. During the 1920 season they played games both in Racine and Chicago. From 1921 until 1960 they were the Chicago Cardinals. On November 7, 1926 in the Giants second year in the NFL the two teams met for the first time.

There may have been no better athlete during the mid 1920's then Hinky Haines. Haines first demonstrated his ability as a halfback in 1916-1917 at Lebanon Valley College. In 1918 he entered the military and served as a second lieutenant. In 1919 he returned to college, this time at Penn State. Despite being one of many gifted backs at Penn State he would make his mark with two 90 yard touchdown runs vs Penn in 1920.

Baseball being the true natural pastime also held Haines attention. He was twice a All-American in baseball. He also played basketball and was a member of the track team, although his coach did not let him enter any events despite being the teams' best sprinter.

Haines signed with the New York Yankees and was in the World Series in 1923 as a reserve outfielder. He struggled offensively and was back in the minors in 1924. Haines also played football with club teams as well in the coal country of Pennsylvania. In 1925 he played in the NFL for the first time with the Giants. Haines scored twice in the Giants first ever victory on November 1, 1925. From that point onward Haines became the Giants' marquee name. In 1926 he emerged as a beak-away threat. In the game against the Cardinals he scored on a rushing touchdown from 80 yards out and on a receiving touchdown from 40 yards.

Haines would go onto greater glory during the 1928 season...
